Scream 5 in Development

I’ll be curious to see if they take Craven’s words about what the next Scream after 4 would be and make it a reality.

From what I understand with Scream 4, the studio (Weinsteins) mandated that they add the ridiculous tacked-on hospital ending. I believe Craven originally intended the film to end with Jill surviving as the new "hero/final girl" in the eyes of the media, leaving it ambiguous as to whether or not Sydney was dead or alive in the kitchen of Kirby's house. Would have been a stronger and more unique ending, IMO.

In terms of the new Scream, one of the original trio is definitely kicking the can this time around -- most likely Dewey, if I were to guess.

Dewey seems like the easiest cut, to the point where I’m almost surprised he’s made it to the franchise’s fifth film.

For boldness sake, I say it’s either both Dewey AND Gale, or it’s Sidney.

Some interesting comments from Courteney Cox (starts around 4:05 in the video)

''This is the fifth one… it’s not Scream 5, though.” “This is Scream. The directors are incredible, they’re making it absolutely… it’s a new franchise.”

“It’s hip. It’s scary. It’s just a new Scream. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a remake, it’s just a brand new launch. I think it’s gonna be fantastic.”

Gail, Dewey and Sidney dead by the end of Act 1.

So what the hell does she mean :funny:

She means "legacy sequel", ala The Force Awakens and Creed. Have the old gang to introduce the new gang for 100 more sequels to come.

And to be fair, that's basically what Scream 4 was supposed to be. So really she means, this is Scream 4: Take 2 lol

Except why do it again? Scream 4's appeal was seemingly introducing a new generation then killing every new character off. I don't know how intentional that was exactly, but Scream 4 was kind of ahead of the curve with these resurrected franchises. It wasn't perfect, but for a franchise so self aware and clever, I'm hoping it does something fresh and not a retry. Otherwise, you run into self parody, which is contradictory to this franchise.

In a perfect world, I do wish Jill survived and was the protagonist in a new series of films. Having the killer be the new protagonist but a false one while being stalked by a new killer would have been amazing.

Without a Weinstein interference, we may get something like that.

I hope so. I'd like to see this franchise still develop its own rules too while still taking the piss out of horror movies. That's what made the franchise so appealing to begin with.

You either have to kill Sydney or do something different with her, or else, she just keep being the survivor. I liked the original amnesia idea after the fourth movie. That could have had potential.

It’s great to have the original trio back, but it really would’ve been something to end Scream 4 on the note of Sidney being dead and Jill getting away with it, then moving into Jill’s “Scream 2” of her going off to college, but as a full blown villain protagonist.

Brian Tyler would score all the points for me if he brings back Dewey's Theme from Scream 2 (which was really from Broken Arrow), as Dewey makes his reappearance.

One of those weird things where it fit Dewey better than that movie, or at least because I associate it with Dewey so much.

I'm sure ill end up watching this. But I'm really not excited for it. But hey, I could be extremely surprised.

Cannot wait for the first teaser/trailer. I wonder when they'll drop it. Can't imagine that they'll actually wait until Halloween Kills in October.

This current studio trend of holding onto trailers so tightly is starting to drive me a bit nuts. Between Scream 5, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Matrix 4, I'm dying for just a taste of all these anticipated movies of mine that are coming out MONTHS from now...

Though I can't deny, it's also fueling my anticipation.

I think a lot of this is because of the pandemic setting things back, but I agree, studios are too spoiler averse these days. They don't need to be so secretive. A premise would do. It's hard to just get excited about a title sometimes. The average moviegoer doesn't keep track of these things like we do. People will be spoiled if they choose to find them, it doesn't effect most people.

The days of seeing alot of trailers 6 months to a year early is over except for the jurassic world trailer which is only to help get people back into the theaters. Studios want you hyped and ready to go with 2 - 3 months. 6 months or more can kill hype for a film in alot of cases. Now of course there are exceptions to my statement so keep that in mind.
