Hey I'm not one to give SR a hard time. I've been a supporter for a long time. Truly have no reason to talk crap against it, hell I've seen it 4 times in the theatre. Good film, could be great upon future DVD viewings :) Take this with a grain of salt, dismiss it if it makes you feel better but I'm confident it's credible info.

An entire interview with Brandon Routh from the L.A. Times has been pulled due to what WB reps feel could be perceived as a negative comment.

When asked "Do you believe the POTC sequel is the cause of SR not performing as well at the box office as expected, or was there any other factor?" Routh answered "I don't think a pirate can beat Superman, well maybe if he had some kryptonite. (laughs) The only factor I might consider is that some fans weren't prepared or ready for a returns story."

That's not the comment that scrapped it btw, this is the one that did apparently.

When asked "Would you have preferred an origin based story?" Routh replied "Preferred? I don't know. I would have enjoyed it, I think some fans were wanting or expecting an origin story."

I'd have preferred it. I like routh more now.

suck it, WB. Origin would have been great... now 200+mil is probably never going to be spent on another supes movie and a superman begins movie gets shafted...blah....

thank god for Nolan

An movie telling the origin for the gazillionth time would be the absolute last thing on the face of the Earth I´d have any desire to see.

None of this sounded like reason to scrap the interview. Routh isn´t saying what he preferred, just what he thinks some fans were expecting.

:up:I agree with you on that one dude.

Would it have been necessary to retell Superman's origin in modern times with modern technology? Probably not.

Would it have been cool to see? IMO, yes.

Would I have preferred an origin story? um...

yes.

:runs away:

with an origin, we get it all.

New Superman
New Lex Luthor. He'd hate land.
Fresh story
New Lois so her being so young would make more sense
More insight into superman's development
A hell of a closer comic interpretation that's for sure
No vague sequel confusion.

It'd be amazing.

Thank God for Nolan.

an origin movie....done fresh and creatively........would have been much better......

IMO, SR failed to connect with the audience on a fundamentel level.....that is....we really didn't get a chance to know the characters......we were just kind of thrown into a storyline that was already going.......

Plus more of Martha AND Jonathan! Something this movie severely lacked. :(

(again, I loved SR.)

Nothing wrong with more martha and Jonathan.

Let me tell ya, When Richard Donner said he'd do so many things different if he made STM today, my mind went wild dreaming of what he'd plan to do whether it was eliminate otis, not have clark be as goofy, or have lex not wear any wigs etc...etc....

my dreams are gone now.

Thank god for Nolan.

hey JC! nice to see you again in these parts :)

you got the full interview? it would be a good read.

When asked "Would you have preferred an origin based story?" Routh replied "Preferred? I don't know. I would have enjoyed it....

i'll take that as the actor wanting an origin tale too.

.... I think some fans were wanting or expecting an origin story."
what do they call that in psychology, the term where you project your emotions onto someone else? tranference or something? he's doin' it right there. :p

Loved SR, but an origin movie might have been good- just not the Abrams origin film. Abrams origin made alot- if not everything wrong, in my opinion.

you know, if you really think about it, an origin story for Superman has only been done on the big screen once... and that's it.

i think it could of been a good thing to do.

I would have no mercy... if I was making a superman movie. This origin movie would be the new gold standard, above anything in batman begins. That scene with young clark is an example of how it'd be but without the glasses. He doesn't need glasses back then.

Spider-man would be jealous of superman's box office!

People would be saying Spider-who?

It'd be based on versimilitude, and it'd be brilliant. The action would make Keanu Reeves jealous. The story would be uplifting and fun. The dogs wouldn't be mistreated. It'd be a new generation's superman like the new generation's batman.

we'd see superman show us why he's the king of super heros. It'd be as if you opened a comic and suddenly it was playing in your head like a movie.

Thank god for nolan.

that's the kind of movie I was wanting to see...

now i'm depressed.

Singer is the devil! He blew the chance of a lifetime, and if he's given another chance (Which he doesn't deserve!) he will blow it also, because his ego has been telling him this whole time that he did no wrong, and that it was all marketing, and pirates that beat his pathetic crapfest of a film... Singer is the Anti Christ of Superhero characters!

Please WB no more Singer, no more vague-history sequel storylines, and hire a whole new cast for the next movies...

Wait 10 years, and START OVER!
Or expand the smallville cast in 5 years to the big screen... :)

i guess we'll just have to wait another 10/20/30 years..........sigh....

oh well.....we can always imagine the perfect origin story movie in our heads..........

Yours is nothing compared to my own.

Batman's begins movie would look like nothing compared to an epic new retelling of superman's story. It would emphasize the uncorruptable strength of an alien's love for his people, and his home, much like begins emphasizes the fearlessness of a man willing to fight to return hope to the hopeless.

Strength, hope, truth and justice for all.

but now

poof

it's gone.

btw....I'm also learning that they've given comic book Batman a couple of illegitimate children ( apparently ol' Bruce has been getting busy with Talia and Catwoman ).........well...so much to complete devotion and self-sacrifice to your cause....lol.....

hmmmm.....I wonder if this is all a ploy to bastardize our super-heroes and destroy their iconic images...........sigh......

It wouldnt have mattered.Superman Returns is a let down for some. But i would have prefered Routh saying that.If this comment was made after the film came out, with the low numbers, then its a stint by WB to try and keep Routh quiet so people could see the movie.

If the comment was made before the movie came out,WB oviously tried to hush rumors the movie was going to be a dud from the start.

I think they did that to BATMAN in the comics to stop the rumor's about Bruce, and Dick... :o

Well, Batman having a child with Talia goes all the way back to the superb 1987 Graphic Novel Son of the Demon. It was kept a secret from him, the only difference is now he knows about the child. And to Talia the child is not illegitimate, as she and Batman were "married" in a ceremony by Ra's Al Ghul, only Batman refuses to acknowledge the marriage as a real one. As for Catwoman, all I know is that she has a daughter named Helena now...father unknown. The reason everyone assumes it's Batman's child is because the Golden Age/Earth 2 Batman married Catwoman and they had a daughter named Helena who grew up to be the original Huntress. I think that the Powers that Be at DC are throwing a curveball at us and playing with fan's expectations a bit. After all, they have yet to reveal who the father is.

But if Batman and Talia's son is a "ploy to bastardize our super-heroes and destroy their iconic images", then it started almost 20 years ago.

I can empathize with how you feel (even though I disagree). But having Smallville brought to a big screen? It'd be like racing a Pinto at the Indy 500. You could do it. Doesn't mean you should.;)

Well I think the show's cast is near perfect, and a step above the last movie... I wouldn't mind it at all I mean they could start the movie a good 10 years after the last show so the tempo, and feel of the movie could be whatever vision the director chose because people change alot in 10 years.
So the movie wouldnt have the same exact feel of the show which is a lower budgeted show compared to a hollywood blockbuster film.
The transition would be perfect if they had the right persons making the thing... But a total restart with a whole new cast/director is good enough for me also... I just hate Singer, and his wack vision.
