Scream 5 in Development

It doesn't ignore or retcon any of the sequels.

Seems like they went with Scream because 1) it's a legacy sequel and 25 years after the original, and 2) If this spawns more sequels, they won't have to name the sequels "Scream 6" or "Scream 7". They can do what Halloween is doing with different sequel titles that aren't numeric, and 3) It's just simpler and more iconic.

I kinda wish it was called Scream 5, but I can live with it.

They're not ignoring the previous films. We already know from certain things that even Scream 4 and even Scream 3 are being treated as canon in this film.

I think this film is going to be meant to inject new life into the franchise while honoring what came before. Scream 4 was a bit of an anti-remake/reboot at the end of the day. Sounds like this may be more fully embracing being a legacy sequel/reboot. If they can pull it off, I'm down. I'm so damn curious as to what this movie is going to be.

Would love a teaser soon...

They are capitalizing off the Halloween route. I don't like it, but it is what it is.

NOBODY SAID THEY WERE IGNORING THE SEQUELS.

What we said is that it gives the IMPRESSION of ignoring the sequels by following in the Halloween title footsteps.

They could still do that without just calling it Scream.

I guess I just don't mind if it's "giving the impression", if the actual content of the film still treats all the films as canon. A title is just a title at the end of the day.

I mean, even Scream 4 kind of played on it with the SCRE4M title treatment.

I wouldn't mind if the internet collectively decides to call it Scream 5 anyway though, haha. That way we don't have to say Scream (1996) from now on to distinguish what movie we're referring to.

I’ll call it Scream 5 on my custom Blu-ray art... that matches my 1-4 art.

Hype overload. Going to marathon the series this weekend.

On Facebook, I see the usual Halloween 2018 haters getting extremely upset about this. Here's my thing, this film is definitely a relaunch while also being a sequel. Therefore, in my mind, it just being titled SCREAM is understandable.

Complaining about the title is a waste of time, IMO. The titles have never been too important to this franchise. They just slapped numbers on top of "Scream".

It's clear that this is not only a sequel, but a "reset" for the franchise, bringing things back to the beginning. And if this is meant to be "Scream" for a new generation, the title makes perfect sense. Plus, like I said earlier, it's much easier to market as "Scream" than it would be as "Scream 5" or "5cream".

I completely agree.

Good article with words from Radio Silence. I'm really happy with everything they're saying.

Radio Silence Breaks Their Silence about Paying Tribute to Wes Craven & Being a Part of the Slasher Resurgence with SCREAM

Woah, there have been script leaks? I guess I haven't been following as close as I thought I was. Not that I mind, I'd like to go in as fresh as possible.

That article is great. They're definitely saying things that make me feel like this movie is being guided in the right direction. I love the idea of poking fun at the idea of "elevated horror", as if horror hasn't had substance under the surface before.

I have a friend who's a horror nut that doesn't like the Scream films because he feels they take a dump on horror and act like they're smarter than the genre. I've always tried to argue that they are more like love letters to the genre than anything. Sounds like that's how Radio Silence is approaching this movie too.

I'm really excited for this. I think this might be my most anticpated film right now.

Thankfully, they say they created multiple fake scripts and also gave different versions of the script to cast members in order to preserve the twists and identity of the killer(s). I really hope they are able to keep all that **** on lock.

Same.

Another great interview with Radio Silence.

Interview: Directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Producers Chad Villella and William Sherak Provide Some Insights into the Upcoming SCREAM (2022) - Daily Dead

They're really saying all the right things to and sounds like they did their homework. They talk about listening to all of Wes' commentaries on the first 4 films and old interviews, which is so cool to hear. This was a standout quote for me:

"They're about lineage. They're about the evolution of pop culture and the evolution of the genre. You can't have something new without also giving a nod to what came before it, and paying respect and giving a bow to what allowed you to tell the story that you were telling, or the film that you love, doesn't exist in a vacuum. There are many things that came before it that influenced what it is. So for us, it just felt like that was the only right way to do it, was to have a connection to the past and to find a way to create new and interesting characters that would bring a new audience and an old audience together, and hopefully move the whole thing forward in a contemporary and terrifying and fun way.”

“To put it simply, if it was a completely new reboot, we wouldn't have been interested,” explained Villella. “But the fact that it is Sidney and Gale and Dewey and Judy [played by Marley Shelton], that's like, ‘Oh, cool. This lineage is what makes Scream, Scream.’ That's why the interest is there, and that's why we're very excited to be making it.”

And more 5 Cream goodness from Jack:

If the reports are true about them stepping back a bit with the 'meta' aspect, I don't think that's necessarily bad. I get that the 'meta'-quality is a key part in what makes Scream what it is, but it's also a trait that got bigger and worse as the series went on. Scream 4 took it overboard IMO and that opening sequence was a bit too much 'wink wink' to the audience for my taste.

Agreed.

"Meta" is in Scream 1 when Sidney is on the phone with Ghostface saying she doesn't like horror movies because the killer is always chasing some dumb girl who runs up the stairs when she should be running out the front door...and then Sidney goes on to do exactly that and runs up the stairs when the killer starts chasing her. There are so many moments like that in the original films, proof that you can be self-aware and self-referential in more subtle ways than Scream 4.

The meta and self-referential thing can definitely become a snake eating its own tail the deeper you get into the series. I think Williamson is right to be weary of that. It doesn't mean this movie won't have that element. It will. But you don't have to make it the mission to out-meta the previous entry.

It's like the equivalent of an action franchise getting back to basics rather than trying to outdo the CGI-porn of previous entries. Doesn't mean their still won't be action.

Well, the whole fact of a serial killer who knows and quotes other horror movies was the meta-ness of it. And of course Randy telling us about the "rules" to survive a horror movie. I don't think that had ever been done before in horror. Though The Howling did reference werewolf movies and I think The Lost Boys and Fright Night had some meta Vampire movie mentions.

Wouldn't it be ****ing wild if Kirby was the killer? :funny: She was left for dead and forgotten and snapped.

LOL. A lot of Scream fans are fixated on Kirby and want Scream 5 to address her "fate", even if she isn't in the film. Personally, I don't really care and I'm happy to assume she died. She was one of the more interesting and well-acted characters in Scream 4 (which isn't saying much), but I don't really get the hubbub about her.

However, she was super hot.

Never saw it as FiveCream until those tweets, looks ridiculous :funny:

I’m glad they didn’t go that route
