Proof that America is the most mentally backward country in the word

Eh, we may be backward, but I'll wager most Americans, even if they misspell the word, know there's an "l" in world.

Thank Lord (ironically) I wasn't the only one that noticed that.

I have to agree that a movie about Darwin's scientific processes would be boring. A movie about the world and church reacting to them, though...that I'd go see.

I don't think I'd go out to see either version in the theater. I'd definately rent either one on DVD though.

only 39 percent that has to be wrong. They make is seem like everyone in the usa are religious people.

Yeah, there's just no way I'm buying that number without seeing some kind of evidence.

how the hell does this make sense? sorry but maybe if there looking for a mass distributor.. but if a movie like Kinsey can get made.. there's no reason why darwin's couldn't get picked up.

not to mention RELIGILOUS got a distributor.. lol i mean.. theres far more to this story then there telling me thinks

I'd like to hear from the American distributors why they didn't pick it up. So far, it seems like it's only the movie's producer who's saying that it's too controversial for this country.

I agree with Walrus. Charles Darwin is a British figure. If someone made a film about Benjamin Franklin, nobody in Britain would give two cents to see it. I find Darwin interesting and love to learn about him in school...but I am not going to see a movie about him.
So no one in America wants to see a movie about non Americans? That's just stupid.

Charles Darwin is an important figure world wide.

I guess no one in America cared about those movies made about people like Gandhi, Michael Collins, Oskar Schindler, T.E. Lawrence, Wladyslaw Spilman, The Elephant Man, or William Wallace.

Wait...

A recent poll says this about Americans:

Believe in evolution : 39%
No opinion: 36%
Don't believe in evolution: 25%

I don't know if this makes evolution too controversial a topic for a movie. Maybe in certain areas.

A Pew survey said that as of 2008, this was Americans' opinion on evolution:

Evolution, God had no part in process: 14%
Evolution, God guided the process: 36%
God created humans in present form: 44%
Don't know: 5%

That's quite a discrepancy between the two polls.

Don't forget Amadeus! That was a film full of Hollywood Hunks!

I don't like facepalms.... But this deserves it.

Stupid Christians. They're almost as bad as the Terrorists. "WHAT!? SOMEONE DOESN'T THINK LIKE ME!!! THEY MUST DIE!"

You're putting a generalization on all of a particular group...
not all Christians are stupid or believe the same things.

It's amazing how easily people get away with generalizing about Christians, but if they generalize about homosexuals or African Americans, then they get in trouble.

Because gay people dont go out and kill you for being straight. Or how most black people dont go out and kill you for being white.

im with KB on this one. if anyone meets me and gets to know me, they'll most likely enjoy my company and find out that i'm an extremely nice guy. i like living my life to its fullest and having fun. im not crazy, i dont go on a religious rant and i definitely dont judge people based on their religion.....but im Catholic. My ex girlfriend of 3 years, who i loved very much, was Wicken. Look it up, its practically opposite of what my religion is about. I just really wish people would drop that ********. it does kinda upset me but like most things i'll get over it.

Don't tell me, tell the distributors:huh: Or better yet, right this injustice and pay for the film yourself. I like Darwin, I love learning about him. Would I go to a theatre to learn about him...no. Would I watch the movie at home on the Discovery or History Channel, **** yes. Most people go to the theatre to have a good time and escape from reality. They don't go to see a biopic without a huge star in it.

Btw, most of the movies you listed were done a long time ago. Things have changed. We don't get great movies like Casablanca anymore because audiences have changed. We already mentioned Braveheart and you can give that credit to Mel Gibson.

I didnt know Christianity taught its members to go kill blacks. I also didn't know that Christianity was for whites only:dry::dry::dry::dry::dry:

Or, is black or white a religion in your head:huh:

Wow, way to miss the point there.

edit: If anything, CP's post implies that Christians kill non-Christians. A lot.

Then what does color have anything to do with it? Not all Christians do that, in fact most don't. So there is no point in a blanket statement.

Yeah I'm confused on that one too

I'd love to see facts on what percentage of Christians are killers and what percentage of THEM killed non-Christians solely based on the fact they were non-Christians... got any proof?

Exactly... you can't just make a generalization based on a blanket statement with no facts behind it.

Well it doesn't make sense to blame christians for this because many films have come out that I would deem far more offensive to the christians than this. The film doesn't even sound that controversial and the evolution theory has been presented all over America for years .

First of all, I'd like to say that I totally disagree with the thread title. The article posted doesn't support your conclusion. But then again, it's only an opinion so, moving on...

Christians aren't really responsible for this money hungry distributors that are afraid of doing anything controversial are to blame. If you ask me *****ing about religious people in this situation just doesn't make sense. American distributors do not care what America thinks as long as they can make money and if they can't make money they won't distribute.

In my area movies like Sicko and Bruno and the Jackass movies weren't released in our biggest theatres because the managers of those facilities knew that releasing movies like that would create negative publicity and could cost sales and that the number of people interested in seeing the movie weren't that high to begin with in that area.

It has nothing to do with religion.
I would like to echo the few who said that they agree with you, Magic. Why? Because as stated by spideyboy_111 below...

regardless... far more controversial films have indeed been released in the US... there's more to this then just religious fanatics preventing it from happening
I think this movie will make some money. People are generally curious (I know I am) and I think the article fans that curiosity. Also, people seem to enjoy doing something they're told they shouldn't be doing.

I have sympathy for Bettany as he was probably in his element playing Darwin, the man is an atheist himself.
I'd watch it just to watch Bettany's performance. I think he's one of the better actors out there.

I agree that it has nothing to do with religion.

yup, again it's about making money not a religious thing.
Exactly. When it comes to business, and movie-making is big business, it's all about the money.

I wouldn't care to see a movie about him either......... BORING.

I have to agree that a movie about Darwin's scientific processes would be boring. A movie about the world and church reacting to them, though...that I'd go see.
Is the movie about Darwin's scientific process though? I skimmed throught the article.

Are you serious? Is your post meant to be sarcastic or is your generalization simply based on ignorance?

OK, so here are some reasonably successful biopics about non Americans from the past twenty years that I can think of off the top of my head:

My Left Foot (1989)
Braveheart (1995)
Michael Collins (1996)
Shine (1996)
Elizabeth (1998)
Quills (2000)
Frida (2002)
The Hours (2002)
The Pianist (2002)
Hotel Rwanda (2004)
Downfall (2004)
The Last King of Scotland (2006)
Marie Antoinette (2006)
The Queen (2006)
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)
La Vie En Rose (2007)
Valkyrie (2008)

Soooo...

I wonder if there's a pole out there about how many Americans believe that Charles Darwin existed ....

How is this controversial - it's a portrayal of someone's life - not a debate on whether they were right or not. Even if you disagree with their opinions, watching a movie about someone doesn't mean you support them.

There was no debate in Australia about the film "w" being too controversial - and the vast majority over here think he was a *****e... perhaps the film didn't get picked up because it wasn't very good and the producer is just trying to convince himself that it's ebcause it's too controversial. Either way - it's great publicity for the film now as i probably wouldn't have run to see it before this "controversy" and now i can't wait.

The wonders of IMDb.

This story pretty much backs up my feeling that the world would be a whole lot better off without religion.
