A closer month between DC & Marvel; a wonder when some books ship on time, eh? DC only had 2 books in the Top 10 (worth noting as even Dark Horse has a book in the Top 10 these days), but 9 of the Top 20. The top 6 books all sold over 100k, which is good but not matching the extreme highs of the CW/DEATH OF CAP months of 2006. Still, Marvel had 7 of the Top 10 and 10 of the Top 20. And if you look at those books, they come from varied franchises, not one. ASM, X-Men, Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Avengers. DC, it is weekly crossover event book (second verse, selling worse than the first), teams with Justice in the title, Batman, and Green Lantern.
- THOR has slipped but the idea of a THOR solo selling in the Top 10 should be incredible news considering he was barely cracking the Top 50 three years ago at cancellation. The wait really built some buzz.
- Naturally, OMD will prove that Spidey fans aren't tired of crossovers and that keeping ASM in that mode for almost 3 years pays off. Me? I'm dreading the end of a marriage, Joe Q channelling McFarlane on art, and yet another Cosmic Tween Brat. A second Layla Miller, only without PAD to ride to the rescue yet.
- AVENGERS: INITIATIVE is still finding it's level without crossovers, but still hanging tough in the Top 20, an incredible achievement for Slott.
- NEW AVENGERS, despite long-term mediocrity, is still the best selling ongoing title. Least The Hood bit is gaining steam.
- After 2.5 years, Brubaker's CAPTAIN AMERICA, which I had the pleasure of catching up on, is STILL hanging pretty in the Top 20. Years ago, Cap was lucky if he was near the Top 35 in a solo. This is a great effort from Brubaker.
- Despite lateness and zero buzz, ULTIMATE POWER continues to outsell every Ultimate Book except for USM. Why? My guess is that it, like USM, still has an A-List creative team. Regardless of effort or quality, Ult. XM and UFF have B list creative talent and the sales are showcasing that. Ult. XM is holding steady, but UFF's sales are dwindling at an embarassing rate for an Ultimate book, barely holding onto the Top 50. Marvel needs to reassess the line, and badly. Oddly enough, I think Carey's UFF run has been much, much, MUCH better than Kirkman on Ult. XM, although it, sadly, is Kirkman's best selling title. Once again, built in fan audiences (like me) seem to trump quality, like INVINCIBLE, which should be #1.
- BOOSTER GOLD #2 nearly slipped out of the Top 50 and may have a struggle to remain above BLUE BEETLE before a year is through.
- PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL remains Fraction's best title and has held steady in the Top 40-45 for a while now.
- IMMORTAL IRON FIST remains steady at 33-34k, and has been selling at that clip for at least the past 3-5 issues. The annual sold at 32k, which isn't bad for an annual.
- MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS debuted at #54 with 38k sales, and that doesn't spell good things for the long term. Regardless of story quality (I liked it), the premise is shakey and the page count per month means it will take a year to get through a 3 issue storyline. It was always going to be a tough sell, so I am not surprised. For what it is, I enjoyed the launch, but expect it to bow out at #12, like poor IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN. Sniffle.
- GHOST RIDER is a shell of itself, slipping some 10 or so slots in the last few months without WWH, but isn't near danger zone yet and should see a 24th issue. NOVA is also holding steady with modest sales, the strongest of the ANNIHILATION books.
- THE ORDER #3 has slipped to the Top 70 and 33k sales. Not as bad a drop as that #2 was, but at this rate it may have an uphill battle to survive past issue #12. I like the book and hope it can manage to stick it out like RUNAWAYS did. It is an entertaining book making good use of the Initiative and has new characters. Plus, I'd like to see Fraction succeed beyond Punisher and being Brubaker's sidekick.
- The fact that PENANCE's debut in a mini outsold ALL of the Annihilation mini's is a shame. I can't believe over 30k issues were ordered for shops. What a waste. It is like fans got a Dirty Sanchez from Jenkins and expect better then next time with this character. Poor Emoball.
- X-MEN: FIRST CLASS vol. 2 is tanking for direct market sales, but still outsold the last issue of ANT-MAN and sadly, THE LONERS, which would be my favorite ongoing if it was an ongoing. Sniffle.
