If Dewey is killed, then that gives the story some meat to work with because Sid and Gale have had their differences, but are just getting closer after the events of Scream 3 and 4, the drama of Dewey's death would be a pretty good topic to bond the two into an even better pair of friends throughout the whole movie.
Oh look. It works and even has an extra less predictable kick if you make it Dewey instead of Gale.
