Return of the Jedi special edition ramblings

StarWarsAgent said:
You have to ask yourselves...just ignore star wars for a moment..when you buy a DVD would you rather buy the special edition? Collectors editon? director's cut?..I'd rather have the special edition of any DVD. For example, I want to get the special edition of Titanic, because it has more features and extra scenes..

You guys have to understand, deleted scenes, documentaries, effects..anything to add to the movie is better than just having the original version..from a marketing point of view..

I've already lived all my life watching the regular version of the star wars OT, I think I have about 20 VHS tapes..It got a little old after a while..hence why I love the PT so much...It was fun, new and different.
When I buy a DVD, I buy it for the movie. The extras are just that. Extras.

Was I bummed that Batman Begins didn't have a commentary track? Yes. Will I buy it again just for the commentary track? No.

And pretty much, the only thing the marketing staff are concerned about is selling the same DVD again. Hence the many different versions of the same DVD (look at the James Bond series) where the only change between each version is artwork.

So true.

Lucas didn't change the story. That's just rubbish.

He added more visual content and fixed the special effects and added a few deleted scenes that fans wanted to see for years..like when Biggs and Luke meet on Yavin. Or the Han Solo-jabba scene..fans wanted to see that for years and *****ed about it for years..he did what the fans wanted..a special edition.

No one is forcing anyone to do anything..if you don't like the special edition.send the dvd's my way, I'll be glad to have them..And just get the original versions.

Greedo shot first..and that's just a fact..it was in the script and it was Lucas's original idea..He changed it because he wanted to make Han Solo the good guy..not some evil mercenary killing randomly at cantina's.

You don't like it? tuff luck kid. Get over it and move along.

Where was Greedo shooting first in the original script?

I mean, when he filmed the movie in '76 he had the technology at hand to do so, right?

Before you actually spout some ****, have something with weight. It's called Facts.

Let me tell you something, goddammit. First off, don't send me PMs telling you to hop off that thing you call a penis. Secondly, nobody cares if Lucas put a couple of singing animated creatures in an insignificant scene from Return of the Jedi. I hated that scene, and still do.

You seem very angry at Lucas Edd. Perhaps you should get some theraphy or something.

No, there's a difference between hating somebody that you talk about it everyday, which I don't, and hating certain parts about a movie, which I did. It's not going to affect my life. I just happen to hate that part, and Lucas is a moron for doing it. You are the one who needs therapy, boy. You dream about Vader smelling Luke's hair, and fresh flowers on a fictional planet. That is sad.

Excellent. And it was just a reminder to maintain it before anything erupts.

Thanks.

No problem.

Back to my rambling.

Anyone else agree that the whole singing scene was so completely useless?

Anyway, it's one thing to make special effects better... It's another thing to change around the story. And on that note, it's one thing to re-insert deleted scenes, but it's another thing to alter the story and even acting in scenes that are already there. Lucas went beyond "special edition" with the Star Wars movies, end entered the territory of "fiddled around with edition". Greedo shooting first altered a fundamental part of Han Solo's character (shoot first, ask questions later), and replacing Shaw with Christensen in Jedi (seeing old Anakin in "pure" form). And beyond that, there's nitpicking things like Boba Fett's voice and whatnot. I can understand the Ian McDirmond emperor scene in Empire, and that was actually not such a bad change since it tightened things up a little bit (even though I think they could have filmed it better).

The point is, GL went beyond making the movies look better, cleaner, more consistant, whatever. He wanted to change the actual actors because he thought they needed tweaking, and they clearly did not.

I agree. I also thought that Jabba scene in Star Wars watered down his character. I can't imagine a ruthless gangster like Jabba letting Han talk trash to him while walking on his tail. That scene wasn't even necessary in the overall scheme of things.

Well, that was a scene that was originally going to be in the movie, and when Lucas wrote the other two movies he had been hoping to someday reinsert the Jabba scene. I thought that that scene was a good addition, because we were getting more of the story. It didn't really change the story, but it shed a little more light on Han's dealings with Jabba prior to Jedi. Making Greedo shoot first and replacing Shaw with Christensen though... That's clearly meddling, not enhancing.

But the replacing Shaw with Christensen thing should be okay, Anakin used the force to change his ghost form to the form when he could finally smell his son's fresh hair.

Yes.

Han never stepped on Jabba's tail in the original scene...Jabba didn't have a tail and the original design was more like a fat Chewie that was supposed to be put in in post production. The tail stepping is ******ed, and makes Jabba look like a wuss...The Jabba from ROTJ would have had Han fried that instant for the insult. I know for a fact that the animators had come up with a way for Han to have stepped around him and not step on his tail, but George Lucas thought it was funnier to have him step on the tail.

Says it all really, doesnt it? :O

And personally, I actually preffered the 'yub yub' music at the end of ROTJ to what they replaced it with.

Han stepping on the feared crime-lord, Jabba the Hutt's tail (knowing that he owes him a ton of money and if he doesn't pay up, Jabba will have him killed) is way more egregious/******ed than even solo/greedo.

Imagine that you hadn't paid your rent in 3 months and your landlord came and said "I need the rent within the week or you're evicted."

Would anyone in their right mind step on his foot?

Now replace "landlord" with "Mafia Boss", replace "rent" with "$20,000" and replace "evicted" with "killed". (and "foot" with "ass")

I mean, that scene is proof that there has been an actual mental deterioration for George.
It's not, "ooh, it's fashionable to hate the SE's." or "ooh, nothing could compare with your childhood memories."

That is blatantly ******ed.
