...its been laying there for no one knows how long. Assume there's a fat guy that is trying to kill you. How realistic would it be for you to be able to rip a pair of rib bones from the body and stab the big guy in the throat?

This is for a scene in a story I am writing. Thank you for you help guys. :)

It depends on how long the body has been there. Ribs aren't exactly brittle or sharp for that matter.

Um... Anything you wanna tell us, Alligator?

There's an ex-samurai who got shipped off to a prison for the murder of his feudal lord and a fat man is going to eat him unless he can kill the fat man.

@Ferret: Say maybe a day at the most?

If only a day it would be somewhat difficult...

How strong is the ex samurai?

The real question here is "How Bad Ass Is Your Hero?" It would be unrealistic, but if you are writing this with hopes for a movie, think about what a kick ass scene it would be on the big screen.

Nah, its more for a local magazine, so fairly realistic. I may just have him grab a chamber pot or something and brain the fat guy, or maybe a good old groin kick, then go ape**** on him.

The idea of writing with a movie in mind strikes me as something Paolini did with some scenes from his Inheritance books.

A day would make it just as hard as ripping out a rib from a freshly killed person. Decomposition takes a lot longer than that.

If the ex-samurai (would "ronin" count here?) is strong enough, and has some time before the fat man comes for him, he could break off a rib to stab the fat man. This would be more realistic in two ways, it shows the effort needed to get the rib, and supplies a reason for it to be sharp enough to break through human skin.

He's an ex-Samurai, it would be fairly simple for him. Not to rip, necessarily, but to break the rib in multiple places and remove it. Chances are pretty high that it would come out sharp.

He wouldn't go to prison if he were a Samurai in Feudel Japan. He would be executed on the spot for killing the Lord.

Take this to the Mythbusters board. Maybe they will do a show on it.

...and SuBe effectively kills the thread.

Yeah, I'd think if the body is destroyed, and the rib cage is completely exposed, it might be possible for him to grab one end of a rib, then kick down on the attached end...much like you'd break a big stick.

Of course, in order to do this, he'd have to pry the rib from the sternum first (which'll be hard to do considering muscle and cartilage).

It could be a hanging rib, but there'd still be cartilage to break there.

Why is there a fat man's corpse just lying around?

You expect everybody to dispose of their trash properly?

And here I was thinking this was the start of a morbid joke. Color me disappointed.
