Bum's acting like a little weirdo lately. I never had a problem with him, but he seems to want to keep picking fights with me, or getting me riled up.

It's like he wants to be a troll. Well, good on you I guess man.

I'm just wondering why people are so sure that he is gonna be successful, it's this blind devotion to a guy who has not done anything impressive to help the cause of film in a long time, that truly baffles me.
that's why I question the understanding of the word love, no-one here seems to have truly loved, 'Kingdom of Heaven' is the best example people can come up with as to how he's kept his mojo?! A movie that was pretty much hailed as a disapointment?!

so is there any other 'great' Ridley Scott movies that he's made in the past two and a half decades? That in any way justify this excitement? It just feels like there's gonna be a big letdown after all this hype.

Black Hawk Down, Matchstick Men and Gladiator, whether you like it or not, is a great movie. Body of Lies is under rated.

Fact is, Scott is 2 for 2 in terms of sci fi. Just so happens those 2 are seminal sci fi classics that most directors can only dream of making.

I thought the first two were a real drag to watch, never saw the Denzel Washington flick.

You're not making any sense. Who says he hasn't done anything impressive for a long time? You? Who are you?

He's had many critically acclaimed films in the last 25 years and everyone in the industry knows he is a top director.

Black Hawk Down, Matchstick Men and Gladiator, whether you like it or not, is a great movie. Body of Lies is under rated.

The genre does not matter that much, sure, he will probably bring some of the old atmosphere skills, but even then, he might use so much modern cg techniques that his style will not be that much different from every other sci-fi 'epic' doing the rounds.

edit: Gladiator....Joaquin Phoenix was a poor main villan...the action was like Batman Begins, too close up, didn't work....and the story was dragged out so much it lost all sense of excitement.

He isn't using a lot of CGI. He's said in his interviews he prefers to do things practical.

Scott is one of the best directors around, I don't see how this is deniable really.

they all say that, and then there is sh**loads of CG in the film, they don't know how much they re gonna end up using until they are in post-production.

I never said he was a crap director, but one of the best...he does have his moments, but they are few and far between imo. It's just that there is a level of excitement for this movie that is not in other threads for movies, and it's a very curious thing. Well, we'll just have to see how the movie turns out eh? My guess, nothing nearly as good as Alien or Blade Runner, it'll be a bit overly ponderous, and not anything much to distinguish it *dramatically* from lots of other monster movies. Apart from acting like it's more important than what it really is.

Aye, but, surely we should all be aware of how rare it is for an artist to re-visit past glories and equal them in quality. Usually it is a sign that the artist feels he has not hit that high mark since, and tries to recapture that lightning in a bottle.

but, that's all Alien is, a really frickin great monster movie, sure, like all great monster movies you can read subtext in there, but at the end of the day, it's a really great, well designed monster movie.

I won't argue with you that Alien is a monster movie (a groundbreaking, literate, amazing monster movie), but there's little to nothing in the Prometheus trailer to suggest the same. This looks to be classic old-school hard sf, and while it certainly indicates that bad things will happen to the hapless crew, the focus this go-round is on discovery, on science, and on "greater truths" about mankind and his place in the universe, rather than about trying to survive a rabid carnivore(s) loose on the ship.

But that's the thing, this isn't an alien movie. It's about the "space jockey", the being that created the alien species, and maybe even us.

The lead character is highly religious, she finds out that humans were possibly created by these god like alien engineers. That's some great conflict for the character. This film is set up to be much more cerebral than any other alien movie. It seems to be more along the lines of Blade Runner than anything, posing difficult questions about humanity rather than being action packed,.

Blade Runner doesn't really compare to Alien in the sense of the philosophical questions it poses, and those philosophical notions were down to Philip K Dick, not Ridley Scott.
