Shane Black Directing Predator Sequel! - Part 1

This looks much better than the first trailer (and TV spot).

I'm in! Gonna do a Predator marathon shortly beforehand (Predator 1&2 and Predators only, not the AvP shlocks) as I haven't seen them in years.

I personally love AVP so I will always watch that when I marathon. But AVPR is just too hard to watch, especially the lighting. Can’t see anything.

Now there's a trailer.

Man the Predator scream/howl has to be among the greatest sound effects in movie history, too. Always so great to hear.

AVP:R is hot garbage.

Think most people would agree on that. Don't get VFX hacks to direct movies, is the lesson, unless they're a special case and have some actual vision.

I don't agree with that. Successful directors come from all fields of the filmmaking process. James Cameron started in SFX. But, maybe don't give them AVP:R as their 1st movie! :o

James Cameron is pretty obviously one of those aforementioned special cases, wouldn't you say? :oldrazz:

Generally speaking, guys running digital effects houses aren't guys you want to throw a mid-budget big studio movie at and hope for the best. Not unless they've done some particularly impressive indies beforehand or something to make you think they understand narrative too.

Like...John Knoll over at ILM works wonders. He's a million times the effects-whiz the Strause Brothers are. I wouldn't have any faith whatsoever in him directing a Star Wars movie, no matter that he pitched the cool broad general idea for Rogue One.

There's gotta be something else there on top of just "I know my way around post-production". Cameron pretty obviously doesn't fit in that same mould, that guy was writing and pitching his own stuff and winning people over with the substance - he didn't get the Terminator gig based on effects knowledge in a vacuum, or even likely at all. It was the idea, the concept, the script or script treatment he was presenting.

EDIT: What's with that shot in the trailer about 1.57? The pred has a really light/fair complexion there, looks a little odd. Doubt it's a human guy who's hijacked a dead pred's gear, the body still looks way too big for human (though I guess there's not much to reference it to in the shot), but came off a little odd to me upon pausing it, mostly the neck area.

It's probably just a more albino-lookin' MFer than the ones we've seen before though. The individual predators usually do have different traits from movie to movie.

Only thing I like about it is the look of the Predator. ''Wolf'' I believe he is known as.

Easily one of my favorite designs.

Tim Miller's another notable example, of a VFX artist who had a successful transition into feature film directing.

The Predators in the first AVP looked like garbage.

Wolf was indeed awesome. He made up for the awful looking *****fied Predators from the first AvP.

Watched the Red Band trailer for this yesterday and I’ve done a 180. Based on that trailer the film looks great. It captured the feel of the Predator movies for sure and the cinematography looked much better. Whoever cut those first two trailers together did a terrible job.

"Somebody gets thrown into a chopper, and I think somebody loses a head..." :woot:

"Will Traeger" is somehow such a classic cheesy 80s-action-movie name, too. :mnm:

That BTS video got me more hyped than the traliers. I have faith Shane Black can delievery. The BTS video did a better job of giving us a glimpse into the tone of the film.

Yeah it’s pretty difficult for me to justify watching it during a marathon or anything. But hey if some actually enjoy it more power to them. I like the idea of the Predalien and all that though. The ending of AVP had me really ready for a fun sequel.

Yeah that design was awesome.

Watched a recent youtube video, that goes into the backstory of the Flintlock that was handed to Danny Glover's character in Predator 2. Apparently they played around with the idea of setting a Predator Movie in the past, but could never figure out how to make it work. So all the ideas we as fans ever had, were considered, but they are too inept to make a movie about a nightmarish creature, that hunts men for sport and can only be defeated through ingenuity. So instead we got the AvP Movies and a rehash of Predator 1.

Anyway, the reason I am mentioning that video, is because in the latter half of the video, he talks about the leaked script that people found a year ago, and assumed was fake because it read like some terrible fan fiction. The only problem is that all the bits with the kid were unfortunately confirmed in the Trailers. There might have been some changes though. For example, in the leaked script, the kid would [BLACKOUT]actually fly the Predator spacecraft at some point in the Movie.[/BLACKOUT] From what I heard, that won't make it into the Movie. Thank god.

The large Predator in the Movie is called Upgrade. He basically has [BLACKOUT]Wolf's role from AvP:Requiem. But instead of being a cleaner, he's an assassin. And his job is to hunt down dissident Predators.[/BLACKOUT] Remember the leaked images of Predators alongside the protagonists in the Tank? [BLACKOUT]Those are Predators that are actually working with the humans and are hiding in Area 52.[/BLACKOUT] Also there are [BLACKOUT]Predator hybrids in the script, that are released by Upgrade. Among them a three-legged Predator, Spider Predator and Predator Dog.[/BLACKOUT] With any luck, none of this will actually make it into the Movie, but I wouldn't be surprised if it stays in.

I really want to get a good Predator Movie, but depending how much of the original script stays intact, this might be the Prometheus/Covenant of the Predator franchise.

I'll buy that [BLACKOUT]Gremlins 2[/BLACKOUT]: Predator Edition

That's baaaad.

This info's sound so so bad. And it's not like I had even slight interest in this move after first trailer. Now I just feel sad about franchise in general. Maybe it's time again to watch Predator once again.

I think maybe it is true because their mega Predator is ridiculous enough that they are hiding something even more ridiculous we did not see in the trailer.

is Olivia Munn wearing fake prosthetic lips from WETA? :)

While the concept of a giant Hulk-y Predator doesn't sit well with me, if this is true I do like that he's seemingly "legit", an enforcer and part of the actual society/culture, rather than just some rogue who experimented on himself and went all bestial-savage-guy.

Much better.

Not 100% sure I buy it, especially given the predators on the tank in the set pics kind of came off as pure behind-the-scenes shenanigans to me rather than an actual plot point. But obviously we don't know either way.

A predator or two co-operating with/teaching humans in an Area 51 type of facility does somehow seem very "Shane" though, I could see him doing something like that. It'd fit with the "expanding of the concept" stuff he was talking about in the early days on this, sort of turning expecations on their head.

Yeah, think I'm on board with that if true. The big-ass pred is the "good guy", a sort of bigger/faster/genetically-enhanced "predator's Captain America super-soldier" type of thing, out there going all Judge Dredd on a couple of predators who've turned their backs on the society/clan or whatever. Could be cool.

Not loving the "hybrids" thing though. But it's not really any worse than the dogs/birds last time in Predators. Whatever.
