I love Parker Posey the actress. Every Christopher Guest movie she's in she's a brilliant comedic force in. Most of the '90s indies she did before Scream 3 she was brilliant in. I even thought she was the only redeeming part beyond Wesley Snipes himself of Blade Trinity (strangely another trilogy closer that sucked she was apart of).

However, her character just was too one-dimensional, cartoony and annoying. She tagged along more than any new character and therefore was the only one of the new characters of S3 that I can even recall, but she had no spark or personality. Hailee was more memorable and that is saying something. She represented what was wrong with S3....just kind of annoying, poorly written comedy with no depth of personality. Her character just did not work for me.
 
I fall into the category of those that appreciate Scream 3 for what it was. Yeah, it was cheesy, a lot less violent, and often overtly comical, but it had it's moments. The opening was pretty cool and different, but still very "Scream", and I liked some of the phone calls and certain beats of the film. The new voice changer that was introduced was also put the good use, I thought. Of course it's a completely unrealistic concept, but it presented us with a fresh way for the killer to make calls, and also added to the mystery.

Also didn't hate the fact that Roman was the killer, but the movie didn't use him as much as it should have. He was barely around at all, and if you go back and watch the film again (which I just did), it is quite apparent that he is the killer. He's the only one missing when every murder takes place! And his "red herring" death was just lame and a cop-out, with Gale even checking his pulse and deeming him dead.

To me, Roman's motive is just about as valid as Mrs. Loomis' silly one. "You killed my crazy son who tried to kill you and all your friends! So now I'm gonna go crazy and try to kill you and your friends too!!" I appreciated that Scream 3 followed the trilogy guidelines, going back to the original and delving deeper into Maureen Prescott's past. At the end of the day, each of the killers from the original three Scream films have the same idea behind their killing sprees: Maureen Prescott was a ****e and she sucked. This is all because of her, so I thought it was cool that Scream 3 used that and literally kept it "in the family".

With that said, the film was weak in its execution. It still feels like a Scream film to me and follows an natural arc of progression for the main cast, but there were many missed opporunities. Overall, some things seemed lazy. There needed to be more of a sense of urgency, and I think a better move for the 3rd film would have been to go a little DARKER in tone rather than LIGHTER. I don't blame Craven or the filmmakers. He was pressed by the studio to lighten it up and change the setting, following the Columbine shooting.

Regardless, Scream 4 is the stronger entry. It's a much tighter, well-crafted mystery. Brutal but also very funny, and probably the best way they could have "remade" Scream. The film is filled with memorable "Scream" moments. :up:

Keeping it in the crave family here. They analysis the situation and make sense. Also let's just take a moment here to see that the international numbers haven't been updated since the 17th, so the 49 million number is not likely to be it's current number as I doubt it really hasn't made anything at all outside the United States since then.

"Scream 5" Is Not Happening?

So much for a second trilogy. The hope of "Scream 4" was that it would launch a new series of films. Decidedly mixed reviews and poor box-office however may have nixed those plans.
Moviehole spoke with a contact at Dimension Films who says "The 'Scream' franchise will likely end here, at least for the moment" and plans for a so-called trilogy "stops here". However, they did add that the film series may have future as a direct-to-DVD franchise ala "American Pie".
With a production budget at $40 million, "Scream 4" opened with $18.7 million, almost half that of its two immediate predecessors. Its second weekend wasn't much help either, the film plummeting by 62.4% despite little to no competition. International grosses are also proving somewhat lacklustre.
 
Moviehole? Dark Horizons? Don't they tend to spread alot of ********? Get me a sight that actually has a well known rep. Industry chatter articles tend to piss me off, because it's a bunch of people just posting hearsay.

^^ True. I'll believe it whe nwe get confirmation, although, I'm starting to think we really aren't getting Scream 5. Not right now, anyway.
 
I'll say that this happened with Tron too. And yes I know that's Disney and they have megabucks to throw away, but it was underperforming and people seriously doubted a Tron 3, yet....Tron 3 on it's way.

Industry chatter is just that chatter. I'll take an official source and be on my way once it's said whatever way is happening.

It's being monitored closely , we can't rule out Scream 5 just yet. I do think it's unlikely but if it does happen I'd rather them cut production cost than consider a reboot or dtv .
 
I think Worldwide Numbers haven't even been updated since the 17th. I sincerly doubt it's still at the same total there.

And lulz at the idea of a remake/reboot after an installment that gave a middle finger to them.

No offense SMH, but this post reminds me of the Superman Returns board after it underperformed. "The sequel isn't dead until Warners confirms it!" The thing is, studios don't generally issue press releases that say, "Our movie failed, we won't be making a sequel." They just quietly nix their plans and lick their wounds.

And the Tron Legacy comparison is a bit off as TL ended up doubling its budget, which means that DVD sales were probably nothing but pure profit. Scream 4 has only pulled in about 17 million internationally so far and international gross doesn't matter much as it costs more to distribute over seas.

Scream 4 will, IMO, need to at least hit 80-100 million WW to get a theatrical sequel. Its not looking like it will happen. I'd count on Scream 5 going direct to DVD.
 
Just to clarify, worldwide numbers are the equivilant to DVR and online viewings for TV shows. Yeah, they matter a little, but the profit involved with them is so minimal that they don't matter all that much.
 
And finally, Tron is a rare case because it is Disney. Worldwide distribution is usually more expensive as there is a middle man involved taking a cut of the profit (meaning the theater, studio, and international distributor split it three ways). Its my understanding (and I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not) that Disney is one of two major studios who distributes worldwide themselves (cutting out the middle man). Therefore they stand to make more from international box office.

Tron may be getting a sequel despite lackluster domestic performance due to good international numbers but they are very much so the exception rather than the rule. For every example like Tron, you can find ten examples of movies that kick ass internationally and receive no sequel due to disappointing domestic grosses.

Scream is the Weinsteins baby. It's what made them big. Remember, they started as a genre company. Would they really throw away their beloved franchise so easily?

Absolutely. The Weinsteins did not get rich by being loyal. Kevin Smith is proof of that. Scream isn't their baby or beloved franchise. It was only ever an investment to them.
 
I don't want a single Scream movie to go straight to DVD. That will cheapen the series and make it into a joke.

Please, just end it here.
 
Not sure if Tron Legacy will still get a sequel but it has still made $400 million worldwide.
 
I loved Tron Legacy. I think they confirmed a Tron sequel a few weeks ago in a magazine. I'm not quite sure, though.
 
I think it's safe to assume Scream 5 won't happen. Albeit, I am skeptical about the DTV movie rumors. TWC will do that to Halloween before Scream which is one of their babies along with the Viewaskewiaverse and all things Tarantino.

However, I bet in 15-20 years they will remake Scream making S4 even more ironic.
