So whats been the consensus that people have been hearing
Basically Ive been hearing: "Meh"

Everybody praises the performances (esp. Crudup's) and the set pieces, but alot say the characters were one dimensional and uninteresting and how they dont go deep into any of the characters
Actually, I'm hearing less "Meh" and more "love or hate." In the reviews, that is. Sure, a some of the positives had reservations, but there were more than a couple flat out raves (from the NY Times, Rolling Stone, Empire, The Village Voice, etc). But yeah, I think it's clear they don't go deep into the characters' backstories (or spend any real time with any characters other than Dillinger), so if you go in looking for that kind of thing, you'll be disappointed. It certainly doesn't sound like a conventional crime story, lol. I've seen the phrase "art film" thrown at it several times, which isn't exactly what people expect from a summer blockbuster.

What are your general thoughts on it, nite-owl?

I thought it was very good along with Watchmen and Star Trek it's probabley one the best movies I've seen this year. It also gets extra points for making forget about the crapfest that Transformers was.

How was the ending...
Did they show the aftermath of Dillinger's body being paraded for the press, and did they note what happened to Pervis after he was discredited by Hoover?

I've just seen it if there's anything you want to know just ask.

When Batman faced The Riddler for the first time, was it as tense as his first Joker meeting? :o

They show Dillinger being killed they have a scene when they hold the press back but thats just it. As for Purvis they do the typical black background with the white font.

It was more intense than the surface of a thousand suns.

On a side note I don't know what J. Edgar Hoover looked like at the time but in the movie he looks buff.

He was a stocky little guy, but in real life he was not anywhere near "buff".

He wore a pair of 4 inch pumps like a real queen, though!

Having just seen the film, I thought it was great. It's not perfect, but it's still a brilliant film and one of the best movies of 2009. All the cast were great, especially the 3 leads and I adored the cinematography and production design. I was very surprised by how good the score was, and I was pleased that they used the Otis Taylor song from the trailers, as it has become synonymous with Public Enemies.
My criticisms would be that Crudup, who was amazing, did not get enough screen time. However I don't really see how they could have worked him in more without it seeming a bit out of place, so it's not a big criticism.
I also think the character of Anna Sage could have done with a bit more screen time before her betrayal of Dillinger.
My final criticism
would be the death of Dillinger. I thought the build up to it was great, and Depp's performance was brilliant, but when it finally happened I felt a bit disappointed. I think it should have either been a simple, almost pathetic death scene, or a more dramatic death scene, but it ended up somewhere in the middle and did not really satisfy. It's still a very good scene, it's just a scene that I think could have been better.
Having said this the positives still out weigh the negatives, and it is a truely great film. And finally, I do not understand the criticisms that Christian Bale is receiving from some reviews. I thought he was brilliant, and I found Purvis just as interesting as Dillinger.

I loved the film up until
Billie's arrest
. Didn't hate it after that, just found it to be not as good.

It was awesome when Dillinger strolled around the squad room... you don't get much cooler than that.

I'm the exact opposite. While I did like everything up 'till then, all of my favorite scenes (with the exception of Little Bohemia) take place after that point.

It's not a huge surprise, but I freakin' loved this movie. I thought I'd like it, but I wasn't sure how much - I was expecting it to land somewhere in between Miami Vice (which I liked, despite some major flaws) and Collateral (which I almost loved) on my list of Mann films, but it ended up pretty much tied with The Insider as my 2nd favorite Mann film (after Heat of course). I'll be seeing it again this weekend for sure.

This was a good movie.... but I was expecting alot more.

They could have used a lot more action at the beginning of this movie, as it seemed very slow for a while. Johnny was great to look pretty and spit one-liners, but in the end, I was kind of unsatisfied with him.. Don't get me wrong, he was good, but really was no badass. Christian Bale, on the other hand, I was surprised with in a good way. Much more badass than I was expecting. He was kind of subtle, but very entertaining whenever we saw him. Which he actually was in the movie more than I was expecting as well.

So, this movie was good, but I think it could have been alot better. I think they especially could have made Johnny more interesting, and added more action. But still, it was a good solid movie. 8/10

So this is one of those "good, but could have been much better" movies?

This summer blows.

This movie...is what it is. It's worth watching, but it's not going to have much of a following, I don't think.

The reviews are mostly spot on. PUBLIC ENEMIES is an entertaining, engaging movie, but it's not great, and certainly not brilliant overall, though it has moments of greatness in it.

The script is pretty average, your basic historical narrative, with as many awkward and oddly placed lines as good ones, and only a few truly memorable moments that weren't already in the trailer. Even Depp can't make some of the lines and moments work right. The pacing is ok, it's all very scene to scene, with no real revelations or interesting angles on the Dillinger saga. It feels like we've seen it before, many times, but it does have a somewhat personal feel to it as well. The love story however, is thin, at best, and while the actors do their best to sell it, and look good together, there's not much chemistry between them during their interactions, and it doesn't quite work. I have no idea why critics are calling this a character study. There's very little in the way of characterization or any kind of compelling character development in this movie, which is obviously not the point of it. As such, a lack of character exploration doesn't drag the movie down too much. While it's nice to see a director use mostly subtle, quiet, reflective moments used to flesh out ideas, such as the theatre scene...there's just not enough of that to compel.

Love Dillinger's lawyer. One of the best I've seen on film.

The jailbreaks have this great "here we go again" quality to them. Like it's just something that has to be done to move forward with life, not some dramatic sequence. Love "That was a fake gun, wasn't it?"

The gunfights are good. The gunfights are very good, and shot incredibly well. The forest scene is very well done, and over too soon. The deaths are also done well, with Baby Face Nelson's standing out, but Dillinger's final partner Red definitely stole the show with his few lines and rushed but effective death sequence.

I wasn't thrilled with the slo mo bullet through the head for Dillinger's death. After the buildup, and the tone of the rest of the movie, it just didn't feel right to have slow-motion blood everywhere. Winstead matter-of-factly delivering Dillinger's last words was a nice touch.

Production design, cinematography and visuals are fantastic, and the camera work is usually good, with a few missteps.

The music was great. One of the better scores I've heard this year in a major film. Even the period songs worked, and the use of "Bye Bye Blackbird" was appreciated.

Johnny Depp is good as John Dillinger. He has a quiet charisma that never quite overpowers, but that works nonetheless. The scene where he strolls through the Detective Bureau is classic, and suggests loudly that he knows what's in store for him, and wants it. This isn't one of his best roles, but it's a good outing for him.

Christian Bale is okay as Melvin Purvis. He's not great. He holds his accent most of the time, occassionally losing it, but to be fair, he's decent with what he has to work with, which isn't much. There seemed to be a lot of close close ups on him, which made up for his relative lack of emoting most of the time. There were a lot of just static shots on his face, and he wasn't acting with his eyes, he wasn't doing anything. He's decent, though, I guess. He never stumbles during the performance, and is fairly convincing.

Crudup's J Edgar Hooover is absolutely fantastic. Easily the best performance in the film. He nails it. Just enough "overblown legend" and real person mixed together, and I wish there had been more of him.

Marion Cotillard, save for a single scene when she's beaten (when her dialogue doesn't match her physical acting), suffers from the same kind of thing that Bale does. She looks like a movie star, but doesn't exactly wow with her performance.

There are some great moments in this movie to be sure, and it would serve as a fairly interesting introduction to the story of Dillinger and Purvis to someone who doesn't know the details. This movie isn't about delving into the past, though, it's about building atmosphere and humanizing an infamous legend without diminishing him, and it does accomplish that, but I can't help but wish someone took a little deeper look at the material, if not the characters themselves.

I just saw it. Very underwhelming. Marion's and Bale's roles were so underwritten. Very disappointing..

Eh, I thought this was easily a better movie (if not "better entertainment") than Star Trek. That is, it'll stick with me a lot longer. I loved Star Trek, don't get me wrong, but as pure popcorn entertainment, nothing more. I agree with the reviews that say this came out in the wrong season - it's much more of an "art" film than a blockbuster. Impressionistic, like The Assassination of Jesse James, but without the narrator spoon-feeding us all the info (with a "poetic" spin) we need to know. Oh, and with some awesome shoot-outs thrown in, lol.

Pretty awesome movie. Keep in mind, I'm not very familiar with Michael Mann's work, I think the only films of his I've actually seen is Collateral. I am however well aware of his influence in the gangster film world. As a gangster film, Public Enemies definitely doesn't disappoint. It's not the fastest moving film this summer, in fact sometimes it even moves at a snail pace, but it's definitely one of the smarter films this summer. What makes this film so awesome is definitely the cast. Johnny Depp and Christian Bale have already been on my favorite actors list, and neither one of them let us down. The pairing of the two is like casting from God.

Johnny Depp was such a badass in this film, whether he's wooing his girl or dodging the FBI, Depp definitely delivers a charming and suave performance. The man has some balls, too. Sitting in a theater watching his mug shot on the screen or just casually strolling into the Chicago Police Headquarters, Dillinger has no remorse. What a confident mother****er. When he tells a bank manager "You can either die a hero or live a coward" you know he isn't ****ing around. Although you sit back and think what an ultimate badass he is, you also can't help but sympathize with him when his gang is taken out one by one or he is separated from Billie Frechette.

Credit also has to go to Bale as well. He played Melvin Purvis with such a cool demeanor that it's easy to like him. He's just a good guy trying to get the job done, even when the **** hits the fan he still goes in confident. He's also a man's man, which is definitely evident in the way he helps Billie Frechette. That was definitely a scene in the movie that was a crowd pleaser moment. Also, he doesn't use his Batman voice or whisper all his lines.

Marion Cotillard, Billy Crudup, Stephen Graham were all amazing in this. Definitely great performances by all. By the way, even though she had a small part, I love Leelee Sobieski. Also, I got to add that this is easily one of the best looking movies of the year. The cinamotgraphy, lighting, angles...it was all absolutely beautiful and looked so incredibly clear. You could see the sweat on Depp's head as easy as you could see the marks on the car windshield. Dante Spinotti definitely deserves recognition for his amazing work. Elliot Goldenthal's score was also pretty good, although I have to admit it was definitely choppy. One minute we have a dramatic piece of music and instead of a smooth transition into the next scene it just completely cuts off. It was a little odd. Also, the forrest shootout was ****ing awesome.

Also, I was pretty surprised how historically accurate the movie was. I'm not an expert on the life of John Dillinger or the Birth of the FBI, but everything I've read definitely seemed present here. Overall, I very much enjoyed this, and I think you will too. If you hate Transformers then you should love this. But if you did love Transformers, expect a significantly slower paced movie.

This is more or less how I feel about the film. Moments of greatness but it felt a little "empty." Still loved it though.

This is exactly how I feel about the movie. This should have come out in the fall. I actually was more entertained by Public Enemies than Star Trek. I thought Star Trek was okay, but PE was just on another level. I've been looking forward to this movie for a year and a half and it didn't disappoint. I loved it and will be seeing it again. All the performances were spot-on.
