^ :hehe:

Well, at least that will give Black more freedom to write his own new canon without getting entangled in years of "expanded universe" fluff, lol.
The EU had some really great stories in it that got removed when Disney chucked it all.

Thrawn would have been a perfect villian but they instead gave us Snoke and Darth Rage-fit instead.

It was not my intention to dismiss the SWEU, since I have very little familiarity with it. And yeah, I didn't like Snoke either. Such a waste of a great actor. Even I could've played that silly CGI puppet.

Still, I think the filmmakers being able to create their own stories without having to force-feed themselves years of alternative canon is indeed a good thing, doesn't matter the quality of said canon.

Good. People like Rage Fit.

Snoke and Kylo might yet turn out to be better characters. We haven't seen much of Snoke to know how good or bad he will be. He was just there like Sidious was for most of the OT. Kylo had some major rage issues and while it was comical at times he isn't a bad character. It's just neither is as good as the potential Thrawn had as a villian.

Thrawn was the total opposite. He is a cold, calculating and highly intelligent Admiral in the Imperial Remnant and was a tactical genius. He could have ruled the galaxy if he set himself to it. I just can't see that with Kylo Ren. Snoke as I said is too vague to judge his effectiveness.

Anyways, on the topic of the movie I wouldn't mind seeing something of the Predator homeworld and society. The most we ever got was a very brief maybe city and of the "Wolf" Predator being dispatched to clean up the mess of AVP2.

Well if they have spaceships, they must be a pretty advanced society. An advanced society of brutal headhunters, but still. :o

Do these guys only target other species, or do they kill each other too? Because a society comprised of members constantly trying to cut off everybody else's head ain't gonna last long, lol.

The comic books as well as novels allude to a kind of advanced yet primitive society that prides itself on hunting prowess in killing dangerous game (humans, xenomorphs, the space jockey race, etc.) and their females are larger, more aggressive but seemingly uninterested in hunting.

There really isn't a lot there because Fox wanted to keep the canon such as it was open for the movies to explore. Which they never did anything with besides run into the ground full force with the AVP movies.

At least Predators gave us a little more glimpse with the theory there are at least two subspecies or tribes of the Predator race and a rivalry fierce enough they kill one another.

Fox took what could have been the mashup of two franchises and sunk it. I hope whatever Shane Black cooks up helps revive the Predator half of the franchise better than what Scott has done so far in the Alien one.

Good. People like Rage Fit.

But nobody likes Snoke, so it evens out.

Anyway best thing about Predator is they never gave diddly squat about EU. Predator 2 already contradicted the comics by that point lol.

What's wrong with "The Predator"?

Well it's not terrible I guess, but it feels really unoriginal just slapping a "The" on it, especially since the first movie was called simply "Predator". And it doesn't seem like a title that'd attract fans of the franchise (or new fans for that matter either). Something more along the lines of "Predator: Samurai War" or "Predator: Viking War" might've been cooler (just as an example, not that I'm suggesting those titles since we know nothing about the movie yet).

I like how blunt the franchise is with it's titles. No need for unecessary subtitles.

A nice and clean title is always great IMO. "The Predator" sounds so much better than "Predator: The Quest For Peace" or something like that. :D

Well IMO, Predator 3 or 4 could also work since there was a Predator 2. ;)

btw, :funny: @ the above

I think the reason they stay away from numbers is because Predator was in 87 and Predator 2 was when, early 90s? (I've only seen it twice, don't remember which year exactly). Then you have the "failed" attempt to already reboot the franchise in 2010. So then you gotta decide which movies to follow and which you are gonna ignore (like Predators, and the AvP films) so you will either get Predator 3, or Predator 4.

But I think the main thing is that a lot of people would be put off by the title if it had a number and they would say "oh, so I need to watch the other X films before this one". A lot of people have seen the original since it's a classic, but there's also a lot of people who haven't. And the drop off to people who have actually seen Predator 2 is probably quite big. I didn't mind it, but it was more of a B-movie and it has nowhere near the same status.

Just calling it "The Predator", throwing in some clues/references that us oldschool fans will recognize, but ultimately craft a movie that will work for people who haven't seen any Predator-stuff before. For example, having Arnold in the movie and saying "this guy fought a predator before" works for both people familiar with the original, but if you're a new viewer you can still go right into the new one.

Well, if both this and Scott's next Alien movie are successful, they could always give the crossover another attempt.

If they do I hope this time it is an established director who will treat the material with more respect than the previous three did with AVP and AVP Requiem.

The Predator Exclusive: Shane Black Talks R-Rating and More
The Nice Guys director tells us a little about what to expect from the next Predator movie, and offers a Doc Savage update, too.
Edward Douglas said:
Back in 1987, John McTiernan’s Predator helped to solidify Arnold Schwarzenegger’s status as an action star while introducing moviegoers to a new form of science fiction movie monster. A few months earlier, screenwriter Shane Black got his first big break in Hollywood when his script for Lethal Weapon was turned into a hit action-comedy for Mel Gibson. Six years later, Black would write Last Action Hero for Schwarzenegger.

Whether it’s coincidence or whether it’s fate, Shane Black (who co-wrote and directed Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3) is now in development on a new movie based on the beloved classic called The Predator, and when Den of Geek spoke to him about his new movie The Nice Guys, starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, we got an update and a little more information about it.

“That will have some elements of this (The Nice Guys) and some of Iron Man,” he told us. “Hopefully it will be a mixture where it’s an odd adventure, there’s a noir to it, but we’re trying to event-ize the Predator and make it new and fresh again.”

They have a script they like in place, but they still have to go through the casting process with hopes to start in November but possibly even starting sooner if they get the cast that Black wants. “We’re rolling and we’re ready to do this and I’m getting more excited day by day,” he said.

Considering that Black hopes to turn The Predator into more of an event movie, as opposed to genre or cult, we asked whether there was some mandate by Fox to make it PG-13 (like 2004’s Alien vs. Predator) or whether the studio is more open to an R-rating after the success of Deadpool, Black responded, “It’s an odd thing. Whether Deadpool helped is an open question, but I suspect it did. I made a condition of my participation with Predator that it be the same rating as the first movie, and the first movie was Rated R. In other words, I don’t want to cut away every time the Predator does something violent. I was watching the American version of The Grudge, which was PG-13, and I remember being so frustrated by the fact that everything that was scary in the Japanese version, they had to cut away from in the PG-13 American version.”

“There’s also a sensibility and a sense of brooding menace and we can have fun but there’s an element of horror that’s unmistakable in The Predator,” he continued. “I don’t want to have to compromise it by just treating it like a popcorn film. That said, I hope there’s some popcorn viewing available in it, too. It’s an R-rated popcorn movie, which is the best kind to me.”

Possibly a harder sell but just as exciting is Black’s long-time plans to revive the old pulp hero Doc Savage, which he also gave us an update on during our interview.

“Look, I think we have a fun script. I’m dearly in love with it," he told us. "The thing it has going for it is the passionate remembrance and the clarity in my mind as to what this thing should be, what it ought to achieve. We need a lead character and we’ve been pursuing a guy who says he’s very interested in doing it, he’d like to do it, and that’s this guy Dwayne Johnson. I think he’d play a terrific Doc. Here’s the problem. He’s really busy, so before I got to him, he’s got three movies lined up, so the fact that we had to wait is effectively what got me doing The Predator, cause I would have liked to do Doc but then that came along and I said, ‘Sure, great, good timing because we’re waiting for Dwayne Johnson to stop doing movies so we can get him for our movie, and hopefully that will be the next one.”

I really like Shane Black, but a lot like with Terminator franchise, sometimes I think things are better left alone.

Still can't wait to see his take, If this fails again then yeah leave it alone for good

Hmm, now I'm kinda nervous about the predator's look, in every film it's been pretty much the same overall look with slight design changes and I love that look so I hope he doesn't do anything too different and unrecognizable

Honestly, I have no idea what Black is talking about. When you get right down to it, how is what he's talking about different than what any of the other filmmakers do with the Predator design?

you have 3 options.
-a remake where everything looks and feels the same.
-a movie that is like the AvP movies. looks the same but bigger ...with bad direction and writting.
-a different unique take on it.

with Shane Black i take the third option. i know that i would love a predator movie set in the jungle with Schwarzenegger ... Force Awakens style. but it would be sooooo safe. we need to stop with safe movies.

I love how blasse Shane is. "I don't care what color it is, or what the weapons do, I just want to tell my story".

My favorite Predator design is the one from Predator 2. I hope it's like that.
