Gamora's exclusion was bizarre, but the AoU merchandise was odd as well for a range of characters. The main four always appeared, but it was hit and miss whether we got Hawkeye, BW, Vision, SW or QS.
It will be interesting to see the sales figures for toys that are specifically aimed at younger males if they include female characters. At the moment there is no data and its just speculation by fans that younger girls will buy these. But other merchandise aimed at a wider audience (e.g. Funko Pops) will include a wider range of characters without a doubt which is great.
I'm pretty sure Disney, Marvel and all the manufacturers and retailers have loads of data that the general public and the media do not have access to.
Though there are reports and articles from Forbes, Bloomberg, HR and Variety discussing the explosion of Avengers merchandise and which characters sell the most. Even among the main four there's a hierarchy and a different amount and variety of merchandise because of retail patterns. Individually, Iron Man and Captain America outsell the others by a significant margin, then the Hulk and then well behind him is Thor. I'd assume though that Black Widow merchandise would be a popular seller over Hawkeye, SW, QS and The Vision though popularity can change with AOU. There was certainly more outcry over her missing from merchandise than any of those others so that property looks ripe for expanded product lines.
I think the biggest sellers for GOTG were Groot and Rocket with Peter a distant third. But Gamora merchandise should probably sell better or at worst as well as Drax so the lack of it was pretty glaring.
But we don't know what products didn't sell or were left on the shelves to be sent back to manufacturers and which ones came up short in supply for the demand. They know and as a business one would think they'd adjust accordingly.
I must admit that stereotyping is a pet hate of mine and the recent claims that all female fans want a specific product is annoying. But I do hate when a great T-shirt design is offered to guys but the ladies shirt is changed and is usually pink. Urggh!![]()
The stereotyping is annoying. I never buy ladies t-shirts because the colors are more fit for an 8 year old than a grown woman. And just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I'd only want a female character on my t-shirt. Just as I assume there are many male fans who'd love a BW, SW or Gamora T-Shirt.
