Movie gets an 8 out of 10 for me.

There are some beautifully framed shots, and I love the digital look of the movie, but it really could have benefited from a few steadicam shots in a select few scenes, if you had a problem with Bourne Ultimatum's shaky cam then a few scenes are going to pull you out of the movie.

There wasn't a weak actor in the movie, but a few more minutes with a couple of the characters here and there could have helped. Depp definitely came through and Bale again does what he does best, the stead-fast and determined Purvis.

I really don't have many complaints after seeing the movie, but still feel a tad under-whelmed. I did like the way the ending was handled. The last few minutes had this massive building feeling of impending doom. And I liked that.


I think I'll see it again, didn't catch some of the dialogue and I had a god awful seat.




Also, don't buy the soundtrack, just hit up iTunes and buy the Goldenthal and Otis Taylor tracks, save you like 7 or 8 bucks. Don't know why I didn't think of doing that. Goldenthal's work in the film is great, and the Otis tracks are just sheer badass.
 
Did anyone happen to see this guy walking around in the Ballroom scene?

Give it 3 out of 4 stars.

Missing a lot of context about the Depression being why Dillinger was as popular as he was, and a lot of things being too unexplained, like who Alvin Karpis was and what Frank Nitti had to do with Dillinger's death, and exactly who all these people are.

Didn't care for the way it was filmed, found it distracting and actually making it feel detached instead of plunging you in.

Acting was good all around, Depp was the ultimate cool guy of course, Bale was fine for what he had to work with, Cotillard is kind of "okay" with Depp but is her best in the interrogation scene and at the end. Stephen Graham as Baby Face Nelson and Billy Crudup as J. Edgar Hoover were very entertaining, wanted more of them.

Loved the "look to your right" theater scene, Dillinger's audacious prison breaks, the lines "I have absolutely nothing I want to do in Indiana" and "what keeps you up nights Mr. Dillinger?" "Coffee", and Dillinger walking into FBI headquarters. Dillinger's lawyer was HILARIOUS in the court scene. By far the best scene with Purvis was
when he picked up Billie and carried her out of the room
, I felt that was one of the few genuinely heartfelt scenes in the movie yet without making a big melodrama out of it. Purvis seems fairly emotionless the whole movie, but in that scene you see he is a decent man.

Gunfights were cool of course.
 
Aaaah, i wanted to see it yesterday, but the god damn storm stop me! I will see it on friday! :(

Saw it tonight and loved it. I love how Michael Mann shoots his films, have since Collateral. Crime dramas shot like this make the action and moments seem more real and heighten the intensity for me. I wouldn't want to see a superhero film or comedy shot like this but for crime dramas I think it works very well. The cabin shoot out and chase were fffing fantastic, very intense and you felt what an absolute ***** show an all out gun fight in the dark must be like.

Great performance all around, Depp was fantastic as Dillinger. I don't understand how people were saying Bale was hardly in the movie, he's got a good sized supporting role and appears in at least 35-40 percent of the film. Plus he was great as the by the books G-Man, who has to bend some rules, that his character was supposed to be. I aslo liked Billy Crudup as J. Edgar Hoover and how he got down the awesome/ridiculous 1930's news reel voice down. The intertwining of Dillingers life/capers & Pervis' persuit of him were also done very well. Michael Mann definitely delivered another winner.

This is one of those things that people will view as a biopic. It'll make its money down the line and will get nommed for some stuff at awards shows.

Well, the official premiere in Bulgaria is July 10-th, but since 1-st we have a special pre-premiere week, with only two screening a day and double coast. The first screening is at 14:40 and the second at 17:20. I missed the first so me and one friend where going to go to the second. Then a great storm started, and after an hour we had to go. So I pray that the storm will quiet down in an hour, and it did. So me and this friend take the train and one stop later we where stuck. The tunnel was full with water and one train was stuck there, causing a line of four trains behind it (including mine). So we where stuck there waiting, but then the city control come to the ‘’rescue’’ and we just turned back. They stop the trains for more that 3 hours, they said on the news. So I missed the movie. Today I couldn’t go because I’m at work, so my hope is good weather tomorrow.

PS: Question about you guys that watch the movie? Did Johnny give and Oscar nomination performance?

He was especially great in the scene where he's driving away after Billie gets [BLACKOUT]arrested[/BLACKOUT].
 
This was a damn good film filled with amazing actors, most notably Stephen Graham as Baby Face Nelson. I think people will be surprised because this film does its best not to follow the conventional summer blockbuster standard. Which is crazy for a film being released on the 4th of July weekend.

I was surprised in the good way, I thought Mann did an excellent job. Favorite scene has to be Purvis carrying Billie after she was beat. Although Dillinger walking into the police station and asking the squad for the score was pretty badass defining.


One huge bit that annoyed me was how they randomly introduced Anna Sage's character right at the beginning, only to bring her back to betray John at the end. I think she should have been given more screen time, lines, or something early on. She disappears and two hours later resurfaces to be Judas.
 
My only problem with Stephen Graham was his American accent, in the scene when he's introduced you can hear his Scouse accent slip out.
 
eh...to be honest...Star Trek is the only movie this summer that's made me glad I went to the movies to see it.

I think i'll wait for DVD on this one.

Random but whenever I think of Dillinger's death I can only think of the line from High Fidelity: "John Dillinger was killed behind that theater in a hale of FBI gunfire. And do you know who tipped them off? His ****ing girlfriend. All he wanted to do was go to the movies." Not entirely true but that line always kills me.

Not even close. This just isn't Oscar caliber material. He does his best to add motivation to everything onscreen, but there's not a lot to work with beyond the basics.
 
Well, I didn't think his performance in Finding Neverland was particularly Oscar-caliber (not that it was bad, but I do think his performance in PE is more impressive), yet the Academy did, so ya never know. If anyone has a shot at a nomination in this, it's him & maybe Cotillard (for Supporting, obviously). But only if it turns out to be a pretty weak Oscar season.
 
He played his role well and had some nice subtle moments, but it wasn't a very meaty role, so he wasn't particularly memorable, imo. At least, not in comparison to Depp and Cotillard, who both got dramatic scenes where they each had a chance to shine. Stephen Graham and Billy Crudup also had flashier roles.

Just a quick question for those who have seen it.

I'm a huge Depp and Bale fan and really enjoyed some of Mann's films. My gf and I were trying not to spend so much money lately and that includes being selective on what we see in the theatre. I was wondering if someone who is level headed and not a super Michael Mann fanboy(only because I know they will praise his cinematography, which is good but their opinion might be a bit biased) can tell me if this is worth seeing in the theatre or will it be ok to wait for DVD?

I just realized Mann had also directed the film The Keep, I remember liking that movie(and being scared **** less) when I was real young and am surprised it hasn't had a proper DVD release. Not too bad of a cast either now that I look at it since I didn't know who the actors were when I was a child. Gabriel Byrne, Ian McKellen, Scott Glen(Backdraft) and Jurgen Prochnow(Das Boot, Beer Fest).
