Could've easily been done with Green Goblin 2 being the solo villain with Venom for the climax. Also, there would be a parallel between Peter and Harry, since both went down a dark path throughout the movie. More development time for Eddie and all without Marko. See the Sandman thread for my thoughts on Marko.

What do you think?

^^ I like it. Simple, effective and gives all the characters breathing room. One question though, what happens to Pete to teach HIM the lessons of revenge and responsibility. With Sandman gone, there is no one for Peter to focus his newfound, symbiotic anger on. Unless Harry does something really terrible.......

Harry's mindgames. Like screwing around with MJ/Peter's relationship.

It would seem simple and effective, wouldn't it? I guess I don't understand some people who are so adamant that Sandman was necessary, that this was the only Spider-man 3 that could've been made.

I guess a big reason why Sandman was still in the film was because we've already seen a goblin as the main villian. Yes, Harry Osborn is very different from Norman Osborn, but in the end they both still fly around on gliders and throw pumpkin bombs. That's why Sandman stayed in there - so we could see something new. Whether that's a good thing or bad thing is up for debate, but that's how it is.

The problem with getting rid of Sandman is that you get rid of the person Peter is supposed to forgive. Harry and Eddie already have preexisting relationships with pre-symbiote Peter, so forgiving them wouldn't really show growth on Peter's part, he would just be forgiving people he already knew.

And I don't think Harry's mindgames would be enough to drive Peter to vengeance. Getting revenge is trying to get personal justice for something wrong. Harry splitting up Peter and MJ doesn't seem like something that would set Peter into killing mode.

I think we have enough of these threads.

Besides, Raimi wanted Peter to learn the lesson, not just Harry. And for that to happen he'd have to go down a path of vengence and stop himself before letting it consume him. That is what Sandman allowed.

If any character was superfolous in all of this, it simply would be Venom. Because Harry's arc is strong enough on its own and Peter learning his lesson makes the movie relavent. Venom is just eye candy that RAimi tried his darndest to justify. And he succeeded to that end with mixed results but it on the whole weighed down and harmed his movie.

Oh well.

You know, sometimes I wake up thinking Spider-Man 3 would have made a truckload of money regardless of what villains they used.
