Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings General Discussion and Speculation thread

I can do this all day.

I can't! :o

I think they should just give shang chi his clone powers, because that could help make his action scenes stand out, and I think that the Shang chi character in the mcu will be more powerful in comparison to his comic version.

Why give him a random power up from a brief period, that has nothing to do with his theme or style whatsoever, if you are just going to take away the powers that are core to his concept and present from the very beginning?

shang chi has clone powers in the comics, yes its more of a recent development, but I think this version of shang chi will take elements from his recent comics and old comics.

Why is Shang Chi shooting in Australia?

I imagine a lot of Asian moviegoers will be sneaking in shrimp and rice crackers to eat instead of popcorn. I know I will be.

I won't be eating anything. These foods are far too salty, making you need to keep drinking to quench your thirst. But then if you keep drinking, you'll need the toilet. Tickets are expensive enough, so I don't want to have to miss out parts of the movie by going to the toilet or constantly thinking about going during the film.

That's why I never eat or drink anything. I'll eat and drink if watching at home, but not in a movie theatre.

This likely won't be a nearly 3 hour marathon that Endgame was so it should be fairly safe to eat or drink through Shang-Chi.

Even 2 hours is not good. Doesn't have to be 3 hours. If you've got to go, you've got to go.

I know in some of the other shorter films members of the audience kept getting up to go to the toilet several times. It's like they were drinking prune juice. :o

Steve Rogers once had the ability to turn into a werewolf, that didn't factor into the movies either. Its not simply a matter of "what is happening recently", its a matter of "What is core and logical for the premise of the character?" Lots of 'recent' arcs for various MCU characters were also very obviously useless for the movies, because they were either badly written or only made sense in light of a specific momentary plot need within the comics.

I don't think it's the same, captain America literally being able to have the ability to turn into werewolf. Just takes away from the uniqueness he has from the super solider serum. Plus his movies already established what he was capable of, from cap 1-3 they focused on his speed, strength and skill which work.

Shang chi being able to create clones doesn't take away from his martial arts, or him being a Master of marital arts. If done right it can actually potentially add to him, being a master of kung fu.

He can even use his clones as a form of training, maybe he takes on 3 version of himself which could be interesting, that's shang chi going against himself, but not one not two but three duplicate version that are almost the same as him.
I remember when captain marvel was first announced and there was an argument made, for why she should have her binary powers and why she shouldn't have her binary powers.

Also the Mohawk helmet, I remember there were a number of people who did not want it in live action movie. Because they thought it wouldn't translate well, same for her binary powers, and the same argument was made that her binary powers are more of a recent Developments, In comparison to when she was first created.
Now here we are and they adapted the helmet, and her binary powers.

You can have shang chi be an amazing fighter, and still able to clone himself without taking away the stakes, and we don't have enough information to go on. To suggest that shang chi being able to clone himself will take away from the story.

It's simple. Despite being based on,
shang chi is not Bruce Lee.

chi has to be unique as a character, yes the filmmakers can pay homage to Lee, but it's clear they also want to avoid outdated racist stereotypes.

So far everyone I've met who did not know that shang chi can clone himself. Were excited to a degree but once hearing that he can make clones of himself, is one a new power set in the mcu.

And two His clone powers to go along side his fighting style to help, Shang chi fighting style stand out. But hey that's me if they give him clone powers I am in, if they don't I am still in.

Howsabout splitting the difference between enhanced chi abilities and cloning powers and give movie Shang-chi the ability to create a handful of duplicates comprised of chi energy? When faced with overwhelming odds, Shang-chi can (for a short while) slough off energy beings that mirror his vast Kung-fu repertoire. So when he leaves one attacker to focus on the next, his shadow chi remains focused on villain #1. That should bump movie Shang-chi at least to the super soldier level without any messy pills or magic.

Will now I have to buy Enter the Dragon again in anticipation of this movie. Might as well go nuts and buy Game of Death and The Raid 2 while I'm at it.

Count me in the no clones camp, but I will be seeing this regardless. I love martial arts films as well as horror movies, so this and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are my most anticipated movies of the next two phases, even with Thor Love and Thunder, Black Panther 2 and the Eternals coming out.

Don't bother to buy Game of Death. You'll probably end up with the wrong version.

The one that is commercially available as a complete film is the one you want to avoid. That is so completely ridiculous and in bad taste. Bruce Lee died before he could finish the film, so the studio took it upon themselves to try to complete it without him. But they didn't do a good job at all like the Crow. Instead, you get all these doubles or clones ironically standing in for Bruce Lee dressed up in disguise to hide the fact that they aren't Bruce Lee.

And the real Bruce Lee only shows up for about 5 minutes of the actual finished film. It is mostly in poor taste as it even includes footage of his real funeral.

The Game of Death that you need to see is the incomplete version. Footage of the incomplete film was found years after the above film was finished. This is the true movie about Bruce Lee fighting on various levels of a pagoda with opponents who have different fighting skills. The completed film above is not about that at all but has an entirely different plot.

There is a 2004 DVD version of Enter the Dragon which contains an extra disc of the incomplete Game of Death. But you can watch it on YouTube yourself here:

This is pretty much the extent of the existing footage. It's been rumoured there may be more footage, but nothing has been found yet. I don't know if it would be possible to even finish this film properly, because you'd need scenes of Bruce Lee acting for part of it, and not just fighting, and I don't think he filmed that.

If he did manage to complete this film, it would've been an awesome movie. It really showcases Jeet Kune Do and has probably the best nunchaku duel ever. In none of his other movies did we ever get that.

Good looking out, DR. What about Fists of Fury and Way of the Dragon? Might buy those first since I used to own Enter the Dragon and my copy is probably at my mom's house or something.

I think you're going to get a bit confused. It's a bit of a complicated thing here. Let me explain:

The Big Boss (original title) in Hong Kong was known in the US as "Fists of Fury" with an "s".

Fist of Fury (original title) in Hong Kong (no "s") was known in the US as "The Chinese Connection".

Now rumour has it that someone in the US got them mixed up, because The Big Boss is about drug smuggling, and "The Chinese Connection" is meant to be a nod to "The French Connection" also about drugs. So "The Chinese Connection" should be the US title of the Big Boss, while "Fists of Fury" (plural) should be the US title of "Fist of Fury" (singular) and not the other way round.

Apparently they've corrected that now and use the original Hong Kong titles, but if you happen to get an older copy somehow, you might end up with the Big Boss when you're expecting to watch Fist of Fury, and vice versa.

Doesn't really matter in the end though, because I'd advise you to get the newest versions possible, as the older versions have a lot of footage cut out of it (especially all the nunchaku scenes).

I'd recommend Big Boss, Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon. I think you should get the Chinese versions with subtitles though if you can, rather than the dubbed versions, because the Bruce Lee dubbed voice doesn't sound anything like him, but they're still watchable.

All of those 3 I mentioned have some iconic fights in them. Definitely watch all of the Bruce Lee films if you can.

Just added Way of the Dragon and a The Big Boss/Fist of Fury double feature to my Amazon wishlist. It I order them and get different movies than expected I will send you quite the harshly worded PM, DR.

This is an interesting feature about Jackie Chan and how he combines action and comedy. The first point he makes is how Jackie always puts himself at a disadvantage against his opponents where he's the underdog and his enemies have the upper hand.

That highlights part of why I don't like the clone/duplicates idea. That would put Shang Chi at a major advantage against his opponents, when it's better to see him as the underdog at a disadvantage fighting his way out and triumphing over his enemies. Even in terms of pure storytelling alone, apart from martial arts, it's almost built into how we enjoy stories and like to see the hero overcome odds.

I don't think you can go wrong with that, but can't tell whether you'll get censored or uncensored versions. You have to read the description carefully and also the reviews to see if thy have all the fight scenes included.

Just checked the review averages and they're both almost 5 out of 5. I know TWOTD is in Chinese cuz a user review whined about it.
