Really? I doubt the R rated cut will be anymore of a "mature" film. Added blood doesn't make a film necessarily more adult friendly.

The Dark Knight was probably the most "adult" blockbuster comic film in style and tone but barely had a drop of blood I believe.

Charles Roven said that the R rating isn't because of blood.

BvS producer Charles Roven, who also worked on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, says the “Ultimate Edition” won’t be gratuitous. “There’s not alot of blood in our movies,” he says. “The ratings board also judges there PG-13 and R ratings by what they consider to be a level of intensity and how much that intensity goes throughout the entire movie. There are some pretty intense scenes in Batman v Superman, and if they went on longer and had that same level of intensity, that might cause the ratings board to shift their rating.”

I just think it's silly to decide the "maturity" of a film based on the arbitrary ratings system.

I don't think the intensity of an action sequence that doesn't have a lot of blood or language in it deserves an R rating. I wonder what the ratings boards from other countries would give the director's cut. The MPAA gave Mad Max: Fury Road a R rating and I think some other posters on here said that Mad Max got the equivalent of a PG-13 in other countries.

tacit already said it but yeah, this was something that was already in the works before the success of DP so I highly doubt that's their agenda. It's just good timing for them.

Not just because it's hilarious, but it's kind of meta - not just a parody of sports films but a commentary on comedy itself ( and the ubiquity of the crotch-hit as the comedy catch-all).

A much cleverer film than it appears to be.

I'm really looking forward to it. For me I think some of it will just be cut away scenes, for instance the guy with the knife in his leg in the theatrical you won't see it be inserted where's in the uncut you will see it be stabbed into his leg etc. I don't think they will add too much blood, I think it will be more impact stuff

The Ultimate cut is as necessary as other ultimate cuts. Is an R rating necessary? Maybe. Is a PG-13 rating necessary? No. Ultimate Cuts are only bought by adults. Most kids don't want ultimate cuts. An R rating will get more people interested in the DVD. There is no monetary gain in editing the uncut version of the film back down to a PG-13 rating.

So the word I heard on Collider Movie Talk is that the extended director's cut ("Ultimate" cut) will run about 3 hours.

I know this is a pipe dream, but let's say that BvS does really robust box office this spring, and hits its marks... If that happens I would love to see a limited theater run of this R rated extended version released this summer. I think something like that was done for Days of Future Past wasn't it? At least I recall reading something to that effect once.

Edit: Ah well, I guess it was just one special theater screening of the Rogue Cut that played during Comic-Con.

IIRC, In X2 during the mansion invasion where Wolverine nails the special-ops guy to the fridge in a rage, that was actually trimmed down because it was deemed to be too intense by the ratings folks.

Intensity definitely influences rating boards. The Dark Knight was rated 16+ in my country because of grim and intense scenes.

To me, it is silly (and a further reflection that Snyder's tone as a filmmaker is wrong for Superman, this film and JLA) that this movie even delved into territory that would meet the criteria of R-ratings. It says to me that Snyder does not get the characters or the tone needed and we can expect yet another movie (like MOS) of over-the-top destruction porn, overly bleak settings, and characterization written by writers and a director that just does not understand who these characters are.

Is a WB/DC Superman / Batman intro film, introducing the larger canvas of the JL and it's entire world a required film 'prop' for a R rated film, do we need this ?

Watchmen did for purposes of length in which to deliver the story and for extreme action, but does a world in which that level of brutality really need to exist for Batman, beyond reason for curiousity.

I think it was unnecessary to announce it 'now' before the movie's even out in theatres. People like myself could be going in thinking there's a more substantial version of the movie sitting on the shelf and could feel short-changed, even though that's stupid and there's 'always' a chance of an alternate version of a movie seeing release down the line.

It's not quite like it'll make me not want to go see it, and the R-rated version definitely should exist for those who want it, but the timing is off and unnecessary. Having an R-rated version is definitely fine, especially if it adds something to an already decent movie. People could come to prefer it, or not etc.
