I don't get the katana argument at all.

I mean I feel like the fact that the first flick had a guy carry around a friggin minigun (among other things) firmly establishes the Predator universe as at least somewhat "comic booky" (for a lack of a better word)... but if a master swordsman uses a katana to kill a predator... that's just too much apparently.

I don't get it.

Good point. A minigun fires 100 bullets per second. When talking about his role in the movie in an interview for WWE Magazine (then called WWF Magazine), Jesse Ventura even mentioned that it would be impossible to carry a minigun through the bush like that. He said that the number of bullets fired from the gun during the times it was used would have required a truck to transport them. Yet we're supposed to believe that Blain and Nikolai could carry that much ammo on their backs? And this wasn't coming from some guy who's "just a wrestler" and his opinion doesn't matter. He's a former Navy SEAL, a Vietnam vet, who did black ops missions during the war that he is still forbidden from discussing. And if I remember correctly, he also acted as a consultant on the movie to try and keep the military elements as realistic as possible (hand gestures, how they hold their guns, etc).

Still, in order to get maximum cutting power with a katana a specific movement is needed, one which would be hard to get exactly if the heat of battle.
Difficult, but not impossible. And besides, as Celtic Pred says, it is only a movie.
Also, shows like that only measure that which can be measured and not the intangible variables that make up most of the factors that determine a battle's outcome.

That's why they run their data through a fight simulator computer program a thousand times. Each time the computer makes slight alterations to the battle conditions (who attacks first, what weapons are chosen and when, weather conditions, etc). The only episodes I've seen beginning to end thus far are Samurai vs Viking and Knight vs Pirate (the samurai and pirate won their respective matches).

It'll only be Predators all over again. With a different bunch of actors.

I know. I just think it would be kinda cool if they would add sentient beings from across the galaxy. I mean Lawrence Fishburne even said in the movie that they don't just bring humans. Who says the alien creatures that they bring in have to be mindless animals? Why not other sentient humanoids?

They probably won't. It'll be a bunch of humans, a bunch of alien beasties, another party of 3 Predators, and another pack of pred-dogs. They might change it up a bit by having a full party of regular preds and a full party of super preds this time. But yeah, that'll be about the shape of the plot right there.

In the previous movies they took fire from these weapons head on, I'd even say the shotgun used by Danny Glover in Pred 2 was more powerful than Royce's one, and the Predator in Pred 2 took about 8 hits from that and got back up seconds later and seemed completely fine, but seriously pissed off. Not to mention the Pred dogs were shown taking mini-gun fire full on to the face!

Again, this is was the first gun seen to hit a Predator in the torso and pierce it, and at the time it was a futuristic shot-gun, a katana aint going to be as powerful as that I dont care what examples you sight.
I mentioned earlier that shooting a predator would be akin to shooting a grizzly. And you don't hunt grizzly with a 12 guage shotgun, not if you're planning on actually surviving the hunt. You hunt them with a 30-06. Anything less and you'll just piss it off. I've never heard of anyone trying to take down a grizzly with a katana, but I would imagine what happened in the movie wouldn't be too far from the truth.
Exactly, it was also very dubious how the Yakuza was able to take so many hits from a Pred blade, but not as dubious as the Pred dying from a few katana cuts.

I don't think he took many hits from the pred blade. If I remember correctly he was only cut once or twice. The other times he either dodged or parried, or he won the pass. And if the pred missed any vital organs and major arteries, then it is conceivable for him to continue fighting. This is a guy who cuts off his own fingers to placate his bosses, remember.

I think we're all forgetting the fact that it's a ****ing movie...and laws of reality dont apply. If X Weapon has to kill a Predator....it WILL kill the Predator. :hehe:

If they want a Predator to die from a katana...IT WILL DIE FROM A KATANA. :hehe: Just get over it....you shouldnt've cared about the Predators anyway.

Good point CP. And I'm tired of debating this anyway. Let's get back to discussing the planned sequel and the oddly overlooked possibility of future prequels.

It's funny how some can actually bring actual science into a discussion about a science-FICTION movie.

It's like reading an argument how one needs a nuclear reactor to power up a lightsaber.

My take on the jungle fire fight scene from Predator is that Mac hits the Predator with his M60 and that the Predator gets to safety while Mac is picking up Blain's mini gun. And by the time the rest of the guys get there the Predator is long gone.

I'll be honest, I didn't mind the katana stuff, I was just complaining because I prefer the European swords to the Asian ones.

well thats bias :o

i prefer eastern swords, just prettier to look at imo

about the idea of Aliens being part of the next group, i really like that idea, kinda like if that thing didnt try to eat Topher, and decided to try and get off the planet with the humans help

Well if it makes you feel any better, next to the samurai vikings had the best quality swords in history.

Exactly. Except I think that thing that tried to eat Topher wasn't sentient, I think it was an aliean primate. But that's the gist of it anyway. They probably won't do that, but it would be cool if they did. It would be kinda like a cross between Predator and Enemy Mine.

It wasnt a 12-gauge that was used in Pred 2 though, it was supposed to be a futuristic shot-gun at the time so was probably more than 12-gauge and it was the gun we've seen that could pierce a Predators torso until this movie.

Wait, so you think someone could take down a grizzly bear with a Katana? Come on now, that is just ridiculous, even an expert probably wouldnt even get near the bear to cut it.

I realise that, but Pred metal is much stronger than our metal, so it should cut deeper.

there are fun, even "reasonable" fanboy debates.....and then there's this.

Havent seen it

I guessed as soon as it appeared that it was an animal more then an evolved species like humans or Preds, though to see it interact with them would have been cool, aside from trying to eat them lol

Yep.

Vikings: Because it's not cool to just molest children, you need to rape their mothers, kill their fathers, eat their pets and burn down their entire village.

i re-watched AvP2, its been on FX a lot, and I agree that the guy in the pred suit was really getting the hang of it, could of used him in Predators.

...damn thats a good time sounds like something to attract the attention of a certain alien species ;)

That's what I said a long time ago. Beowulf vs Predator! And that's how the legend of Beowulf and Grendel got started.

yea i remember that, i compiled a list of myths Preds could be based on, and we talked about it in Egypt and stuff
