Eh, the CGI monkeys still look....CGI.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Curious George look-alikes.

Ah, so that's where it's from. I didn't even know. Ya got a problem with JoBlo?

if they will spent a lot of time with Franco and Caesar then it could work.i have a feeling that 1 week in the cage will make him hate the whole humn race. which would be stupid. i hope he is in there at least for 6 months.

the statue of liberty homage was a joke.

He needs to say "Get yer stinking hands offa me, you damn dirty humans!"

Just watched the 2nd International trailer. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect, and I was taken aback. It seems like Caesar's tale is going to be very touching and sad.

I hope the story's strong enough to overcome the SFX weaknesses.

1) trailers never show cgi in final form. There's improvement between the trailers and actual final film.
2) I personally didn't see any "weak" cgi. I found it to be very life like. I have a feeling you are confusing your knowledge that a monkey is cg with the idea that the cg is "weak". This isn't a movie where we aren't sure if its cg or real because apes don't emote and aren't intelligent like the movie is portraying. The goal of the movie's cgi isn't to confuse us about what is real and what isn't; it's about making us forget that it isn't real. I KNOW where it's cg just based on my knowledge of reality; but that knowledge does not mean the cg in question is bad or weak.

Yeah the CG looks great to me. What is the budget on this?

its a rushed movie so the budget is bigger then it should be.

No. Rushing a movie means spending bookoos of cash to get it done on time.

True, which I hope is the case. Not sure how much hope there is though.

I didn't need to know ANYTHING to spot the CGI Ceasar(mainly because of the face). It looks fairly obvious. As I said before, hopefully the story and performances are really strong to allow me to give the dodgey SFX a pass. But considering the premise(smart apes rise up against mankind) is flawed to begin with(since humans outnumber apes by about 1,000,000 - 1...and have guns/military/technology), I'm not sure about how much one can hope for there as well.

Based off the latest trailer, does anyone notice the historic elements of the film? What I mean by that is based off parts of the trailer:

The brutal treatment of the apes by the humans, which leads to a violent and bloody uprising by the oppressed. Reminds me a bit of the European Colonizations of Africa and the Americas, which were at times oppressive (French in Algeria, Spain in most of Latin America, The British during the era of the American Revolution, Portuguese in Africa, Belgians in the Congo).

Considering you call your self the "superhero movie analyst", I'm surprised at your lack of discerning fantasy's ability to not be held down by the logic and limitations of reality. That's why its called fantasy.

True, its a tough sell - but the history of this movie is a well known one - +40 years worth of public knowledge and love of the franchise will prove itself useful in allowing the more fantastical elements to be accepted within the universe this movie and its franchise has created.

The biggest thing I would be worried about is Franco's acting. He was ok in the the Spidey flicks and I enjoyed him in Pinapple Express, but I think they could have used someone with more skill to anchor this movie.

Not necessarily. It also means cutting a lot of corners.

edit: this site claims the budget to be $100 mil.

That IS a nice chunck of change, but considering this years big budget films (Thor, X-Men, Green Lantern) had budgets well over that, I would still consdier RotPotA to have a decidedly "smaller" budget; which, combined with the rushed schedule, makes the FX work al lthe more impressive.

I am used to suspending disbelief in films like this. But I expect the movie to address such problems in some way to make doing so easier for me. That's what I appreciate about such movies. Good ones are full of thought and thinking ahead to problems before the audience does it for them. And maybe they DID address the issue I brought up. I just have a hard time imagining how(and I've got a pretty good imagination for stuff like this). It just makes me worry that they might give up and not address it at all(which happens all the time in bad movies).

Now in the 3rd film(of the original films...which is my 2nd favorite after the 1st film), they explained that the whole ape taking over thing took centuries after man started using apes as pets when a plague killed off all the dogs & cats. THAT kind of time frame is much more plausible since you'd figure that the ape's population would have to grow exponentially to service their master's needs. It's still fantasy/scifi but done in a more logically acceptable way...don't you see?

I've found Franco to be on and off depending on the film as well.

The apes in the other Planet films were obviously makeup and costumes, so this is just carrying on the tradition. You can kind of tell they tried to make Caesar's face somewhat favor what the original apes look like as a precursor.

This film is only $100 million? I thought it was more than that.

I think the CGI looks incredible, some shots are downright creepy IMO.

I don't know about all of that or if it is intentional, but part of what made the original apes movies good sci-fi was they had strong social commentary. I think that was mainly a contribution of Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame when he rewrote the script for the original. The first Apes movie always felt like a long, big budget episode of Twilight Zone to me.

Now see, if you ever see a monkey with that kind of look on his face, get your ass up outta Dodge.
