If that's a space jockey, it's not at all how I imagined they would look, but I like it!

Something tells me this movie is gonna make The Dark Knight look like Catwoman. Ridley Scott sure ain't lost his touch.

Is everybody ignoring the fact that the Space Jockey is apparently a giant humanoid to the right of this shot???!!!

Which is kind of weird considering the skull of the one in the original Alien looked way more alien than humanoid.

I think Ridley said what we saw in Alien was a suit of some kind.

Oh ok. I was kind of hoping for a more alien looking species, but I'm sure this movie will still rock my socks off.

I strongly, strongly doubt that's a space jockey.

I'm willing to bet that's a human crewman. Just theorizing here, but from what I can make of the trailer and the behind-the-scenes and some of the unconfirmed script leaks, the crew starts going schizo and going to war against each other, and the mutants/whatevers lose their hair or shave it.

I am 99.99% sure that the guy in that shot is just a human. But he's mutating, evolving, or something. Hell, maybe the crew members *evolve* into space jockeys somehow.

That's a person, if we're talking about the same person.

The over-sized space suit helmets look a bit silly.

It's always been a prequel. It IS a prequel.

they're not calling it that because Alien is a tainted franchise.

I'm surprised it is, I didn't really see a lot of into on the movie that confirmed it to a prequel. Then again I wasn't keeping up with the movie at every step. Either way, prequel or not, the movie is looking pretty damn good from the trailer previews. So I'm in.:hrt:

Thanks for the high-res.

Is that the freak'n Space Jockey head they have in the lab?!

I'm pretty stoked for this already. Between this and TDKR, with Avengers and Spider-man as the icing on top, next year is going to be the best year at the cinema in since....ever.

I think part of the hype is Scott has a proven knack for this genre and the cast is killer. Plus, people have been waiting to have the Jockey explored for over 30 years. As well as the franchise needs an entry worthy of the original films.
Now I'm not crazy enough to think this will be an immortal classic like Alien. Aside from Star Wars and the original King Kong I can't think of a more inspired film than Alien. Between Scott re-defining the future, to Gigers designs, the classic Goldsmith score, a great cast, the whole insanely creative concept of the creature,..on and on.....Alien is one of those times when all of the stars perfectly aligned to create a classic. That is a too high a standard for any film to follow and near impossible to come by. But....Prometheus does have the proper ingredients. Plus...strong, well executed sci-fi has been gone since the first Matrix (I may give a nod to Rise of Planet of the Apes).
Based on that teaser and everything above, this feels like it's bringing back that great feeling that you have seeing a terrific piece of sci-fi. Consider me pumped.

Damn, great points on Alien, and you had me until the bolded part.

Since The Matrix, we've had District 9, Serenity, Sunshine and Moon, among others, all of which I'd most definitely put in the category of "well-executed sci-fi."

EDIT: I removed Inception from my list, as I think that's more a crime movie that incorporates sci-fi elements, but if you count that as sci-fi I'd put that on the list too.

Something tells me that they're both awesome films, and so drastically different from one another in subject matter that it wouldn't make sense to compare them. I wish people would stop trying to fabricate some sort of competition between these two great directors and their movies.

I think a "masterpiece" of a film shouldn't be able to be defined by any genre. It needs to be special, transcendent. You can't simply call Goodfellas a gangster flick, Raging Bull a sports film, Blade Runner simply sci-fi, or The Incredibles a Superhero movie. Perfect storm of director, cast, script and many other things that provide and unique energy and freshness. Gladiator is missing the script imo. Cliched and lacking inspiration and wit.

I disagree. A masterpiece can transcend its genre but if you ask Coppola or Scorsese what they call The Godfather or Goodfellas and you'll get "gangster pic" or "crime drama." The original Alien was clearly science-fiction. Ben-Hur is a swords and sandals epic. Lawrence of Arabia is a war film. Gone with the Wind is an antebellum period piece (much more popular in Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century).

All of these can be vastly superior to other films in their genre--as Gladiator is--but they're all within a certain genre as well.

If that's the case he's mutated into a giant. Look at his size compared to the chair then look at the picture of the same chair with the humans to the left of it, way smaller. Check it out.

Did I miss the memo where Prometheus has suddenly become the arbitrary nemesis to The Dark Knight Rises? I'm looking forward to both movies more than anything else in 2012. Perhaps the true question is whether or not Marvel should be worried that, in a summer where The Avengers and Amazing Spider-Man are being released, people are talking about The Dark Knight Rises VS Prometheus as the big conflict of summer 2012.

Come on man. The two movies just released teaser/trailers days apart. As soon as Avengers new trailer comes out it will jump into the fray. The reason its being debated here is because as it predictably always happens someone came here and mentioned they couldn't understand what the fuss about this trailer was but that the TDKR was a brain "sizzler".

Alien is a perfect example of my point. Alien isn't awe inspiring because it is straight sci-fi, it is because it sets a horror story in a science fiction setting while playing with the audience's expectations of what makes a hero.

To call Lawrence of Arabia a War film is completely off base imo. It is clearly a character piece; the exploration of a man's soul.

Goodfellas, the Godfather, Gone with the Wind and even Ben-Hur changed genres. If they were simply examples of the genre in which they found their roots, they wouldn't change them. What a gangster film was before the Godfather, is not what one was after its release. Same with Goodfellas. They provided the genres with a completely need energy, a breath of fresh air if you will.

Look at what sci-fi has become after Blade Runner. If it was simply what sci-fi was perceived before its release, it wouldn't have shaped the genre the way it has. The Empire Strikes back is a fantasy in a science fiction setting.

Not that a great film needs to change the industry. But if a film does that, then it is a good sign that it is a great film.

Maybe one of the crew is exposed to something that turns him into one of the giant head's followers.

Mutated Crew member's instinct tells him to pilot the derelict.

But does the size of the human crew members grow in size as well because that humanoid or whatever is clearly space jockey size?

That guy next to the space jockey chair is not a space jockey, its a crew member..Look at the clothes, it has the same orange patterned lines as theron's and rapace's suit

Well what if it is the Space Jockey? What if it is...

are some of you going to go ape **** and burn Ridley Scott's house down?
