I have a feeling I'm going to hate the handheld camera and Marion's accent might be a turn-off but I'm betting the acting and action sequences more than make up for it.

Go to the official website and go to the feature where you can track all the Dillinger events, it's really neat.

Yes it is. I wonder if Dillinger's escape from Lima will be shown, or if two escapes would be considered repetitive for the movie.

the 'hbo fist look' looks really fantastic... too sad that i have to wait until august the 6th to see it in germany :(

Yes.

(see how dumb a reply like that is?)
Simply sayinh "truly disgusting cinematography" doesn't help your case much either, if we're playing this game. :p

No, but really, I just get really annoyed when people complain about the cinematography in this...

Why, are you the DP or something? :p I think it looks really bad, but maybe it won't bother me during the film. You never know. Watching filmclips out of context and judging the movie by them, is never wise.

Your not alone Carmine, the video-style cinematography does look off. I know that is Manns "style" right now, but given the timeframe, it throws me off watching it.

No, but I do love some Spinotti. :p

I think the film's cinematography will be revolutionary to the gangster genre, we really haven't had a great gangster film in years, and this one promises to be as much of a technical triumph as a return to the true form of gangster flicks. Call it the 'Bonnie and Clyde', and the 'Scarface (32)' of our day. It's aiming to create a more interactive experience (to be fair, meant to be seen on the big screen or on a blu-ray player ;)) that feels like we're living that era, rather than seeing a glorified version of it. It's use of digital and hand held cinematography means as much metaphorically to the filmmaker's intent as it is a creative decision.

Maybe my hopes our too high, but given the talent involved and some of the praise surrounding the film, you can't blame me for expecting really high. From what I've seen, I'm impressed.

I'm not really going to care what any of the reviews say, because I think this looks simply fantastic. Also, Johnny obviously looks great, but I think Bale is going to give a surprisingly extremely good performance as well.

I never put stock into any review, no matter how great or bad it is. Even if a movie gets the worst review of all time, if I've wanted to see it, I still am.

Something about her annoys me... she looks like a pug or something.

It doesn't really matter though.. Bale and Depp together could make up for anything.

I totally agree with Dylan on the cinematography, and have felt that way ever since I first found out Mann would be using his digital style with a period gangster film. There's no doubt he wanted to make something completely unlike the gangster pictures that have come before and clearly intended to shake up the audience's expectations and experience, making it feel more immediate and interactive, and less like a Hollywood film.

That said, whether or not his intentions succeeded with this technique, we'll all have to judge for ourselves when we see it. But I certainly already love what he's trying to do, at least.

She can look odd from certain angles; just check out her poster. I think she's generally looked stunning in the trailers and clips I've seen.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure everyone looks odd from certain angles or has bad pictures taken. I'm certainly not a fan of the pic they used of Johnny on his most recent Vanity Fair cover. But I think generally speaking both he and Marion are two absolutely gorgeous people.

Exactly. Even if it fails, I can respect a film and it's director more that has ambition, rather than one without any.

I shut off Miami Vice because of how horrible it looked. It looks like a kid filmed it with a camera he found out of his dad's closet.

When I saw the trailer for this...I was turned off. I HATE digital whatever it is. It takes away from the whole experience for me. It feels more like a DTV flick, then a big budget movie.

I'm undecided if I can stomach the film because of the cinematography.

Flame me to hell...but the camera work still sucks to me.

A lot of chicks in that 30's time period weren't really supermodel hot, more like spunky hot.

I loved the camera style that Mann used for Miami Vice. I was a huge fan of the Vice growing up and he made it more realistic, gritty, and violent in my opinion. As for the camera style he's using for Public Enemies? It doesn't bother me.

It almost kind of reminds me of a old documentary.
