Here's a quick video from Ted Price.

I hope THE LIZARD#1 is taking the news ok. He is a big fan.
Haha I'm not taking the news well. This, in short, is a HUGE disappointment for me! But then again, I can see where they are coming from. In my opinion, Resistance went down hill after the first one.
Now for the long response...
I know a lot of people disagree but I think Fall of Man is still the best installment out of the franchise. I feel had Insomniac stayed true to the original roots established in Fall of Man, the franchise would have been considered one of the greats amongst the industry. Tall order, I know. However, I strongly believe it to be true.
Not many gamers can see the brilliance that was Fall of Man. Many disliked it for the arcade esque mechanics. But, in todays market, it's interesting to see that returning to the more archaic game mechanics were a huge plus for some. I feel Fall of Man did everything the best. While Insomniac failed to touch on a lot of the story elements in the actual game, that was one of the benefits to being a super fan. I know A LOT about this franchise. Many Insomniacs feel I know the franchise better than most employees.
I feel that's one of the reasons why the franchise enticed me the way it has. Unfortunately though, Insomniac didn't manage to craft that brilliance into the actual game experience. The lore of Resistance is extensive and that's why I'm very saddened to hear they won't be making a fourth. There are still so many questions left unanswered and the franchise had a TON of potential.
But, as I said before, I feel this is the right move. After Fall of Man, the franchise went downhill. I felt TJ Fixman penned a terrible story for the second installment and it plummeted into a generic mess. It was also suffering identity issues. The glorified mechanics Modern Warfare established began bleeding over into this franchise. Like I said, if they stayed with what they originally had I feel this franchises outcome could have been different.
Resistance 3 was a step in the right direction. While I was highly disappointed with the final product, and I'm not talking about the bugs that plague it, it was the weakest Insomniac title I've played. Drew Murray did a phenomenal job with the controls though. That to me was one of the strongest elements of Resistance 3.
But as a whole, the game fell short. I felt the mentality the team had for Resistance 2 should have been for Resistance 3 and vice versa. Resistance 3 was nothing more than a refined experience. They didn't push the franchise to bigger heights. Instead, they played it safe. The weapons were a disappointment for me. Most were just re-skinned weapons from previous installments.
Wildfire- LAARK
Mutator- Sapper
Deadeye- Fareye
Atomizer- Arc Charger
Other disappointments from Resistance 3 were...
- No new Chimeran strains to combat
- The lore of Resistance wasn't explored further
- Characters touched on in previous installments did not make appearances. *Except for a small radio easter egg featuring Lt. Cartwright*
- Takes place in the United States.
and a multitude of other things I could ramble on about but I'll spare everyone.
Basically, I felt Resistance was nothing more than an identity crisis. The franchises continuity was for crap. With that being said, I felt Resistance 3 was starting to become the turning point. Had Insomniac stuck to their guns and put one more installment out, I bet it would have been the best in the series.
Recipe for a successful Resistance 4...
- Take R: FOM's story telling/presentation
- R: FOM art direction
- The ambitions of R2
- Resistance 3's tight controls
- R: FOM's game mechanics
- Resistance 3's graphics
- R: FOM's sound/music
and you pretty much had a solid title. I'm just disappointed this franchise will never reach the true potential it started with. I feel Insomniac decided to abandon this franchise because the going got tough and they painted themselves into a corner. They continued on when there was no more enthusiasm for the project.
That is the only reason why I'm seeing it acceptable to discontinue the franchise. They are doing Resistance fans a favor by not running it into the ground. Sure the end to the franchise was anticlimactic and terrible and didn't really go out with a bang but I'll settle for a whimper any day of the week.
I'm disappointed with how Insomniac treated the Resistance franchise but I think being an uber fan also has its disadvantages. The fact that Resistance was shrouded in mystery makes your mind wonder. You started putting pieces together and trying to answer the questions yourself. I feel the answered questions I was envisioning were probably going to be better than the official answer Insomniac would have provided. In a way, it would have probably turned out to be a LOST experience for me. So I can commend Insomniac's efforts and say I look forward to what the future has in-store from them.
