Shane Black Directing Predator Sequel!

Predator 2 is the goods. I love it. In fact I consider Predators underrated as well.

I agree. While I still think the first Predator is far superior, Predator 2 is a very good sequel considering the fact that the whole mystery of what was hunting them was lost by the existence of the first movie (it was actually a big part of what makes the first film so good, not knowing exactly what was hunting Arnold's team).

Predators was an okay movie. While I maintain that it has its problems (the whole game preserve planet concept, the fact that three uber predators couldn't defeat a ragtag band of soldiers, criminals, etc, when it only took one regular predator to take out entire teams of highly trained experts in the first two movies, etc) it was still quite entertaining and certainly a step in the right direction after the abominable AVP movies.

Any more news on this?

I'm generally not a fan of reboots, but much like the Terminator franchise, I feel the Predator franchise has been marred somewhat by poor quality sequels and maybe starting from scratch is the way to go.

And I know he's been flavour of the month for some years now, but The Rock playing a Dutch-type role - I could buy. Like Arnie in the 80s, he has the build and enough screen presence and charm to carry it off.

I don't think the Predator movies need to be rebooted necessarily, but I would prefer a prequel to another lackluster sequel (though Predator 2 and Predators are about as good as any sequel has a right to be). Instead of constantly putting Predators in the present or future, set the movie in the past. There are plenty of periods in history where you could drop a Predator into the story and have a great movie.

Predator vs US & Japanese troops in WWII.

Predator vs Spartans

Predator vs US Cavalry & Apache Indians in the Wild West

Predator vs Vikings

Predator vs Samurai and/or Ninja

The list can go on and on. The Predator could also be the basis of various monster legends. For instance, Predator vs Vikings could be the genesis of the story of Beowulf and Grendel. Predator vs Spartans could be the genesis of the legend of Theseus and The Minotaur. Predator vs Apache/Cavalry could be the genesis of the legend of the sasquatch. All sorts of monster legends could be attributed to Predators coming to Earth throughout history and going on safari.

Shane Black is busy with post production on The Nice Guys and getting his upcoming TV show The Edge started.

As for rebooting from scratch? Why? Predator, Predator 2 and Predators all stand on their own independently of each other. Shane Black's will too.

In regards to a pending sequel: Literally!!! :sly:

Good article. Looks like the new Predator movie will be much like Predator 2 & Predators. It may reference the events of the first movie, possibly even the first sequel, but essentially it will be a stand alone movie. That's the way I would want to see it be made, if it's not a prequel.

But I would still love to see a prequel set in a previous time. Like what I had posted previously. Any of those suggestions would be awesome.

Can't believe that articles already a year old and we're no further along :csad:

(Co-writer) Fred Dekker is continuously posting updates on Facebook. They're working on it.

Right now they're shooting a TV pilot for a Western TV show called Edge.

I had to laugh when I read their team name, "Black & Dekker". I thought "My mom has an electric crepe maker from those guys."

I really want to see a continuation with Adrien Brody's character...or a new story involving Dutch. Now that would be dope.

I'm wondering if Fox is gonna wait and see how Blomkamp's new Alien film does before going through with Black's Predator.

A continuation of Adrien Brody's character would mean more of the game preserve planet. I've already pointed out the weakness of that story line with Predators. Making another movie with the same weakness doesn't make much sense.

As for a new story involving Dutch? Maybe as a minor character, like the head of a Predator hunting task force. But putting him in the thick of things again, like in the original? I don't know about that. As much as I love Arnie, I just don't know if he can still manage that kind of physicality.

Thanks for that tip, dude. Every week I've been googling Black to see if there's any news on his projects and rarely get anything.

For anyone wondering, Dekkers recent updates for Edge:
June 1 - Pre-production has begun...

July 21 - Off to New Mexico to start our western television pilot, "EDGE", based on the books by George G. Gilman. More info to come (including casting) as soon as the studio gives the high sign. Buckle up!

So yeah, Black is busy right now, shooting Edge, then probably back to post-production on The Nice Guys (I think he could fit Edge in since he has until next May to finish TNG, unless he's fininshed that already, but I doubt it).

We don't even know which project Black is doing next, Predator, Doc Savage or The Destroyer. All I know is I'll be there opening weekend for all of 'em.

“Shane shot a movie and he’s doing a pilot now, but I’ve read a lot of his script and I think it’s genius. I think it’s genius and I think it’s entertaining, and what it did is recreate a famous franchise in a different, interesting way; looking at it from a different light. He’s just an amazing writer-director. He’s got a way of looking at this that makes you excited again. I love this franchise. It was the first movie I ever did. I remember in being in the jungle with Arnold [Schwarzenegger] as a 28-year-old and going, ‘This is a fun business!’…Shane’s amazing. He’s an amazing storyteller.”

“Shane’s got a writing partner, Fred Dekker. They’ve been doing it together and Fred’s great. The two of them together, they’ve been in the business for a long time, but the writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’ I mean he’s the guy who wrote Iron Man 3.”

It's starting to sound like it's not going to be another "10 Little Indians" type story.

Not holding my breath. Shane Black is talented as hell, but he seems to develop a lot of projects that never get made...sorta like Guillermo del Toro :(

I think it needs to be pointed out that Black was actively trying to get things made since KKBB in '05, but couldn't. The success of IM3 changed that. He now has some clout, TNG will be out 3 years after IM3, he's currently filming Edge, his stuff is getting made now.

Predator twist : it is not an alien but really a guy in a suit played by JCVD and said suit was given to him at Christmas, the circle is now complete.

I'm struggling to think where else they can take this franchise. The first one was the best and after that downhil and the AVP spin offs are an abomination.

I´d like to know if Arnie will be back.
