I have to agree that a movie about Darwin's scientific processes would be boring. A movie about the world and church reacting to them, though...that I'd go see.

I don't think I'd go out to see either version in the theater. I'd definately rent either one on DVD though.

I'd like to hear from the American distributors why they didn't pick it up. So far, it seems like it's only the movie's producer who's saying that it's too controversial for this country.

I agree with Walrus. Charles Darwin is a British figure. If someone made a film about Benjamin Franklin, nobody in Britain would give two cents to see it. I find Darwin interesting and love to learn about him in school...but I am not going to see a movie about him.

I don't know if this makes evolution too controversial a topic for a movie. Maybe in certain areas.

That's quite a discrepancy between the two polls.

im with KB on this one. if anyone meets me and gets to know me, they'll most likely enjoy my company and find out that i'm an extremely nice guy. i like living my life to its fullest and having fun. im not crazy, i dont go on a religious rant and i definitely dont judge people based on their religion.....but im Catholic. My ex girlfriend of 3 years, who i loved very much, was Wicken. Look it up, its practically opposite of what my religion is about. Don't tell me, tell the distributors Or better yet, right this injustice and pay for the film yourself. I like Darwin, I love learning about him. Would I go to a theatre to learn about him...no. Would I watch the movie at home on the Discovery or History Channel, **** yes. Most people go to the theatre to have a good time and escape from reality. They don't go to see a biopic without a huge star in it.

Btw, most of the movies you listed were done a long time ago. Things have changed. We don't get great movies like Casablanca anymore because audiences have changed. We already mentioned Braveheart and you can give that credit to Mel Gibson.

Well it doesn't make sense to blame christians for this because many films have come out that I would deem far more offensive to the christians than this. The film doesn't even sound that controversial and the evolution theory has been presented all over America for years .

First of all, I'd like to say that I totally disagree with the thread title. The article posted doesn't support your conclusion. But then again, it's only an opinion so, moving on...

Christians aren't really responsible for this money hungry distributors that are afraid of doing anything controversial are to blame. If you ask me *****ing about religious people in this situation just doesn't make sense. American distributors do not care what America thinks as long as they can make money and if they can't make money they won't distribute.

In my area movies like Sicko and Bruno and the Jackass movies weren't released in our biggest theatres because the managers of those facilities knew that releasing movies like that would create negative publicity and could cost sales and that the number of people interested in seeing the movie weren't that high to begin with in that area.

It has nothing to do with religion.

I think this movie will make some money. People are generally curious (I know I am) and I think the article fans that curiosity. Also, people seem to enjoy doing something they're told they shouldn't be doing.

I have sympathy for Bettany as he was probably in his element playing Darwin, the man is an atheist himself.

I'd watch it just to watch Bettany's performance. I think he's one of the better actors out there.

How is this controversial - it's a portrayal of someone's life - not a debate on whether they were right or not. Even if you disagree with their opinions, watching a movie about someone doesn't mean you support them.

There was no debate in Australia about the film "w" being too controversial - and the vast majority over here think he was a *****e... perhaps the film didn't get picked up because it wasn't very good and the producer is just trying to convince himself that it's ebcause it's too controversial. Either way - it's great publicity for the film now as i probably wouldn't have run to see it before this "controversy" and now i can't wait.
