ESRB description leaks a few details.

RE7-Ethan-Protag-Name.jpg

In Resident Evil 7, players will assume the role of a character named Ethan, the game’s Entertainment Association Rating Board description reveals.

As Ethan, players will explore a “derelict mansion” in search of his missing wife.

Ethan’s name was mentioned in the Resident Evil 7 Gamescom 2016 trailer. The trailer opened with a mysterious female character saying, “Ethan, if you find this, I know I can’t expect anything from you. I don’t know what happened.

There’s so much that you need to know.”
Here’s the ESRB’s full description:
This is a survival-horror game in which players assume the role of Ethan, a man searching for his missing wife in a derelict mansion. From a first-person perspective, players explore the environment and use pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws to kill mutant creatures. Combat is accompanied by realistic gunfire, screams of pain, and exaggerated blood-splatter effects. As players progress through the story, cutscenes can depict instances of gore and intense acts of violence: a character’s arm dismembered by a chainsaw; a man’s leg taken off at the knee with a shovel; a character impaled through the face with a shovel. Some areas also depict mutilated corpses with exposed organs/viscera. The words “f**k” and “*****” are heard in the dialogue.
Resident Evil 7: biohazard will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 24.

Chainsaw? Flame thrower? Explosives? :hmm:

Yep, I am sticking with my original prediction; horror themed action fps bait and switch.

Alien: Isolation has all of these things and is still very much a survival horror game.

Isolation's development team did not have Capcom's track record of mishandling the Resident Evil franchise, so forgive my skepticism. Capcom has squandered any benefit of the doubt they may otherwise receive.

I'm not terribly thrilled by that. I didn't hate AI.. But I also didn't like hiding from ****.

Then I would gauge your expectations accordingly. Everything that has been released suggests they're going for a modern survival horror game which would involve a lot a hiding.

You can't bait and switch something when you haven't even dropped enough bait to switch. Besides, you can say whatever you want about Capcom 'mishandling' the RE franchise, but they don't have any real history of doing what you're saying with any franchise, much less RE. You're just saying cynical stuff for the sake of saying it.

This Saturday we'll have more official info about RE7, and some streaming footage on Sunday as well, but here's a claimed early leak at some of the footage coming. There's not much, but you get a look at the pistol and knife. No one is sure if it's 100% legit or not, but apparently this guy has leaked snippets of things before, and two of the environments in the pictures (the staircase and the garage) were featured in the original E3 reveal of the game. And is the enemy there some type of zombie? Maybe. We'll probably find out more Saturday.

Not going to lie RE7 is the most I've been excited for an RE game in almost a decade.

yep it's different but it might do it to get back to horror they've been missing til they figure out hoe to get that back fully with third person.

Though that part is more due to them not listening to fan's and gamer new's outlets in the west and their own home area after 4 came about about it keeping horror in first place.

The change in perspective is honestly irrelevant to me. I think a lot folks are putting way too much focus on where they placed the camera. They are going for a more modern post Penumbra survival horror game. Penumbra and its successors (Amnesia, Outlast, Alien Isolation) are all first person games. I'm excited for this game as a stand alone release. I don't give a **** about Resident Evil's canon and the baggage that comes with it. I wanted them to do something radically different from the last few games and return to the genre properly. So far so good, as far as I am concerned.

Radically different and new is fine if they can pull it off . And I do welcome new and different instead of trying copy others and failing at it cause you don't really know how to do it right, and refuse to get people that know how (the dead space stomp in 6 .) Any way I'm sure this will do fine as it's own thing.

I'll be honest, I really hope the game shews more toward classic RE than those other mentioned games. I liked Alien Isolation and Outlast decently enough, but I want to have some degree of real combat, and not have the game geared more towards stealth and avoiding enemies.

Anyway, the trailer was alright. The family looks like they'll be fun. The demo was also updated, and we have a new room with pistol ammo, a dummy hand that you can combine with the figure, and a key. No one has discovered anything else at this point.

I think it will be a hybrid honestly, some sections will be soley based on stealth and other sections will feature gunplay.

The feast from the new trailer reminded me of the scene from 5 where some majini stuff a plaga down a Kijuju citizen's throat. Plus the way Jack says "welcome to the family" puts me in the mind of a hive where all the members are a family.

Plaga time boyos.
