The Dark Knight Recycling Villains - How do you feel about it?

Batman is so far (other than the Hulk), the only franchise to have a reboot so quickly after the last run. That's one of the reasons that having villains who've already featured in the previous Bat-movies kinda gets to me.

Don't get me wrong - I loved Batman Begins and I'm really, REALLY loving what I've seen of TDK. But what about how the general public would see it? It's possible that a lot of people will still be thinking of Jack Nicholson when the movie comes out and wonder, "The Joker and Two-face? Didn't they already do those guys?" And considering that Batman probably has the coolest rogues gallery, it might have been possible to have looked at others.

That's what I liked about BB - I'd never seen Ra's or Scarecrow on screen. But now we're gonna definitely have Joker and Two-face again. Then there's speculation about the Riddler, Penguin and Catwoman in the third installment as possibilities.

I don't know why, but it does kinda bother me.

In fact, I've always wondered why comic-book movies don't utilize their platform to say show us a new villain and this goes for most franchises. I think it'd be kinda cool to announce a new villain who we know nothing about and it would be interesting to see how the hype for that would build up.

Opinions?

I think part of the reason of BB's low box office total is the fact that out of every superhero Batman has one of the most famous rouges galleries of villains, and none of the heavy hitters where in it.

I think to make two batman movies and not have the Joker is ridicoulous, it would be like having two x-men movies without Wolverine, 1 would be "okay" but 2 would be crazy, they are the most popular characters, and great characters

That's a damn good point. Also in response to what he had said about "getting Two-Face again", at least this time it sounds like we'll be getting the Two-Face from the comics.

i think nolan is going in the right direction with this series, the previous batman movies were alright but nolan is making all the villans the way they are supposed to be played out... i like the more darker and sinister villans that nolan created.

To me its just like a different comic to the other movies.

Giving the "artist" their own standpoint and version of characters.

Thumbs up. This is the best view point I've seen thus far. Just think of it as another graphic novel. There's Batman#1 and then there's The Man Who Laughs. Same story, different interpretation.

I really want to see the Joker in a film again and not killed right away. I don't have the mentality of, "Oh, well its been done some what recently. Maybe we should wait another twenty years." Joker is one of my favorite characters and seeing him done differently is something I am looking forward to.

As mediocre of a character the Clock King is, he was portrayed awesomely in the animated series. Same can be said of almost any weird villain in that series (Mad Hatter, etc). I'd think everyone would like to see something like that in the films.

I personally love seeing different interpretations of the same characters, which is why I don't have as big a beef with remakes as most people, and I think being a Batman fan created that. With a popular character like Batman, there will ALWAYS be new books, comics, shows, and movies showing up that examine the characters uniquely each time, and you can't go popping a hernia every time because this new interpretation is "different" or "too soon." If you like the new version, cool, if not, don't worry because in less than 10 years some new show or movie will come along anyways, and you still always have the comics to fall back on.

Meh. I'd equate him with Carmine Falcone. I did kinda mean ahem... "Supervillains".
:woot:

I would never want them to create a supervillain just for the movies.

If they create villains, it should be ones like Shreck and Grissam, normal guys who have minor roles.

I don't see a problem with reusing villains. Joker especially. It's been so long since Jack played Joker that much of the general public has forgotten about him. Many of my friends didn't know that he played the Joker and don't remember anything about B89.

Now, with two face this is different, because that movie was more recent, but I think since the take on him will be so much different in this movie people won't have a problem.

You have a point, sir.

Hell, I think the Joker's really being pushed forward, especially in terms of marketing the movie. I guess we won't have the same problem this time around.

i think BB got low box office because ppl still had the B&R bad taste in there mouths. plus, a new superhero had taken over cinema's, Spiderman. plus, that summer ROTS came out and was pretty much the king of the summer blockbusters. also, BB wasnt really an all action movie, it was basically an indie flick batman (part of the reason its not my favorite one). i am looking foward to the new version of Joker, but IMO jack nicholson already did him justice in B89, same goes for the next 2 burton bat villians (sorry, but the comics penguin sucks). so seeing those 3 redone is kinda diffucult to imagine. twoface, however, i can certainly see a reason to redo him because even though i personally never had any major problem with jones, he isnt really the twoface we all like more. he was basically just being Joker but with a coin. still, i kinda wish they would have at least added in a new villian for good measure, they could have passed on Joker and givin us a new twoface along with a villian that we havent seen before. personally, i would have loved to see the mad hatter, always wanted to see a live action version of him. so far with Joker, im thinking that im gonna be majorly dissapointed because of the whole face paint clown makeup thing, i just dont like that idea at all. but hey, im willin to give it a chance.

I don't mind as long as it's done in a fresh new way that works.

Villains I can't wait to be recycled: Mr. Freeze and Bane. My god I can just imagine a darker, more serious version of them....!!!!!!! :D

This is an interesting test case. Batman is the first movie hero to recycle a villain on film.

Obviously, children won't be seeing this in mass which cuts off a large chunk of money. People age 20ish have seen Joker 89, but will be swayed more by their opinion of BB. Teens will see anything. People 30 and older don't really care and have definitely seen Joker before, but they also might not go to the movies in large numbers either.

I think the general public knows this is a totally new franchise and vision from a different director - so they know that the Joker is gonna be different from the Batman 89 and Two-Face will be different from Batman Forever.

I understand your concern. I REALLY love seeing Bat villains who have not graced the movie screen come to life for the first time (Ras, Scarecrow, Falcone). I think it would be cool to run into the Mad Hatter, the Ventriloquist, etc, in a Nolan "Batman" movie.

buuuuuut.....everybody (the general public included) knows that Batman's coolest villains are Joker, Two-Face, Riddler, Catwoman.....

so I think they understand the need to have those same villains show up again. Plus, think of it this way: If Nolan directed three Batman movies and Joker NEVER showed up, wouldn't that just seem.....wrong?

Seriously.......The Batman on Kids WB is going into its fifth season and Two-Face is NOT an existing villain on that show. and you know what? that seems weird. Sure, we've seen Two-Face animated before, in the past (Batman the Animated Series)......but it still seems weird that "The Batman" doesn't include him.

I think if Nolan made...

Batman Begins - villains - Ras Al Ghul, Scarecrow, Falcone
The Dark Knight - villains - Mad Hatter, the Man-Bat
Batman Begins 3 - villains - Scarface, Clayface, and Black Mask

...the general audience, and comic fans, would be screaming "WHERE THE F*** IS THE JOKER? TWO-FACE? RIDDLER? CATWOMAN?"

and if Nolan just responded: "Oh, well, I didn't want to translate villains that had already been translated to the big screen" most fans would be mad.

I think it's very environmentally friendle, and I applaud the filmmakers attempts at combatting global warming.

Yeah Joker goes in the white and green garbage can.

I don't think "recycling" is the right word because I think that in the Burton-Schumacher series, the villains were different "characters" than the villains in this series.

Batman 89, Returns, Forever, And Batman And Robin
dont exist in us Batman Begin Fans mind;)

its a different series...and different feel as in the films momentum and stuff
No one will think of those movies when they see Nolan's movies. Trust me.
