Justice League Real Talk - Where does the DCEU go from here? - Part 1

I think Shazam is a poor choice for a next film. Seems more suited for the MCU than the DCEU. I hope they give MoS2 priority over Shazam.

Shazam is a fantastic choice for a DC movie, in given circumstances.

Even if movie is just decent, nobody will dare criticize it.

Starts production in February, has 4 or 5 actors already cast.

Really looking forward to Shazam actually
I think it’ll be a really fun movie.

I think it’ll kind of exist in a weird spot where it doesn’t really feel connected or serious.

I remember there were talks from studio execs of making a Shazam! film right before Man of Steel got lifted off the ground. They decided to shelve Shazam, claiming he was too similar to Superman and went with Man of Steel instead.

I don't get the fascination with the character. He looks like a discount Superman, and there's something about him that reminds me of the Ninja Turtles. Please enlighten me?

Man, I hope that there is gonna be at least one more opportunity for Cavill to play the part. He looks the part and in JL he really delivered a great performance as the character. He deserves better.

If i didn’t know anything about Shazam and you described him to me like this I’d be all about Shazam:funny:

Man, I haven't posted on the forums in ages but the recent happenings have really bummed me out. Despite it's flaws visually and editorially speaking, it was far better than I expected. Whedon's rewrites were on point and Superman was the best since he'd been since 1987. It's just too bad that they gave the first two Superfilms to Snyder. Whedon, in one short and abbreviated effort, did more for Superman than Snyder did with roughly six hours of film. Such a shame that things might be over.

A couple of points.

Trying to put on my general audience hat, they probably didn't like the last one (BvS) - too dark or different to what I wanted or expected, over the year when they saw JL they saw

1) Gal and Ben
2) Troubled production headlines every now and then
3) S*** reviews

The last one basically nailed the coffin.

So Gal and Ben are now the face of the franchise (Henry's not even in 99% of the promos), if Gal didn't turn GA off, who did?

---------> someone high profile, had a divorce with a celebrity wife, went to alcohol rehab, and announced he's quitting directing Batman, and the "will he, won't he drama"

*Back to fanboy hat.

Is that gonna boost or harm the movie?

That's why I think Affleck's really the face of the universe, not Henry, and I'd argue him leaving and let Gal, ?Jake, Margot and ?The Rock be the face for now would benefit the brand.

Please let me know if there are GA who just hate Henry Cavill, I've chatted with clients who like CBM and is a Deadpool fan, he didn't watch BvS and the first thing he asked me was "is it that bad? must be that guy...Ben Affleck".....ok we Kiwis really dislike him for Argo (there's a line of "the kiwis didn't help") and I've heard at least 2-3 real life people just...dislike him? I've never heard of any random/real person bad mouthing Henry though, and his live interviews are just so lovable...

Again some laughs for the morning :)

I had fun explaining what Shazam is to my wife, "a kid shouts "Shazam!!!!" and then becomes a superhero, played by Zac Levi (Chuck), and has The Rock in it"

She was probably All In :oldrazz:

It has Mark Strong too, which is interesting because the concept/pull of Shazam reminds me of Kick Ass - a nerd trying to be a superhero.

Out of interest, I read some comments from the GA who were unaware of the drama behind the scenes - There were comments about the critics from BvS, plot holes, CGI issues (a few of them wondered why Zack Snyder had done so badly, not knowing that he'd been replaced), too short/rushed and loads of comparisons to Marvel movies. They did, however, praise the cast and the characters, saying they'd like to see more solo movies.

Now that the Snyder-era is done, I think the GA might have more faith in WB/DC going forward.

Erm, don't get your wife's hopes up. The Rock isn't going to star in this movie.

It's just the way it is, think for a moment, who would have thought that -

1. Zack Snyder's daughter would commit suicide and Zack will walk away ?

2. Ben Affleck's movie "Live By Night" would bomb and he would be stressed by that and he would walk away from directing Batman (which he wnated to do)

3. Ben's divorce and alcohol addition issues would surface right when JL started shooting.

4. Ben's past inappropriate behavior would dominate the headlines ?

5. Whedon's ex-wife would call him a hypocrite and thus JL would attract more bad publicity.

6.Brett Ratner's company's association with BvS and JL would further make headlines and get bad press.

The movie had a tough luck.

Earlier in the year I saw some bloggers saying WB will lean on The Rock and BCU post JL, and just basing off Hughes' article (his opinion), if they make BCU I'd be happy with that, afterall Bat's like my No.1 superhero.

They could give the key to Reeves and ask him to godfather BCU like they tried to get Nolan to godfather DCEU. Talk to Ray Fisher, O'Connor, McKay and Evans re: SS2, Nightwing and DS, find a director for Batgirl, and set out their plan, cast and characterizations (variation is fine as long as it's not drastic between movies, Reeves' team ?and Johns has the final say).

Then we could still get our Batman trilogy, spinning off into Nightwing, Batgirl, DS, continue HQ/SS, and eventual GCS and BOP movies and cross them over, with Reeves and Johns in charge.

Then we have The Rock and Shazam franchise, Gal's Wonder Woman (Hughes suggested a spin off - imagine a Hyppolyta/Antiope prequel with Zeus, Ares, evil mankind, or just the Amazons), and Aquaman with an incredible cast and Wan.

I think I can live with that....

It's like they've set the template to attract GA for more, but they just didn't show up! That's why I think the holidays and cable/rental, heck, WB should just leak the movie next year

The Rock might have a cameo though, at least they need him to do it now, WB did give him a favor of letting go of the previous director of SS.

Batman and Wonder Woman alone cannot save a failing franchise imho.

The reason why the MCU thrives is because they know on how to make most of their characters into big franchises of their own.

Focusing all of their resources in creating smaller shared universes with one or two heroes and their gallery of obscure character won't cure this shared universe of its problems.

In any case, the legal arrangement (that is licensing contact) with Jerry Siegel Estate demands that WB has to show Superman on Big screen after every 5 (or maybe 4, I'm not sure) years or else WB has to pay Siegel Estate some big money to retain the permission for Superman (everything that is associated with what was there in Action Comics #1)

According to court settlement WB had with Siegel Estate, Siegels have partial rights to the character.

So, I think we will see Superman in some movie soon.

I'm not sure how big the Whedon news go with GA, but when I watched JL that Ratpac sign came up I was so uncomfortable

I don't know about that... today's culture seems to be quite divided on the issue of modelling and how it misrepresents the female body. Won't want to get into that debate. Batgirl has a better chance of getting a favorable response by the public, especially if Barbara is seen as an everyday girl-next-door who just wants to do the right thing. They can tie in her love for tech as well since she does go on to be Oracle, that she's into social media, computer gaming and other geeky stuff. Would appeal to a vast untapped market of modern day females, and even males who're into gaming chicks :P. If they can weave in the injury she has at the hands of the Joker, they'll have the potential to champion charities for disabled groups. Doesn't everyone feel good watching a movie that supports a good cause? Spam the catchphrase - "You can be a hero too!" and stuff like that. Even if the movie doesn't sell well, the critics at RT will be hardpressed not to give them a good score.

Everything you're saying is correct...I just really can't stand copycat characters. The rest of the world doesn't seem to have that issue (which infuriates me because it shows that DC doesnt have to put effort into characters when they can just slap a beloved logo on a female, kid or minority and call it a new character).

I also think that, done right, Vixen could avoid the problems that you speak of...or maybe even lean into those issues somehow by addressing issues in the film...but I'll take what you're saying.

But there's any number of female characters that I'd like to see pushed into the public eye more.

Also, (not female) but I remember being surprised that Static Shock was not part of the first ave of announcements. Maybe its a rights issue or something.

7 years?

Sup returns -> MOS...not sure how long

If I'm not mistaken, I believe it's a case where they (Warner Bros) have to start on a production superman related film within a certain time-frame.

MOS was originally scheduled to come out in December 2012, thus they started production back in Summer 2011. So even though the film got pushed to Summer 2013, the studio was still in the all clear zone by having started production on MOS back in 2011, which was like 5 years after SR.

Now unless Warner Bros does the unthinkable and manages to do something even more stupid than what they've already done, I don't think we will have to wait 5 years before we see Superman again.

Thanks, so 5 years from last release date till next production? So 2022 the latest for production, release could be another 1-2 years

I asked this question in the Superman thread but it got ignored by all the noise.

Cavill just disclosed that he has one more film in his contract with WB. However, do we know if actors for other characters associated with Superman, such as Amy Adams and Lawrence Fishburne, have any contractual obligations left with WB? It will be pretty jarring if Lois Lane is suddenly recast.

Chris McKay seems to be prepping for Nightwing casting. They might be pushing lower budget movies
