Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings General Discussion and Speculation thread

It just occurred to me, who trained Shang Chi? I don’t think I recall every seeing who trained him or where?

I'd like Jackie Chan to star in this movie and be the one who trains him, even if he's an invented character.

IIRC, in the comics, Shang-Chi never had especially notable trainers. He learned some stuff from his dad ( whichever iteration ) presumably, but otherwise it was no-name generic gurus and senseis. Its part of why I generally view him as possessing the most raw talent of the superhuman kung fu set in Marvel. He may "only" have achieved Spider-man level physicality via his mystic martial arts, but he did so without any truly exotic teachers or styles. Everyone who is actually better or more overtly fantastic was taught by the Chaste, or the Priests of Pama, or one of the Capital Cities of Heaven.

Heck no to Brie Larson or Captain Marvel in Shang Chi. Why does he need someone to help him out? Do they still think Asian movies or actors can't stand on their own two feet but need someone else to give them a hand?

Yeah thats not gonna happen. Thats only Cretton trying to answer political correctly.

Regarding the recent happenings between the NBA and China, will be very interesting to see how Marvel Studios treads the line for this movie, especially regarding the Mandarin and with Shang-Chi being Asian American (thus having a possible undertone of West vs East, something I've seen some of the Chinese commentators online talk about).

They've said Shang Chi will be American in the movie? Or are you talking about the actor (who is Canadian)?

Yes, they've confirmed Shang-Chi will be Asian American for the MCU.

Kevin Feige Talks About Marvel's Upcoming Martial Arts Film SHANG-CHI — GeekTyrant

When asked if Shang-Chi was a risk for the studio, he said:

“I think every movie that we do is a risk. We only want to do movies that people seem to think are risks. Doing the story of an Asian-American hero of Chinese heritage is something that is very intriguing to us. It will be really different and special.”

‘Shang-Chi’: Marvel’s First Asian Superhero Movie; Dave Callaham To Write – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios is fast-tracking Shang-Chi to be its first superhero movie tentpole franchise with an Asian protagonist. The studio has set Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham to write the screenplay, and Deadline hears Marvel is already looking at a number of Asian and Asian-American directors who want to do something as potentially monumental as was accomplished in Marvel’s first viable Best Picture candidate, Black Panther. That film tied into African and African American cultures and the sensibilities of its nearly all-black cast, with a black director in Ryan Coogler and writer in Joe Robert Cole. The goal here is to do a similar thing: introduce a new hero who blends Asian and Asian American themes, crafted by Asian and Asian American filmmakers.

I have very little doubt that because of the reliance on the foreign market to ensure billion dollar BO that Marvel will take pains to steer clear of anything that would outrage or anger the Chinese government.

Sadly.

I don't think there's alot about Shang Chi that China will find politically offensive (racial stereotypes of Fu Manchu aside); I think the fear is that Chinese audiences just won't watch the movie just because they don't give a **** about Chinese Americans. Chinese audiences would rather see Nicolas Cage bareback **** a tortoise for 90 minutes than see a movie about Chinese people born in the west.

Well, this is really sad. I rooted for Gao to be Shang-Chi. :csad:

Yes I heard about that. I thought the original story was a hoax at first but sadly not true :( he was so talented

I still thought it was a horrible idea to change the movie title name away from
" master of kung fu " to this legend of ten rings

Well I would've preferred Legend of the 10 Rings as a sequel title, and Master of Kung Fu as the title of the first film.

They are pretty clearly going for a "Raiders of the Lost Arc" vibe, so "Master of Kung Fu" wouldn't work anymore than "Indiana Jones Archaeology Professor" would work.

I think 10 Rings is a good title, because it ties it directly into the MCU. Master of Kung Fu as the first movie might lead people to intuitively see this as a Bruce Lee kind of 1970s cheesy dubbed movie. Master of Kung Fu would be a good sequel title, similar to The Dark Knight to establish the main character as being solidified in his hero position.

Still though, it's been awhile since North America had a solidly good Kung Fu flick. I mean I enjoy Into the Badlands. But I hope to blown away by whatever Marvel Studios comes up with.

Also, I hope to see a resurgence of films looking to copy this film in spectacularly bad fashion. More fodder for the Riff!

Random but maybe they’re just doing a scene or two out there. I wonder if they’re still thinking about Australia

Shang-Chi Director Reveals Why He Joined the Marvel Universe

"I grew up without a superhero to look up to. I gravitated to Spider-Man when I was a kid, primarily because he had a mask covering his face and I could imagine myself under that mask," Cretton explained. "I would love to give my son a superhero to look up to. I feel very privileged to be a part of telling that story."

Shang-Chi is an important part of Marvel's future, as it will reveal new details that were only teased in the Iron Man movies while also introducing a new hero of Chinese heritage who will have an impact on future films.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige previously spoke with IANS and revealed the company's reasoning for making Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Not hearing much about it being filmed, though it should be a wrap within the next weeks
