Shane Black Directing Predator Sequel! - Part 2

It’s a decent popcorn flick, at best. I was pretty much entertained but there’s definitely too much humor due to actors ad-libs being kept in.

The “thumbs up” gag may be the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen.

But it's all bullcrap. Those numbers won't tell you whether you will or not enjoy the film at all!
Nothing can tell you whether you will enjoy a film before you see it though. You really have it confused. The reviewers are just a bunch of people who regularly see films before we do, otherwise they wouldn’t matter at all. In addition, unlike the company promoting their own film they don’t always have a 100% bias in trying to make that film look good regardless of whether it is, showing the best bits while hiding anything bad. When a bunch of guys on the Hype see a film before I do their opinions count more than reviewers to me as they are more likely to have similar views to me, but even then it’s just an indication and can turn out to be completely wrong. That said I’d be very surprised if your views (or anyone’s views) didn’t correlate with the Tomatometer more than 50% of the time. My views are very different to it on a number of occasions but that is the nature of any real world correlation which isn’t near perfect correlation.

Your views might be skewed by focusing on high profile controversial outliers which will always exist in any statistical process. The entire body of CBMs for eg is a small sub sector of the population of films and too small to be representative of RT on films in general. Do you disagree with the Tomatometer on the likes of the Nolan trilogy, Logan, Deadpool, Green Lantern or Catwoman?

Commute yesterday was long (took 2hrs to get home), so I missed seeing what I wanted to see yesterday and saw this instead. I have been collecting my thoughts about it overnight. This was not AvP:R bad. Not in the least. This looked like a real movie and not some Sci-Fi original trash. So it immediately was better for that reason.

That said, this movie is almost not a Predator movie tonally. This was very similar to IM3 in tone, which is not necessarily bad in general but for this franchise I don't think it worked. Predator was always an action series with elements of horror. This was like...Lethal Weapon with a creature. They didn't bother to do any horror elements in the film. Big mistake. I don't want all the movies to be the same, but even when James Cameron completely changed tone from Alien to Aliens, it still retained horror elements and felt like an extension of that universe. This had the same creature/species no doubt, but it felt like it didn't belong. The overall plot and such I thought was a fine direction to take for the Predator (as in what the Predator are doing in the movie), but the tone here was not in the same ballpark at all.

Some of the dialogue was funny and other bits were painful and directionless. I could feel the improve. One scene in particular I was rolling my eyes and thinking to myself "Move on PLEASE!!!" Some elements of the story were fine, but other ones are awful. The ending people are referencing in here...yeah...it was the worst moment in the movie, which for the very end of the movie is the WORST place to do something like that. Having your worst moment in the beginning or middle means you can still recover. At the very end, you can't. Honestly, I would say excluding the AvP movies, worst of the sequels. Both Predator 2 and Predators were better. This was very disappointing. Probably a 2 out of 5 type movie. Really cannot say I recommend it.

Shane's first stinker.
Ugh... Why on earth would it

Include the dreadlocks? what are those? weren't they part of the predators body? what do they do? is it ever explained?
Camouflage.

I am all for doing your own thing, but Black here seems to have missed the entire point of what a Predator movie was supposed to be. Instead of making a Predator movie with his sensibilities, he made a movie with his sensibilities and slapped a Predator in there. It just didn't work for me overall.

This may dip into the 20s at this rate.

That's pretty disappointing, as I had more trust in this being consistently higher than rotten with the rest of his work cause of the name associated to it.

Based on word of mouth it sounds like a real stinker.

I can find enjoyment in AvP:R, so I guess I can find some enjoyment in The Predator, as long as the action is decent. But man, why is it so difficult to make an actual good Predator Movie? Predator 1 was a masterpiece. Predator 2 was good, but not as great as the first Movie. It's gone downhill ever since. The other Movies, including the AvP cross-overs, have been mediocre to downright awful.

They cannot figure out how to expand the lure and make something that is either not a rehash or just stupid in the process. It shouldn't be hard though, I agree.

I don't care about being spoiled for this movie...
Any particular reason why he's helping the humans?

Absolutely no reason is given. There is suggestion that humans are an endangered species and that's why but it's never really said. Not to mention the Predator trying to save humanity is still pretty much killing anyone it can find. It's all ridiculous garbage nonsense. Just like Olivia Munn's performance, the kid and pretty much everyone else in this giant flaming turd.

I truly believe Shane Black has secretly loathed and hated Predator for the last 30 years and really just wanted to destroy this series for good.

He doesn't know how to shoot the creatures either.

Ya know what I would have loved to see? 3 Predators trying to take on the upgrade. As much as I disliked the idea of friendly Predators in the script, it would have made for an awesome action piece, provided they had extended their roles. In the leaked script, all of the regular Predators get offed fairly quick. But I would have kept them around until the final act, and have the 3 Predators working together to fight upgrade. Kind of a reversal of Predators, where you had the 3 Super Predators and one regular Predator, now it'd be 3 normal Predators trying to defeat the Super Predator. Stalking him and using their hunting tactics against the Upgrade, only to get picked off one by one, but doing enough damage to him so the humans have a fighting chance.

But that means we have to endure the stupidity of Predators upgrading themselves. Doesn't sound very honorable.

The dreads are actually tech the predators use, it's not something they grow, a character yells out what they do while they are running away from the space dogs but I couldn't catch what it was.

based on the response here, surprise surprise I had an absolute blast with this movie! First and foremost Shane Black wrote a renegade army comedy and then dropped a predator in it and I thought it was historical. I pretty much laughed at all the scenes, Keegan Michael key and Thomas Jane absolutely stole this movie for me. All there interactions with each other had me rolling and the hotel scene when Munn wakes up was a high mark of the camaraderie of the group in this film.

The movie is at it's best when the group is together just conversing and talking to each other but the weakest part is the predator stuff. I didn't like that they basically made the predator bullet proof taking any tension away from the final act of the film which was easily the worst section of this film. Once the comedy stopped and the action kicked into high gear the movie lost it's edge for me. Still really liked it though.

This I don't buy. You don't work on a movie for years of your life just to stick it to a franchise you hate. This just sounds like fanboy anger boiling to the surface. I think Black was definitely making a movie he thought was good. It just turned out wrong for the property he was working on. It happens.
