The Amazing Spider-Man Rhys Ifans Cast as The Lizard

I don't understand why the lab coat is a big deal whether it's there or not.

When the movie releases and people complain...that'll be some serious nitpicking.
Well, it has been part of his look for 48 years, but overall.

Connors can transform to Lizard without a lab coat. If he transforms many times during the movie, I'm sure that he doesn't wear a lab coat each time.

Maybe it's just how I pictured or imagine it in my head when I read the descriptions, but didn't people say there was a more humanoid version of the Lizard before the final, massive one appeared? Look for the Lizard to have some clothes in his early forms throughout the movie.

I think what they're going for, which makes sense, is Dr. Connors/The Lizard to lose all touch with humanity as the film progresses.

Ie:

He starts out as a doctor trying to develop something that is revolutionary, the experiment goes wrong but he still maintains a piece of himself, as the film and story continues, he tries relentlessly to fix his formula but only makes it worse until he eventually becomes this beast of a creature and loses all touch with what he used to be which would explain Peter's final plea in one of the footage reels shown:

"DR. CONNORS! THIS ISN'T YOU! STOP IT! STOP IT NOW!"

I think everyone is overreacting a bit to this Lizard without a labcoat deal.

The lizard wearing a labcoat has always been rather silly. Think about it, in what is supposed to be a credible movie, you have some man-sized dinosaur wearing a ripped and tattered outfit??? Please.

The MTV series had a great episode with the lizard and he wasn't wearing a bloody labcoat and it still worked.

It's a Lizard, that was a former man, in a superhero movie. It's no more silly than the hulk still keeping his pants.

A Lizard that probably few fans even liked.

While I do think he'll be wearing the labcoat and pants in earlier forms, I don't think it's a necessity when he has reach that ultimate form that's just this massive monster. As I said, I believe this new interpretation of the Lizard is supposed to represent its lack of humanity and any connection to it.

A lot of people (myself included) loved the MTV series, its only downfall was that it was semi-following the movie's storyline.

It was a darker take on Spider-Man that I have not seen since in any of his animated series.

This is something we can finally agree on. I felt Dr. Connors in the show was cool (and the fact that he was voiced by Rob Zombie was awesome), but it (like many other things in the show) was "bleh" overall. The only decent thing about the show IMO is the fact that he's voiced by NPH and the animation. other than that, I did not like the show.

I'm curious, I've looked around and it has a pretty positive reception from fans... why don't you guys like it...?

I still remember Spidey's quip in the episode with The Lizard xD

"Hey scaly, you know where I can get a little tail?"

I'll probably getbashed for this (as always), but the show was trying to appeal to an MTV audience. The whole show felt so modern to the point where it was annoying as hell.

I think I actually liked Spider-Man in it. Kraven had a nice design and even Electro was ok I guess. But otherwise, not really that interesting of a supporting cast and I wasn't a fan of the new villains.

I realized, they didn't use Vulture and Black Cat but had those ripoff versions in the show. Weren't Vulture and Black Cat supposed to appear in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3?

most of the fans , makes a resemble with the tdk of nolans attempt to realism

iff they do that with spidey , forget about the labcoat , the lizard must be 3 a 4 times the size of dr conners

thats makes it realistic

can you see the lizard with a tie ?? :woot:

So did this guy actualy get arrested? I saw a few semi-reputable news sources saying he did well after the studio's denial...

black Cat was supposed to appear in S-M2 while Vulture was supposed to be in S-M3 played by Ben Kingsley.

I know fans get behind whatever movie they're hyping is doing before release and for about a year afterwards (example: Dr. Connors is divorced? Cool and realistic!), but this argument is just silly.

A man turning into a lizard monster is believable. Him having torn clothes on is not?

A boy being able to move like a spider from a radioactive bite is realistic, but a torn lab coat crosses some versimilitude line?

IT should be there because it is part of his iconic look. Like Venom needs fangs and a tongue, Doc Ock wears sunglasses, Joker wears a purple suit with green hair and The Kingpin is bald. It's just a definitive part of the character's iconic look. YOu take it away, the character becomes a generic movie villain--in Lizard's case a giant reptilian monster from a B sci-fi movie. Besides, like The Wolfman from last year, the iconic look gives a humanity to the monster of what's been destroyed and makes him more visually interesting to watch.

For the 3rd or 4th time, I think the Lizard will have clothes for certain parts of the movie but I believe that will change when he turns into mega lizard.

But I agree that arguing that maintaing the clothes on the Lizard is too unrealistic is a bit silly. It reminds me of how people used to argue that organic webbing was too unrealistic. I mean, in the end I prefer webshooters, but after a kid gains super strength, speed reflexes and the ability to climb walls, it really isn't that unbelievable for him to be able to shoot web out of his wrists.

I think you'd find most people agree that that was the worst version of Lizard ever created. Partially because of the labcoat--and the stupid fin--but also because it turned Dr. Connors into a lonely, completely evil ambitious man who dies at the end. You'll find in the more popular shows (the '90s one and the one a few years ago) he did have a coat....and a family....and was generally better represented as a tragic character.

I didn't hate the show, it just was kind of mediocre. Going for a darker tone was fine, but it also tried to pander to the MTV audience and the results were blah. Peter was a little too much of a hipster chilling at the coffee shop with indie folk rocker MJ (did they even mention Aunt May or Uncle Ben) and because it tried to follow the movies, his only friends in the cast were Harry and MJ. That's fine on film when you have limited time to develop a lot of characters, but on the show it led to a lack of storyline diversity. Also, was JJJ in it? I can't remember.

I did like NPH, but it just seemed poorly written and out of character a lot of the time (like banging that show-created character on their first date when he and MJ are trying to work out a relationship). And in any case I recall them ruining The Lizard, as well as Black Cat. Rob Zombie for stunt casting worked (the writing didn't), but Eve was awful. I honestly can't remember any of the other villains except for Electro who was okay and Kingpin who was a little too-jokey. But I cannot recall.

I would be fine if for the first few transformations he keeps his clothes and only a few tatters are left by the end of the movie. I'm more arguing against those who say he should not have a labcoat because it would be silly.

I'm with you on that one. The lab coat and pants are iconic and I need to se at least one scene with the Lizard where he has that look.

For once, I want a great superhero movie this generation that doesn't worry about excessive realism and is a faithful, reasonable adaption of the comics.

Oh, wait, Captain America. Well, I want more like that. Directors and studios need to quit being afraid of portraying superheroes and supervillains visually the way the comics do. Red Skull was amazing and faithful. Sandman was amazing and faithful. Doctor Octopus was amazing and faithful. More like that. I want more fantastical, fantasy, impossible in the real world, science fiction villains. Throw as many as you can at me, please, Marvel. I'll eat the hell out of it. It's not that hard!

Also, by faithful, I mean visually.

I didn't like Captain America very much to be honest. It was just kind of boring.
