A lot of it has to do with the role and what's written in the script. Yuma was a case of wasted potential, imo. Great flick and performances, but when you have Bale and Crowe acting opposite each other....take advantage.

I disagree, I think they did write it correctly, they wrote characters who were opposites and fit the story, instead of having two big mouthed flash characters.

Depp and Bale is an even greater pairing because they both have their established fanbases and are undoubtedly ruling Hollywood right now. To get any hint that one outshines the other, be it due to the role or performance...it's just, meh.

That's gonna happen most of the time if proper writing is involved, instead of trying to create two mavericks to go opposite each other.

You misunderstand. My issue wasn't with the how the characters were written, just how the 2 actors were utilized (generally speaking). If it was my choice, I probably wouldn't have even cast Bale opposite Crowe. As I said, that particular role for him was wasted potential.

I don't see how, Not every movie can be like Heat where the 2 opposites spout smart ass crime dialogue b/c both are ego driven pricks. Yuma was a story of contrasts and what Bale did was take this honest family man and make him empathetic opposite Crowe's charistmatic ass hole villain, it took the right guy like Bale to steer the character to empathetic and away from pathetic, to get the audience to root for him rather than see him as a loser.

I don't recall ever suggesting this for every dream match-up.

I'm merely suggesting to better utilize those rare moments when great actors are acting off one another. This doesn't mean both have to be witty linguists or even on opposing sides to pull this off.

Take the recent example of 'Doubt', where Hoffman, Adams, and Streep star in an ensemble. Far from a gimmick match-up nor did their scenes come off as forced to capitalize on their acting prowess. It was absolutely natural and the scenes they have together were fantastic. I didn't feel at the end of the movie that I was jipped for being excited to watch all three in a film together. Each actor played their roles so well AND worked great acting off their peers.

I understand that, but I don't necessarily see Bale as being integral to be cast in this role. Any other capable actor could have filled it in just as well. As I've said, I'm disappointed that the Crowe/Bale dynamic wasn't as explosive as I hoped it would be.

I guess we are just going to have to disagree Crook, I felt the dynamic was fantastic in Yuma, where the scenes resonated as opposed to being mere grandstanding verbal showdowns.

I also disagree that any capable actor could do it, lots of actors would not bring the integrity into the part, there is something ferociously honest about Bale, in the same way that not just any capable actor has the right factors to be a Bond or Indy type character.

^That's really good to hear. I've been looking forward to this movie.

I think it's sad to hear that Bale is described as "dull" these days.
Hopefully he can start picking some more colourful roles soon.

He's getting cast as the somber hero who has a job to do as of late. Hopefully he won't be typecast and someone brings him something akin to American Psycho again soon.

If he stopped whispering 90 percent of his lines, he wouldn't be described as dull. He's become comfortable of late, almost complacent in his acting style, regardless of the movies he's in.

I agree, Bale needs to be a maniac again.

I agree, to date the best he's acted has been American Psycho, which I freaking love that movie, but he's been type cast as the hero lately when he can play a heck of a villain. And yeah, the smoker's voice to cover up his lisp is getting annoying. He even does it in the new Terminator trailer.

Bale has a lisp?

this and Terminator Salvation are the 2 2009 movies I'm looking forward to most

he was very good in the prestige and he didn't use a raspy voice

He didn't use a raspy voice in Rescue Dawn and Harsh Times either, another 2 movies in which he gave solid performances. 3:10 to Yuma too. And even though he didn't get to do much in it, I thought his understated role in The New World showed us a very different kind of acting than what we are normally accustomed to seeing from Bale. Anyone who thinks Bale is too "dull" should try pulling himself out of his own dullness by watching more of the man's movies.

I very much enjoy Bale, and i think his work in I'm Not There was wonderful, no matter how short it was, he gave a good performance as the camera shy, kinda quiet folk musician.

And i didnt say i found Bale dull, i just said that i find it sad how he is being described as dull.

Bale's been too quiet recently, to the point of being dissapointing in The Dark Knight. He was brilliant in The Prestige, he was sympathetic in Rescue Dawn, he was great in 3:10 to Yuma because he had Russell Crowe on top form to work with which may have motivated him, then he just phoned in The Dark Knight, what made it worse is that Aaron Eckhart, Heath Ledger and Gary Oldman where giving career best Oscar calibur performances and Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman couldn't suck even if they tried.

What he's been missing since The Prestige is a commanding presence, he's been playing the nice guy too long. He needs to play a villain, or an ********, he needs to be a mean raging bastard who doesn't need to kick your ass because his glare will put the fear of god into you. Thankfully he's showing this in the Terminator Salvation trailer.

I thing the movie wont be nominated for Best picture Oscar! I've seen the history of the best picture Oscar and the past few years all the movies who has been nominated for Best pic where with a release date for October, November, December, January . Never July. That's a bad sing.
Yes, its harder to get nominated when released in the summer. Most oscar movies comes out nov/dec. BUT there are exceptions of summer movies getting in.

Off-topic (and probably already asked) but.. did Mann shot this on digital?

I *hate* digital video. Well, the looks of it.

Bale has a lisp?

he used to have a lisp,

most prominently in Spielberg's Empire of The Sun when he was a kid.

But now he doesn't have one i don't think.

I agree though, Bale needs to be a maniac again!

The whispering needs to stop!

Yep. I'm not sure if it was completely on digital, but still.

I doubt this film will be in Grainy film like Miami Vice.

Maybe it might be more like Collateral, just a HD Cam.

It might look weird though.

Seeing an old depression era movie in crisp HD documentary style!

*whispers* The devil's hands have been busy, because Batman has no limits, and we need to find Dilinger and take him down before Pocahontas and her savages attack at dawn.
