Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere, while not yet having published an official review, really loved the film and has written 3 short opinion pieces on it (and why he thinks some others might not like it):

His initial reaction after the premiere.

Concerns about its commercial success.

Raving about the supporting performances (mainly Cotillard).

Also, The New Yorker review is up, and it's mixed. This is one of the more interesting reviews that I've seen, as he actually loved Mann's style a whole lot, and he really liked the peformances, but he found the character of Dillinger unevenly written. He enjoyed Johnny's performance, but still seems to think he was miscast, since he thinks Dillinger should've been written as more of a loser, and not cool and suave. I dunno, it was a wordy-but-interesting read.

^ wow, Wells think Cotillard might be up for another Oscar nod, interesting.

9.1 out of 10 on imdb.com

pissed it doesn't come out here in australia til july 30th :(

I'm pissed that my theater isn't having a midnight premiere for this. :csad:

Haha, that was great! My favorite clip yet. The editing of that slap makes it, because they cut it so that you can't see the beginning or see it coming by starting on a close-up of Johnny's face then cutting to when his hand is already mid-air about to connect. That makes it so fast it completely catches us off-guard. Sorry for geeking out over a cut, but I'm an editor so I just really loved that timing.

Uh, Dillinger was definitely not a loser in real life; he was about as suave and cool as it gets. This guy sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Wow, I'm a cinematographer, that's why i geek out on the cinematography and photography on the movies, and i love the looks of this one. I'm currently shooting in digital, and that make's it even better joy to watch the movie.

Man, I wanna watch that clip bad... but I think I'll stay away since the movie's just a couple days away.

Yeah, I know, and I also agree. But I do get what he means - he would've liked to see more of what made Dillinger's fall inevitable I guess, like a self-destructive side or something. Still, I don't really think that's necessary - his "live like we're not thinking about tomorrow" philosophy and chosen "career" seems destructive enough for me to have his personality seem pretty cool and collected otherwise.

Ha, yeah, I love the digital look, too. Of course, I could just be accustomed to it since most of the students films I worked on back in school were shot on digital, lol.

Time for more premiere pics. The London premiere was today, and Christian Bale was MIA (not surprising considering what happened when he was there for TDK's premiere...). Stephen Graham seems to be standing in for him though:

Here's Branka Katic (the "Lady in Red"):

And a few more of Johnny and Marion:

The hair's working a little better for him here, imo. Less Mickey Rourk-like. ;) He's killing me with these suits, too.

Whoa, I didn't even know that Tommy from Snatch is in this movie. Now I'm even more excited!

"Proper f**ked?!" :woot:

Huh. Ebert liked it. If I'm recalling correctly, he's been pretty pro-film/anti-digital in the past, so that kinda surprises me. But he is a Chicago native who totally geeks out on all the attention to detail, so maybe I shouldn't be so surprised after all.
