I'd say a pretty fair review.Ok, so having thought about it here are my thoughts. This falls squarely inline with the last movie for me. It suffers from the similar issues as the last movie in terms of humour and pacing, but like the last one there is real heart to the movie. I would go so far to say that underneath the fourth wall breaking, the excessive violence, profanity and humour is a series that might have the biggest heart out of any superhero franchise. Deadpool shows that personal stakes matter. It's not how big the explosions are, how evil the bad guy is, how big of a threat the world is under, it's not even about how good the good guy is, sometimes it's just about saving one person that means something to the hero.
The film feels a little more unpolished compared to the original. The slickness and energy is present but it doesn't feel quite as tidy this time around. It's hard to say if that's down to a change in director or whether it's just because I'm use to how Deadpool is now. The answer probably lies somewhere in the middle. Like the last movie not all the jokes work, but strangely enough the film didn't feel as self aware as the last one, to the extend where you could probably have cut out all the fourth wall stuff and not have it affect the movie.
The films does a lot to subvert expectations. This really does feel unique in the superhero genre in that it's not about stopping someone, it's about saving someone, and this is where the heart of the movie lies. It's hard to go into detail without giving away spoilers, especially early on which sets the course for the movie, but this film actually makes a lot of bold choices that I didn't see coming. Most of it works, some I left a little unsure about.
The cast is great again. Reynolds is as good as he was last time. Josh Brolin is great a Cable but I can't help but feel the character was undercooked a lot, it felt like there was much more emphasis placed on how cool he was than there was fleshing him out. Colossus has a far more important roll in this film than I thought trying to be something of a mentor to Deadpool and lead him on a better path. Zazzie Beetz as Domino is probably the highlight. She doesn't steal the movie per se but she has a confident, sassy, sexiness to her along with the most interesting and unique power set on film.
The action sequence are fun but not overly spectacular. It's very reminiscent of Kill Bill in parts early on, and there's a lot of creative use of music during the fight sequences, although probably not as good as the last film. Any action scene with Domino in it is fun to watch because her powers make her look like a complete bad ass. The CG effects are not exactly groundbreaking, Colossus still looks cheap and dated, although Cable looks awesome. Some real belly laughing moments happen with CG though, so it makes up for any issues on a technical level.
Overall, Deadpool 2 stands pretty comfortably next to its predecessor. If you had issues with the last movie you probably won't like this much more. But if you did this compliments the first movie nicely, and would make for a fun double feature night at home.
A decent but not spectacular 7/10.
8.5/10
In line with the first one for me. Was fun, action packed, great characters (each character has a moment to really shine), fun story. It was full of humor that was perfect and landed great. My cinema loved it. I agree that the cgi looked a bit choppy in some bits but overall it wasnt super noticeable. The editing was on point. Its what you expect from Deadpool. I want more and I hope the vibe continues on and builds on more of the characters.
Cable, Domino were perfectly cast. Zazie was really amazing and I wish there was more but again she had her own moment to shine which was fantastic. Brolin was amazing as Cable also. The banter between him and Ryan was on point. Cable, Domino and Deadpool are a percfect trio to build X-Force behind.
