Ok, I've been reading lots of older Spider-Man stuff lately/currently, and it is amazing all of the quotes out there showing JUST how important Spider-Man's secret identity is to him and...for multiple reasons, it seems to often be his central concern.

One old GG battle, he even debated in thought balloons whether or not he'd let GG get way with his knowledge, and had an inner struggle, wondering if he could possibly kill Gobby.

Anyway, thought it'd be fun to post quotes related to this subject...from any issue, old or new...and a little context surrounding the quote, for a trip down memory lane...so, this thread could prove very factual and a place to submit "quotes", (not for debate on our "opinions" of the unmasking...) This will be easy if you're reading Spidey, harder maybe if you're searching them out....let's see how many we can come up with!

My first one:

Amazing SM #134: Not wanting to fall unconscious after battling Tarantula on a ship, Spidey thinks...."and i'll be helpless to keep anyone from unmasking me, ...from ending Spider-Man's career forever."

The GG issue i was mentioning, by the way, is:

Amazing SM #40: With GG almost at defeat and worn down at Spidey's feet, Spidey thinks....."Yet..what do i do now? He still knows my secret and..I'm not a murderer!"

that was all pre-registration, so none of it matters, it's a different time now in the MU

I always thought Peter was mainly afraid of being arrested, rather than having his loved ones hurt. He was wanted for so long. I mean, just look at what if? v1 #24 - (after a reimagined ASM 121 & 122) gwen and norman live; gwen and pete get married; pete almost gets arrested when norman spills the beans but runs from the law instead. I know it's not continuity but I think it shows the reasoning at the time. I think as the gwen stuff settled into the SM mythos then that's when he was worried about hurting his loved ones. Now I assume pete thinks that living with the avengers, being registered with SHIELD and being who he is that, after everything dies down, he'll be safe. Of course, he won't... but pete isnt aware his life is a comic! so... it could be argued (loosely, i'll give you that) that it's in continuity to unmask him now and that using issues from years ago, or even just pre-registration act, to justify the unmasking not being the right choice - well, that just doesn't cut it.

ok didn't read the "don't submit opinions!" -- oops. I'll get a quote from what if? 24 to justify it. soz.

After being hunted by police (post being unmasked in this what if? tale), a silver age (or just post silver age) spidey says:
"...can't even find out how Aunt May is because the entire new york police department is after me! The final victim of the Spider-Man curse turns out to be Spider-Man himself!...Will I be hunted down like some sort of beast...? ...Will I become the very menace that Jameson's always claimed I am?"
It's really rather prophetic. Except this time he'll be hunted down by criminals, poor guy. Watcher should'a warned 616 SM ;)

He's doing it for fun, so maybe you could just shut your all too often pessitistic pie-hole and go bother someone else at the Hype.

A good ******** is always in demand around here, so you shouldn't be lacking the work.

:cmad:

Spectacular Spider-Man #200:

Harry GG has just been in the Parker apartment having kidnapped MJ and threatened Peter before leaving the two alone and flying away, postponing an inevitable battle.

MJ: Maybe you should just come clean with your identity, then we won't have to worry about Harry.

....

Peter: Great idea. Then I'll just have to worry about a crazed Doctor Octopus, Hobgoblin, you, Aunt May, my parents and every other maniac in this city.

And this is from Jenkins' #27 Vol. 2 of Peter Parker (I am somewhat paraphrasing)

Assistant DA: Why don't you come clean, so the city doesn't percieve you as a threat.

Spidey: Oh yeah, and have every lawyer in the city sue me for property damage while I was saving lives. No thanks.

Off the top of my head there. There ARE many others. ****, just read any GG story since #40 and Peter will give you a laundry list of reaosns why it is so bad if his identity is revealed then.

ahh....good quotes...i own that issue 200 too...need to dig that one out....havent' read that one in awhile...

(thanks for the quotes so far guys!....it'd be interesting to see how many issues we could actually get!!)

((however, as to the pessimist who jumped right on here without a QUOTE....lol....not responding to the lack of logic or your opinions here,))

This thread is for quotes we come upon during our reading of Spidey,...for fun, facts, and a trip down memory lane to boot!

where did that come from?? all I said was that while they may be in continuity, it doesnt really matter because the times have changed and so has Peter's outlook. I never said anything insulting...Just cause I'm in the pro-unmasking minority here, I'm getting attacked for no reason now?

Peter's outlook hasn't change, just the writters respect for him.

I can't remember the specific issue, (albeit that it's a reasonably early one) where Peter thinks to himself that the only reason he keeps the secret identity is because the shock of the reveal would kill Aunt May.

I'll have a look later on through the essentials and see if I can find it. (Of course, if anyone wants to beat me to it... ;) )

Incidentally, does anyone else miss the 'thought bubbles' as opposed to the disembodied, 'voice over' bubbles?

There's just something that seems more personal and involving about the thought bubbles vs. the 'Frank Miller' style voice over boxes in my opinion. Anyone agree/ disagree?

The thing is, with this subject, arguments can be made either way. There's an old saying that goes something like "When you talk to anyone, you're not talking to the same person you've known for however long, you're talking to that person at that given moment" The point being that people constantly change. While at some point Peter was probably all about his secret identity, people change.

Rambo: Yes, i DO miss the thought bubbles. I feel they add(ed) a lot to the stories...because characters do think a lot, and thought bubbles always worked fine with me. I sometimes think it is odd not to have them.

On a similar note however, reading the back issues, i sometimes think Pete says too much stuff OUT LOUD...lol...sometimes he'd go to town talking to himself out loud! It is way funny if yout hink about it. Thought bubbles are a good thing tho.

..................As per "people constantly changing", that is true, they do to some extent...but people also culminate a life's worth of experiences, ones they grow from; that shape them and make them who they are. They don't just forget them, drop them on the floor, and make a 180. Unless it is a severe mid life crisis or something bizarre psychologically. That's when THAT kinda change typically happens.

Anyway..the point here is QUOTES....Joker, with all due respect and niceness, you jumped right on, right off the bat, WITHOUT ONE, and debating (ill-logically imo)....BUT that IS your opinion, so fine, but this isn't a debate thread...i pointed that out originally, you must've missed it. Feel free to add quotes however, regardless of opinions. Have fun!

It's hard to believe this is the same Peter Parker we have in today's comics. Where did his intelligence go??

Here's something newer i was just reading....funny these moments i am finding, that stick out now more, as i reread spidey stuff...

Spectacular SM #4 by Jenkins and Ramos:
Spidey is with the FantasticFour-who are trying to save his life from the Venom suit. Spidey is in practically wearing nothing at this point EXCEPT for his MASK (altho even that is ripped with his hair sticking thru)..... "...look, you know I have reasons I can't reveal my identity to you professor Richards..." Spidey says to him...

Personally, very interesting he wouldn't even trust REED or the FF who HELP him out of jams ALL THE TIME...

yeah well thats pretty stupid. Reed would be the first guy i trusted. tbh he's so smart he coulda figured it out anyway

1. Peter being arrested as a criminal is no longer valid, seeing as he has the support of pretty much the entire super-hero community at this point. When you have guys like Reed Richards as a character witness, no jury would convict you. Plus, him coming out as pro-registration shows that he does respect the law, and SHIELD would probably get any outstanding charges against him dropped anyway. Hell, look what's going on over in Thunderbolts right now for proof on that one.

2. Being sued doesn't work anymore for the same reason, plus even if he was, he now pretty much as access to Tony Starks bankroll, so problem solved.

The only valid argument for him to keep the secret identiy under these circumstances is to protect his loved ones, who spend most of there time in the fortress that is Stark Tower. I still think this is going to bite him right in the ass though, and probably have him change sides.

Not to mention his attitude.

Oh yes because I'm sure MJ and Aunt May just are comfortably loving how they live out their life in a fortress of a skyscraper secluded from the world and no care about job or enjoying life....it makes no sense on so many levels.

Now if a villain revealed it like GG or **** even Iron Man without Spidey's permission, I could tolerate it. But Peter willingly doing it himself reeks of stupidity in my opinion.

If I'm not mistaken, it's the same issue were GG finds out that Spider-Man is Peter Parker.

You kind of had the "Why the f***k bother with this stupid thread" attitude, which is NOT the first time I've come across this with you Gabe; hence, my telling to chill out and let the guy have his fun thread.

:yay:

Amazing Spider-Man #252:

This is actually Spidey talking to Doc Conners immediately after returning from (the Secret Wars crossover event) at the beginning of the issue:

"I want to get you out of here before some shutterbug starts snapping pics of your face. I'm sure your wife and kid could do without that kind of publicity."

So, this still relates, but showing Spidey's protective side towards his friend.......

Here's another I happened to read today...(in a great Puma run, by the way....)

Amazing SM #257:

After pushing MJ out the door of his appartment, for her safety and to protect his identity...Puma attacks Spidey who is out of costume (boxers!)...and his concern is...

"Now if only I can keep my face covered, until my costume can do its thing!"

...while his (black costume) begins to leap across the room to him.

^that was more of a plot device so puma could remark on the organic nature of the black costume, alerting spider-man to how it was "wrong", wasn't it? just saying...

Yeh, Puma did in that battle pause during that battle once, sensing on his nails that Spidey's costume wasn't "just a costume".

That revelation/part of the "black costume storyline" tho doesn't have anything to do with Pete being worried about his secret identity...if that is what you're asking...?....

I'm just saying even that scene was just so Puma could see the costume flying across the room. Its not an issue that gives any particular reasons for keeping a secret ID -- it's not special for that
