Shazam Shazam General Discussion and Speculation - Part 2

I'd like an article about SHAZAM! being written by Clark Kent. Would be easy to do, and show the connection without being obnoxious. Plus, it would tie into Freddy's whole thing of collecting memorabilia and news clippings.

But I do also want to see Supes show up in something that shows his new personality post-JL.

Gotta admit Jett in BOF has pissed me off yet again. Said this been set in the DCEU makes it less special. I get that he doesn’t like the shared universe concept but he isn’t so against it that he’s constantly spinning the narrative about how a shared DC universe is bad because so far it’s not really been successful. The thing is if you execute it correctly it does work. Sorry needed a rant.

Don't give BOF the clicks. He's one of all of six people on the globe who are less than thrilled with the trailer.

He liked the trailer but he said that setting it in the DCEU makes it less special. I'd argue setting it within makes it more special. He just hates the shared universe.

Rant warning:

I hate this idea that DC, and many fans foment that Captain Marvel/Shazam needs Superman or worse Batman to appear and validate him, as if he's awaiting acknowledgment and their approval.
This is how DC (and fans) have been undermining the character since they acquired him, and why most reviewing the trailer start with "I don't really know or care about this character, but...".

I'm fine with the movie referencing the DC heroes and establishes it's the same U, that's great!
Although if the fans get their way, Superman and Batman and all will soon show up to say they approve of Billy/SHAZAM!, subjectively relegating Captain Marvel/Shazam! as subservient to them. While the fans applaud and squee look Superman and Batman approves! :barf:
Casting and relegated him to second-string, permanently in their shadow. It's the fans who feed into that.

The character existed for decades as the definitive champion of his own universe.
The after credit reveal shouldn't be Superman, if anyone should be Teth Adam.
And no SHAZAM! shouldn't ever need Superman and Batman to help defeat, or find the clues to defeat Adam.
That is Billy's journey.:cwink:

As far as eventually Joining JL, again this myopic vision that you don't count until you're in JL, has also relegated SHAZAM! into afterthought second tier joiner status. Which he wasn't.

If anything he was, and should be the champion of his own team.

With some updates:
A contemporary Spy Smasher
Ms. Scarlet (fem update above)
Ibis existed before Dr. Strange.
Bulletman & Bulletgirl/The Bulleteers (also updated costumes above (more Rocketeer-like))

This attitude of how does SHAZAM fit into the DCU, needs to be dropped, and the focus should be how to develop SHAZAM's U, where he is the champion. And then the DCU characters can come play.

First. I loved the trailer (unlike the one for Aquaman)! This has potential to be really big.

Second. I couldn't agree more with you! Shazam/Cap. Marvel is an amazing character, with a huge mythology to be explored, and he's more than capable to handle threats on his own; he doesn't need a "mentor". He never did. Not to mention that he, decades ago, was much, much bigger than superman was.

Of course, DC/WB could be stupid once more and treat the character like a c-lister, with all these silly "cameos". I don't think it will happen, though. There's no point in doing so: superman has been given multiple chances and failed. He just can't get his own franchise; it seems he isn't a box office draw at all and would add nothing to Shazam's movie (maybe he could end up hurting it).

Anyway, if you pay attention, the fans who so desperately want Superman as a cameo, being Billy's mentor, are Superman fanboys, afraid that the character never gets a solo again. They want to shove him into every DC movie possible so that they can have some minutes of Superman in the big screen. Shazam is the movie of their choice, for obvious reasons. :word:

As if having other heroes cameo will take the limelight away from Shazam.

Also people want Superman to cameo because of the history between the two chatacters and they actually work well together.

David Sandberg obviously agrees because he wants it aswell.

Also we all know Ultimate Thors game on these boards. As transparent as a window :whatever:

That's not true.

Not true, either. 0:2, so far. :down

And please enlighten us as to why it's not true. I'm speculating here, I'll admit. But if directors are just lining up in droves to take the helm of the next Superman film, then who are they? Because all we ever get are rumors that some big name director is being courted, and then someone asks them about it, and they deny it. Lather, rinse, repeat. It's also becoming more and more unlikely that "MOS 2" is even happening, because five years have past since the original and nothing has even gone into production.

We only get rumours because WB are still figuring stuff out. 5 years since Man of Steel yes but he’s been in two movies since. WB are currently trying to get the guy playing Superman to sign a new contract. Hiring filmmakers will come after that.

Also just FYI Vaughn expressed interest and JA Bayona wants to make a Superman film. So he’s not short of options.

In the comics, Shazam/ Captain Marvel used to be on his on earth. they fixed it, but I waited years for a Batman team-up. being in the DCEU just makes sense.

I think he has a point to an extent. It's Shazam's blockbuster debut and origin story. It should focus on him. Kind of unfair to the character when they're trying to build his own audience.

Superman/Clark Kent stopping by would be random and need some kind of explanation why he's in Fawcett City and why he cares about Billy.

Not a bad idea.

Bingo. ;)

How is it unfair to have a mid/post credit scene with another DC hero? This sort of thing happens in Comic Book movies all the, infact sometimes the MCU ones are a totally different character and unrelated to the movie they're in. If anything given this is set in the DCEU and the Easter eggs already presented it would make even more sense. Especially if rumours of setting up a showdown between Superman and Black Adam down the line are true.

I think it's overdone in Marvel and it cheapens origin movies for the main superhero. If they can do it with a reason without being forced or distracting, then I don't mind it. But inserting characters just because some fans want to see them is as annoying as seeing Batman everywhere or Wolverine in every comic. We've had plenty of Superman already.

That could happen if it's just like Wonder Woman's photo. I don't think people should expect anything more than that like a full scene with Superman in costume or anything, which they would have to pay Cavill more and would be a distraction. It could be just a moment with Clark Kent.

That is incorrect as others have said. He will get paid the same amount no matter costume. It will either be based on his contract or whatever rate he makes.

The costume is owned by WB not Cavill.

That is a cool idea. Have Clark write an article (maybe show him at the Planet) then have him fly off and say hello :) Could last a few minutes but show plenty.

Well then how do you know what's in his contract and rate? Wearing the costume means playing a bigger role. What determines his rate?

Cause he is a reporter and wants to write about a new hero showing up out of nowhere? Makes total sense...

It doesn't make sense for a Metropolis reporter to cover it. Fawcett has their own reporters who would know about Shazam first. Does Clark Kent go out to every new superhero and report about them all over the world?

Is the movie even set in Fawcett City?
I thought the Johns / Frank SHAZAM! was set in Philadelphia. And that is what the movie is primarily based on, and where it's set.

That is set by the union but most likely he and the studio would figure it out. Most liklely paid based on number of days shooting.

And no it doesnt mean he is playing a bigger role.. He could wear the costume for like 2 minutes.

I have no idea what he is contracted for but it isnt like he is going to get paid a million dollars to show up for 1-2 days work. We arent talking about Iron Man in Spiderman: Homecoming or anything we are talking about Luthor in Justice League literally one scene (maybe half as Clark half as Superman) that would last 3 minutes or so. That isnt going to count as one of his contracted appearances. (unless he had those written in which he might have but they would have included many)

I think some are confused...most of us dont want Superman in a ton of the film teaching Billy how to be a hero...that journey is for him and Freddy. Superman is there because after the fact Superman can be the adult hero who explains things further. A great comic to touch on this was Superman/Shazam First Thunder. The conclusion of which (after Supes and Shazam meet as heroes and fight together) is Superman coming to Billy to help.

He might. And who says Fawcett doesnt cover it? Maybe that is what tips him off to look into it. Lois went to Smallville looking for Superman, Batman went everywhere looking for the Metahumans. Investigators investigate.

Reporters from my local paper cover stories in other towns, states and even countries. Is it so hard to believe that wouldnt happen in the DCU?

BTW I dont want you to think I am attacking you or anything...just having a nice conversation :)

You realize that putting on the suit takes more time right? He would have to be in shape, fitting, dressing, hair styling. Playing Superman is more involved. Can't really say it would cost the same when we don't know his contract or rate.

The Wizard Shazam is the adult hero who explains things. Billy is HIS champion. It sounds like shoehorning Superman for no real reason. Superman/Shazam First Thunder was about their first meeting. It wasn't about Shazam's origin story. Why do you want to merge those stories? Just for Superman?
