Rian Johnson Directing Star Wars VIII!

Yeah, I think we're all on the same page here. I don't want Star Wars to look like a Burton movie lol. But each film having its own identity while fitting into a larger whole is hopefully what we're looking at.

Rian tweeted this earlier. Showing his mole skin's of Episode VIII. Seems that he has been writing since May of last year.

By weird and gothic I mean like the unused Mcquarrie concepts of Coruscant (originally Had Abbadon) like so:

They could even create Had Abbadon as a separate planet from Coruscant with style closer to that artwork.

^ I could definitely see that happening given how much they've revisited his original art already.

Hong Kong newspaper reports Donnie Yen cast in Episode VIII:

http://hk.apple.nextmedia.com/enews/realtime/20150706/53936295

It says that filming starts next month. But I wonder what's going on with Rogue One. That's the "One" that's supposed to be filming.

Star Wars 8 "will begin shooting next month

the film company finally decided by the Yen performance, estimate He will fly to London early next month to participate in shooting.

There's a bunch of other rumors about the plot in the article, some of which we've talked about and speculated before.

Twitchfilm:

While the Apple Daily has a reputation for sensationalising rumours like the best tabloid publications, we had heard rumblings that Gareth Edwards and his crew were circling a number of Chinese actors for a part in his standalone film Rogue One, which just starting shooting last week.

So let's wait and see what emerges, but it seems as though Donnie Yen will be joining the Star Wars universe in one capacity or other very soon indeed. Great news, not just for Chinese audiences, but for martial arts fans around the world.

That's so much more visually interesting than the ugly clutter we got in The Phantom Menace.

Donnie Yen is awesome please let this be true :D

The Wrap - ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Eyes Benicio Del Toro to Play Villain (Exclusive)

Variety - Star Wars: Episode VIII': Benicio Del Toro Eyed for Villain Role

Casting for Disney and Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: Episode VIII” is already in motion, as Benicio Del Toro has been offered the role of the villain in the upcoming film, sources tell Variety.

Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac, who will first be seen in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” bowing this Christmas, are all expected to return, with Rian Johnson helming the pic.

A deal is still far away from coming together and who exactly Del Toro will be playing is unknown, but insiders say the studio was going after A-list talent for the role, also meeting Joaquin Phoenix for the role.

The movie will bow on May 26, 2017. Ram Bergman is producing the film with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy.

Del Toro was previously considered for the bad guy in another major franchise: Khan in “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

He was brilliant in the movie Traffic. In fact, he won an Oscar for his role in that film. And he's been getting raves reviews (along with Emily Blunt) for his role in Sicario, at least thus far.

So yeah, I'd love to see him here. As for TFA villains, I could easily see General Hux (ala Tarkin in ANH) or Captain Phasma getting the axe (although I could see Phasma as the kind of villain who keeps weaseling out of trouble as well). "Uber"/Snoke could also bite it if they want Kylo to usurp him as THE main baddie going forward.

I'm all for Benicio, so yes :woot:

Del Toro definitely seems like the ideal fit for this franchise--especially after his turn as The Collector. Now, one just wonders if he'll be a Sith wielder or simply a hand of the First Order.

Interesting that they don't mention Driver's name among the returning cast members. I hope Kylo Ren is not a one-off villain like Darth Maul (or if he is, I hope that when he dies, it actually feels like it matters). They probably don't want to announce his return one way or the other until the movie is out, because that could be a spoiler. But it is interesting that Benicio was offered the role of "the" villain in the film. Maybe Kylo Ren switches sides by the end of TFA? Definitely interesting to think about. I haven't read any spoilers, so I'm pretty much in the dark about this film.

They all but confirmed Kylo's return in the new EW article. We will watch him grow over the trilogy.

Also, it seem BDT confirmed talks.

Now that we know that the Knights of Ren are involved--I presume a Sith replacement--I'm betting Del Toro will be another member of that group. I could easily see him being a higher official, perhaps the man who trained Driver, then we eventually get Serkins character in his full glory in the final episode of this trilogy.

I want the title, a poster and a soundtrack sample.

Even though I haven't completely loved any of Rian Johnson's movies, only liked them, I'm still in love with him as a director and the unique, deliberate directorial style he has. I love his editing, framing and shot-sequencing. I just haven't fallen completely for his scripts/stories so far, while they have all been good and interesting. And even if his complete movies haven't totally gotten to me, just being interesting means a lot for getting interested in the director.

So stoked for Episode VIII and I feel it's the perfect moment for Rian to deliver something truly special.
