I wish speilberg had directed this, this was him in his prime around when he was doing ET too, I think he could have pulled off the Ewoks.

Another thing I love about ROTJ is the fact that the trio actually have some scenes together.Especially Han and Luke.Great lines between them.

Something I noticed in Jedi:Luke tells the Emperor "Your overconfidence is your weakness." to which the Emperor replies "Your faith in your friends is yours".But actually....wasn't the reverse true in both cases?

Luke was so overconfident,he didn't even seem to allow for the possibility that Vader would in fact turn him over to the Emperor.Needless to say, throwing away his lightsaber in front of the Emperor was also overconfident.

Palpatine's faith in Vader (whom he calls "My friend") was fairly extreme, since he thought he could torture his son to death right in front of him without Vader batting an eye.One could make the case his faith in his Empire could fall in that category .

Interesting assertion, never thought about it that way before.

I don't think Luke throwing away his lightsaber was overconfidence as much as not allowing himself any further temptation to give into violence. Since he's never encountered any Sith Lords before, and Yoda obviously never got around to that "absorb the lightning in the palm of your hand" maneuver, he didn't know the Emperor wasn't exactly what he appeared to be: a frail old man surrounded by guards.

RotJ is my favorite movie of all time. I wouldn't even say it's the best of the series, but I've always liked it the most.

I've always loved this film and consider the 2nd best of the series after "Empire." I even remember seeing it in a theater as a kid and being obsessed with it. Jabba the Hutt is a great character and everything that takes place in his palace is awesome, and the end battle with Luke,Vader and the Emperor was a wonderful and exciting ending to the series! The only part I didn't like was the middle of the film. Yes,the speeder bike chase was great, but I never really liked any of the Endor stuff. I really liked Luke in the film as well. He was such a cool Jedi [email protected]! I guess many people don't consider the movie as "deep" as Empire Strikes Back, but I don't see the hate it gets by some.

Wow, those poster/wallpapers are so cool!! Too bad that the RotJ one has slave Leia front and center, or else I'd save all three. That stupid stupid costume has always been one of my least favorite things about RotJ, besides the fact that Han wasn't leading the DS II space attack.

I agree with you about Han not leading the DSII attack, but the slave look ...

It would have been cool if the film was balsy enough to kill off Luke, kind of in Return of the King esque-manor. When Luke takes off Vaders mask and theres the whole emotional moment have Luke realize he's never going to be able to purge the darkside from himself, and dies on the Death Star with his father. It would give more purpose to revealing Leia as Lukes sister and hinting at her use of the force. Then at the end, durring the celebration have Leia look over and see the ghosts, with Luke and Anakin appearing together, allowing for a brand new era for the force beginning with Leia who is neither Light nor Dark.

It would have been an interesting and exciting twist ... somewhat unexpected ... but I think it would have hurt the film's box office. Notwithstanding, ROTJ is an exceptional film and my opinion, the best of the series thus far.

Since today is the 30th anniversary Return of the Jedi's opening day, here's a little 1983-era nostalgia:

    Trailer:

    [YT]LOy8JRogT-c[/YT]

Story on the lines for the movie in Times Square:

    [YT]zjce141miEs[/YT]

    Return of the Jedi cookies!

C-3P0 cereal (yeah, this was a thing back then):

    [YT]wMPd72oewmM[/YT]

Return of the Jedi Burger King glasses!

    [YT]cekUDgHyFYc[/YT]

    One of the toy commericals:

The Jedi Arena Atari game (yes, this was as awful as it looked)

    [YT]tLLEvVy8nEU[/YT]

A commercial for Ewok dolls. You know you want one:

As you can see in the trailer around the 0:41 mark, Luke's sabre was originally blue on Tatooine. They changed it to green because it showed up better against the blue sky.

That's some cool stuff. I have the the Return of the Jedi Storybook as well, but that's the limit of my ROTJ stuff unfortunately.

I do seem to recall having some sort of original Ewok coffee mugs or something... I wonder where those got to... I had forgotten about them until now.

Thanks. I got the record (which was a storybook recording with dialogue and sound effects from the movie, I have an ESB one too) the same day I got the garbage can, along with a ROTJ t-shirt.

The garbage can has long since been squashed, the t-shirt has long since been outgrown...but I still have the record. Even though I haven't had a record player in years. But I used it for sound effects in a high school project once. :oldrazz:

I remember those too. There also these plastic cups and bowls that had Jabba's Palace and the Ewoks. My mom got those for us a few weeks before the movie came out.

There's also a story on the toy sales the week ROTJ opened. The guy they talked to at the end probably made a small fortune off of those figures he's buying:

A picture of the line at the Loews Astor Plaza theater in Times Square, NYC.

I never saw any of the Star Wars movies at that theater, but I did see the first Spiderman movie there in 2002 (the theater closed in 2004). It only had the one screen, but it had about 1600 seats, so an opening night crowd there was pretty wild.
