The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Rotten Tomatoes score? - Part 4

I really liked Harry in TASM 2, in fact I wish I could have seen more of him as Goblin than we did. Being said though, really he should have had more focus, and he should have died after he killed Gwen.

Thunk about Peter's line in the comics, "funny, I thought it would make me feel better to see the goblin die, but somehow I just feel empty, and maybe just maybe, a little more alone" it would have solidified Peter's tragedy. Losing his first love and in that same encounter losing his best friend along with her.

Another gripe I have is with the cartooniness of Rhino and Electro. Why did they cast Jamie Fox in that role? He did a good job don't get me wrong, but if they wanted a wacky African American why not say Will Smith or Donny Glover? Someone who isn't as cool as Fox is at least.

Honestly I enjoyed the movie but it's a far cry from what it could have been and what it should have been. I'd say it was better than Spider-Man 3, but a far cry from Spider-Man 2. In the end it just felt too episodic and hallow. There wasn't the emotional resonance that you had with the first two raimi films or even the last Webb film. It was just running off of hype rather than substance. 6/10.

Uhhhh yeah. Harry Osborn is a tragic character. The Harry in this film? No, he's vain, callous, and a brat.

There is a destinction between the comics and the movies. The COMIC Harry is tragic the movie Harry doesn't have to be.

Which always brings up my question....why buy a project with a rich and long history...if you only plan on rewriting it anyway? Why make a Spider-Man movie with his cast of characters if you are going to change so much of the history that preceeds it? Just create your own new character and surround him with all the new characters you want to create.

C.Lee how did you rate the movie?

For me is was a 5 out of 10. There were some things I loved, some things I hated....it sort of evened out as average.

I wouldn't like the movie to take too many liberties with the title character and to a certain extent the supporting cast. They took a sympathetic Harry in the comic and turned him into an unlikeable brat, but I enjoyed the movies' portrayal but then I never had any invested love of the character before hand so the changes were thing with me.

I can understand people's gripes towards Harry but for me he was one of my favorite things about the movie. I absolutely preferred him to Franco's Harry despite far less screen time and being less like the comic rendition of the character. Each to their own.

Is he supposed to be tragic?

That's a rhetorical question right? Of course Harry Osborn is supposed to be tragic.

That's an assumption.

No, it's a fact. A common one, too. You have read the Spider-Man comics right?

The words that first come out of his mouth are of an entitled spoilt brat with abandonment issues, right down to his 'every wants my money' line.
The movie even calls that out with Makin's 'the difference is no one will miss you' put down. Was he supposed to be sympathetic? I'm sorry but I don't think he was.

Oh you're talking about the TASM 2 version? I thought you were referring to Harry the comic book character. Yes, the TASM 2 Harry was completely unsympathetic and a complete bastardization of the character. But he was clearly supposed to be sympathetic with his father's ill treatment of him, and him being cursed with a lethal genetic condition. The problem is the character was executed in the most unlikable way. He wasn't sympathetic at all.

DeHaan gave a good performance but that was not Harry of the comics.

So you need to be shown every scene?

Absolutely. When it comes to key character relationships it's very much show and don't tell. Peter and Gwen's relationship would never have been as good as it was if we were just told they were in love without showing it.

The chemistry between Peter and Harry with the 'There he is' line was MORE than enough to convey the friendship they shared as kids.

Maybe for you it was. But for me, and I imagine for most general audiences they need more than a quick throwaway line to buy into a friendship.

It's just one of many examples of the horrible lazy writing this movie has.

Just because Raimi went with sympathy with HIS Harry (like all of his villains) don't assume Web is with his version of Harry.

I'm not assuming, I know he's supposed to be sympathetic. The circumstances he was thrust in was supposed to make the audience empathize with him fighting for his life.

Exactly

I couldn't agree more. That Harry in TASM 2 was the antithesis of Harry of the comics. They ruined the whole Goblin storyline.

Don't try and start a Raimi comparison/war. Especially with C. Lee in the house!

Agree to disagree. I've been a Spidey comic reader since 8 and watched every cartoon incarnation of the character and had no problem with ASM2 interpretation of Harry. If you wanted a comic accurate version of Harry that is a fair request but I had no problems with the changes.

I've been a Spidey comic reader since I was 7....but I dare say that was a lot longer ago than your 8 :woot: I grew up with Spidey, Peter, Harry, Gwen, and the rest as they were growing up too. I remember reading Pete and Harry being friends, the drug use, finding out his father was the Green Goblin......too bad we didn't get that here. :csad:

How would you rate the Raimi films and The Amazing Spider-Man 1?

I totally understand why people invested in those comics would want certain aspects of them to always be maintained. I personally don't think they have to follow anything. I don't expect creative people to have to be bound by the source material. In the same way different arcs of and runs of the comics have gone off to different areas.

Killing Harry in this movie would've had no emotional effect because he had just been introduced so it was hard to buy him as Peter's best friend. Gwen's death had substance because her relationship with Peter had been built up over two films.

Didn't you give a 8/10 or 9/10 to X-Men Origins: Wolverine?

His death wouldn't have any impact no, in fact it may have been satisfying. However I believe peters reaction would have some emotional weight. Where you see him conflicted, welling with emotion, and looking at the two lifeless bodies of his friend and lover. EDIT: also a big thematic opportunity was missed here. Peter spent the first movie protecting Gwen from his fathers past, when in the end the person to kill her came from his own. I really feel the whole death sequence in General was just rushed. The movie should have put more weight on the mourning and the loss and maybe reflected a bit on uncle Ben too.

I understand everyone's gripes with Harry but from a critical stand point Dehaans performance was a highlight. Well that's the general consensus at least. Idk it didn't bother me too much, honestly as a whole they were pretty accurate to the source material, there were huge flaws in the film, but not being true to the comics? That's a gripe you can't sell me on, at least compared to the other superhero flicks out there.

Was anyone honestly expecting them to do the whole "Norman is the first Goblin-Peter,you killed my father!" thing like the last film series, which wrapped up less then a decade ago?

I mean, yeah,I'd like it to be that way too,but it was an unrealistic expectation to have.I didn't think the the variation was too bad,but I've got somewhat lower expectations for this series as it is.

Does this mean those people hate 90s animated or Spectacular Spider-man too? wow smh

I have to say at least with the negative reception to the new film there's less for the sake of it trash talking of the raimi flicks.

Most likely by going to the Raimi thread and saying it. :awesome:

and The Amazing Spider-Man 1?
A 7 out of 10.

I have no idea. I rarely give ratings, because people like to start crap about them if they don't agree. But I probably would given it something like that. I liked it.

It would have been nice if they had followed the books.

Almost any kind of expectations when it comes to comic adaptations are unrealistic. It's nice when they follow the books or don't change things too much.

It amazes when this is even questioned. You put it perfectly C. Lee. What is the point if you are just going to rewrite history to the point where the characters are unrecognizable?

Which characters are unrecognisable? And to who?

I like that line in the comics too, but after he got Gwen killed, I doubt Peter would give two poops about Harry dying. If they insist on taking up the "best friends" angle after this (which in itself was questionable, considering how rushed it was), I will call bull. Seriously, I'd say Harry is beyond redemption at this point.

Also, Electro was enough of a nothing role for Jamie Foxx, who's a great actor with his star on the rise. I doubt Will Smith would have wanted to even come near it.

Foxx said he did the movie because his daughter loves Spider-Man, but I can't blame the critics for feeling the part was a waste of an Oscar winning actor.
