R&B Haters

terry78 said:
Most r&b nowadays consists of the same lyrics. I cheated on you, you cheated on me. Girl, I want your body, boy, I want your body. I can treat you better than he/she can. Granted, a lot of songs in country and rock focus on romance, but I like songs that have some more depth, like the old school Stevie Wonder where he talked about socially relevant stuff. You want to hear some good r&b/soul, check her out.

the new Audioslave album is HEAVILY influenced by that type of music (most notably Earth, Wind & Fire minus the horns). I've never been a big Audioslave fan,

Audioslave IS NOT R&B-They used to be however the greatest band Ever! PRE-Chris Cornell. I'm sorry. Rage was my altime favorite rock group, Zach de La Rocha never made a slow song:woot: . Evil Empire will whip you up in frenzy and have you harrasing neighbors in your shorts in as little as 2 listen's.

The 'new' band is great, Tom Morello is a genius, and I've heard this album is less 'rock', so I'ts not a slam, but anytime you mention the guys from Rage the Gamma Rays I was bombarded w/ as a child turn me green:up:

I never said they WERE R&B. I said they had taken a lot of influence from old-school R&B artists with their new album. But thanks for playing.

And for the record, I'm a long-time Rage and Soundgarden fan and much preferred these musicians in those respective bands, but this new Audioslave album has me wondering for the first time if maybe they aren't onto a really good thing after all.

Haven't you people ever heard of the freaking Neo-Soul movement?

Kindred The Family Soul
Musiq Soulchild
India.Arie
Corrine Bailey Rae
Maxwell
Angie Stone
Jill Scott
Joss Stone
Floetry
Heather Headley
Bilal
Erykah Badu
Raphael Saadiq (former lead singer of Tony Toni Tone)

The only R&B I've only ever really heard is Bob Marley and whatever the hell his sons name is, but that's because I hang out with too many potheads...

Um..I'll be sure to check out some of the bands in this thread.

Don't really care for Erykah Badu. Some of Maxwell's stuff is okay, I guess, but not to the point that I'll go out of my way to listen to it. I'll try to check out some of those other artists you named, though. Thanks.

17K posts dictate some semblance of longevity...or somethin else, so I'm not going to take a bad turn, but what is your issue w/ Badu? Unless you think she's funny lookin or somethin, then it's a rhetorical question, her music is not only good...but unlike the rest of this neo-Soul movement she's made it half a dozen albums. And she's the most hip-hop out of the bunch. This list plays like hairbands of the '80's. With some rare exceptions-Musiq for his writing, Raphael's been around for a career already, most are 2 hit wonders, and that's givin my people an extra albums worth of credit. Now that doesn't make there contributions any less valid, and I don't know what the hell happend to D'Angelo besides getting way too high, but he was the flagship. Maxwell too, he should be showing up on the side of a carton of dean's chocolate milk before Christmas.

Jill Scott
Heather Headley - Heather is more of a Jesus cheerleader than Neo-Soul:meow:
Erykah Badu
Raphael Saadiq (former lead singer of ..I KNOW)

Yet and still 'Sean Combs' continues to put out albums. The end is nigh people.

Differing opinions aside, Surf, not everybody knows Saadiq was in Tony Toni Tone. That's just the only way I can get people to identify him.

"Hey, what are you listening to?"
"Raphael Saadiq."
"Who?"
"He made that 'Be Here' song with D'Angelo a while back."
"I don't remember that."
"He was the male singer in Lucy Pearl."
"Who's she?"
"*sigh* He was the lead singer in Tony Toni Tone."
"Ohhh. I know them. They sang 'Cupid' right?"
"No, that was f***ing 112. They sang 'Anniversary.'"

Ummm....I don't have an "issue" with her, I just don't dig Erykah Badu's music. It doesn't move me or suit my tastes all that much. It's a personal preference not an all-encompassing, artist-defining statement that will be applied as biblical-like law to all humans on the planet until the end of times. Thanks for building my molehill into a mountain, though.

Didn't you ever watch Arthur on PBS?

Listen to the rhythm, the rhythm of the street.
Open up your eyes. Open up your ears.
Get together and make things better by working together.

It's a simple message and it comes from the heart
Believe in yourself for that's the place to start

It takes real courage for a man in his 30s to admit to watching Arthur.
Unless of course that man is JAL.

I am proud of you Wilhlem. :star:

"It Never Rains" is right up there, but to this day, I hear "Anniversary" on the radio everytime someone gets the chance to dedicate a song late at night.

Hm. All this talk makes me want to listen to "Rifle Love." I swear, that is the funniest love song ever created.

You probably mean Ziggy... although the Melody Makers are some other of Bob's children: Sharon, Cedella and Stephen.

And then there's Julian and Damian who also have recorded albums.

There's another brother too (I always forget his name), who's a music producer.

Here I am in the closet, sitting on some shoes.

Still trapped in the closet, waiting for her man to leave.

Been waiting in the closet, this **** is taking too long.

After I leave the closet, I'm gonna go piss on a 12 year old.

REMIX

O.K. borderline phedofilia aside as far as 'our' entertainers go and longevity..you got Sammy Davis, The Isley's, The Godfather, B.B. King, Michael fell so hard that I don't even bring him up anymore. Then you got R.Kelly. Hey, I remember the DAY Video soul debuted his first song Vibe, I can't buy his albums anymore, but he's been a staple in American music for as long as anybody that still churns our records. Him and Mary J. no matter how young you are, you know them. Sad to say, we've endured 1 hit wonders for close to 20 years.

Sht..time to do the tootsie roll backward:word:

I've always hated the term "Neo-Soul". Soul music isn't new. :cwink:

Neo-Soul is one of my favorite music genres. I also love r&b, but r&b nowadays is poop. So, I just play it from back when it was awesome
