I'm not a fan of the "digital handheld" look for this film. I thought I wouldn't mind it, and it worked in Miami Vice, it just does not work with Vintage 1920-30's environments.
The use of digital is precisely to distinguish this film from past gangster movies like The Untouchables in particular. The sleek, realistic look that the digital cinematography gives the film is to create a more interactive and visceral experience, which reflects Mann's intent for the movie.

You know what you're talking about. It looks very unique compared to other films set during those times.

More pics from last night's premiere. Apparently, the reason there are no pics of everyone together on the red carpet is because Johnny spent forever with fans giving autographs (I hear he's really good about that), and everyone else eventually just went inside because it was time for the film to start. But they were all together inside and at the after party.

CB wasn't shy with fans either, though:

Thanks for posting these.

It's cool Mann decided to film on location. It sounds like the actors loved it, too.

Anybody else think Bale looks at Depp in a strange way? :woot:

No problem!

And yeah, one of the things I love about Mann as a filmmaker is his reverence for the subject matter. The guy really does his research. The screenplay for PE was unlike any I'd ever read - he included some information when describing the characters and settings that would never in a million years make it to the screen. For example, in a couple instances when describing a set/building, he even named the architect(s) that originally designed said building. I guess it was largely for the actors and production team's benefit, to get their heads in the game and demonstrate the amount of research he'd be expecting from them. I kinda felt sorry for that production designer, though, when he learned he'd basically be refurbishing that entire jail, lol.

It makes everything seem so immediate, like we're not watching history, but something that's happening right now, only...back then, if that makes any sense. Kind of like great-looking home movies of the past, if we could go back in time with a video camera.

Thank you! I saw a screening of the movie on Wednesday and I've been trying to find a good way to describe the filming style and you've said it perfectly. Unfortunately, I didn't like it that much. :csad: I loved the opening scene, but later on in the movie there were spots where it seemed too sharp and too real. Certain scenes had shots that you could tell were digital while the next shot you couldn't...it just seemed like something was off and took me out of the movie a bit. It felt like you were there while they were filming it, instead of you being in the time and place where the story is being told.
As for the rest of the movie...in all honesty I was expecting more. I wanted to like it but something didn’t quite work. The acting was great, although nothing spectacular. Obviously Depp stood out the most, but Bale did a good job as Purvis and I wish we could’ve seen more of him. I didn’t love Marian Cotillard…her accent was odd in places and her relationship with Dillinger just happened too fast so that you don’t get a great connection with her character even though the film focused on the love story more than I thought it would. The music and costumes were done well and there were definitely some really good scenes but then there was this weird section in the middle of the movie where it was just like where is this going? how are they going to get to the end? And about the ending…the scene at the Biograph was very good, but I didn’t like the way the movie actually closed.
Overall I’d give it a 7.5/10. I’ll probably give it another try since I was hoping to read up on Dillinger before seeing it but didn’t get a chance to, so maybe that will change something.

Thanks for the review, HAha, and I'm sorry you were disappointed (though 7.5 doesn't sound that bad). In a way, I think I'm glad I read the script ahead of time, because I didn't like the closing scene when I read it and I already know how front-and-center the love story is, so there's probably less of a chance for me to be disappointed since I know what kind of movie to expect. Interesting about your take on the photography, though. I hadn't thought about that (feeling like you were there during filming) being a problem, but I see how that could happen.

That's the first negative thing I've heard about Cotillard from any advanced reviews, though, so that caught me off guard. I have a feeling appreciation of her performance might depend on how distracted the viewer is by her accent. Because so far, those who say they didn't notice the accent thought she was great, but you noticed it, and you weren't a fan. Interesting. More interesting for me because I do notice the accent, but I'm also a huge fan of her as an actress, so I'm not sure how I'm gonna feel about this one. Anyway, thanks again for the review. :)

I'm not really going to care what any of the reviews say, because I think this looks simply fantastic. Also, Johnny obviously looks great, but I think Bale is going to give a surprisingly extremely good performance as well.

Go to the official website and go to the feature where you can track all the Dillinger events, it's really neat.
