I think by using a real dog takes away from Scooby even if they CG the mouth.
You can still give him some personality, the 101 Dalmations live action adaptation didn't have the dogs speak, and it worked better for that. When it comes to these kinds of cartoon adaptations, they need to offer a different perspective on the main concept, while still being close to the source material.
The previous adaptation already sticked way too close to it, the new one shouldn't try doing the same, especialy when we know it didn't work.
I say, do a creepy mystery film for kids, anyone remembers Monster House? That film was realy creepy for a children's movie, with Scooby-Doo i would also be expecting an atmosphere closer to the Universal Horror films.
