The Dark Knight Rises Riddle Me This: The Riddler Characterization Thread

Not only is he too smart for it, but if the Riddler knew Batman's identity, he wouldn't reveal it to the world, because it would make the knowledge worthless to him. And knowledge is what he values, not money. Allow me to reference one of my favorite Riddler moments:

I think that definitively shuts Reese down. It's just a name that was turned into an out-of-hand gimmick.

Ahh Very good and I agree. but where is this from?

Being as though the DCU and Nolanverse are 2 different continuities, that panel is a moot point. When adding Nolanverse realism into the equation, knowing a millionaires secret is the perfect chance to gain profit from a possible version of the riddler.

The characters are still the characters though. They have the same motivations and feelings about things.

And the knowledge itself is 'profit' to Riddler, as I was just saying. Sharing it with the rest of the world diminishes it's value as 'profit'. Reese doing that was a complete contradiction to the Riddler's very essence, his nature.

I dont know if its coincidence but a characters name in The Killing Joke is "Colleen Reese".

Can we finally confirm Johnny Depp as the Riddler, please? I am getting sick of hearing all this talk and rumor of him wanting to play the role and of fans wanting him to play it. I'm more curious of who else will be in the film and in what roles, then anything but I would love for Johnny Depp to play Riddler.

Na not Depp for me. Guy Pearce.

I loved Pearce in Memento, La Confidential, and the Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. I could go either way on this one, Pearce is just as good as Depp, if not better. So, I would still be happy if Pearce was cast, instead. :yay:

I like Guy Pearce. But I have this terrible notion that he will end up similar like he was in Memento, lol.

Aahh yes, back to actors. Nice and simple.

Jude Law could totally pull off the look and demeanor.

Paul Bettany and David Tennant are actors I adore, but they're a bit too cartoony to me (even in serious roles).

Johnny Depp could bring us a unique and very interesting Riddler, but I think he's kind of been overexposed lately and everyone will probably be burned out on seeing him so much by the time BB3 swings around - then again, maybe his career will have cooled a bit instead? It's gonna be like 3 years after all.

I'll have to look into Guy Pearce. Anyone got any recommendations or YouTube links that would give a Riddler-y impression?

Memento:yay:

I just think that if Harto could ellicit such revulsion and annoyance from the audience, then he could be a great Riddler.

Possibly. But I just found the guy annoying, and that's not a good thing. People don't like to watch annoying lead villains, because it's just, well...annoying.

Not only that, but I think the Riddler needs to have a sense of danger about him as well. He has to seem like an actual threat. I don't have confidence that Reese could give off the proper aura needed for the film's main villain.

Were you impressed by the way he didn't remotely think things through and got downright owned by Fox? Having such a vapor-thin mind isn't very Riddler-esque if you ask me..

And what does he do after that? He goes on TV and exposes himself to the Joker, who owns him as well. The guy is a joke, ronny. He nearly died because of his stupidity. Do you really think of the Riddler as someone who makes such dumb choices?

Wouldn't you say that an unhealthy ego often leads to stupid, rash decisions?
Although I admit that you've got several good points. Especially the one about Riddler not being able to tell people who Batman is. It's not a choice for him, I don't think he can help it.

Here's what I don't get. Did you find him annoying because the acting was bad?
Because I think Reese was meant to be irritating. I think Riddler is too, just like anyone who rubs their intelligence in your face. Riddler is not a likeable guy and shouldn't be portrayed as such. Don't you think?

ronny...are you really the guy that played Reese? Im sure if you uped youre acting and were less irritating, youd make a great Riddler. lol.

I picked this up of wikia

There is some speculation that Reese will become The Riddler in the next film, but there is little proof to support this other than his name, 'Mister Reese' (Mysteries). His high self-esteem concerning his aptitude, desire to gain more power and prestige, and feelings about Bruce Wayne may also inspire a criminal career. Besides that, the alter-ego of The Riddler was shown to be an employee of Wayne Enterprises in the story of Batman Forever. Christopher Nolan could have inspired story for the third film by this.

But I believe Chris will create a new origin for him. FBI Agent or PI are my hopes.

I don't believe half the stuff on Wiki but "Mister Reese - Mysteries"..Hmm..Never thought about that..

Hmm, I think I would say that that depends on the person.

Someone of high intelligence with an unhealthy ego may be egotistical about never making mistakes, for example.

I think The Riddler can often misjudge people because he considers no one his equal. If you spend your entir time looking down on others, it's not surprising when you find yourself lost for words when they outsmart you.

Though I can certainly see where you're coming from. It seemed foolish of Reese, like this was some idea he just plucked out of thin air. Ten million ever year? Sounds like some childish fantasy, doesn't it?
The Riddler's a planner, Reese seemed far more impulsive and desperate.

It might be interesting to see Jude Law take some of the elements from his version of Watson and incorporate them into a Riddler character. However a good portion of the movie is him playing straight-man against Holmes. After all, he is a huge foil.

It's also interesting to me to see the names of former Joker-favorites resurfacing as Riddler suggestions.
