Hi everyone, I was just wondering if the "realism" in this movie series should be atken down a notch. You see, the other day a friend and I got into a debate about what the Riddler's look should be. I wanted the man to have black slacks, a green blazer, and a question mark lapel pin but that would be too "supervillain" for Nolan's films. Also, there's the thing about making the villains "realistic". I've heard a suggestion about Mr. Freeze locking people in a meat locker, which takes away a good amount of appeal to the charcater in my opinion. By the looks of it Batman himself is too unrealistic for these films (a man dresses up as a giant bat and fights criminals...come on). So what do you guys think? How realistic can we go before it becomes too realistic? Can it become too realistic?

It can get too realistic. There's a distinct danger when dealing with the fantastic, such as Batman and his world, that realism can cause you to lose what is so great about it in the first place. Nolan's gotten close, but he has yet to cross that line just yet.

I dont think you're sure what the word 'realism' means. Not in the terms of what we're talking about it having in the Batman movies. There's nothing unrealistic about Batman or Riddler's look.

Sorry, I guess I misstated what I meant. With Batman I was being sarcastic about him not being realistic, and with Riddler the whole "supervillain" comment came from the other party that I was debating with.

The way I see it, Nolan is 2/2 directing his Batman films via realism. There's no reason to screw with what is clearly working. If somebody wants a fantasy-based interpretation of the character they can watch the first four films.

A secret ninja organization that has been manipulating civilization for thousands of years, a man who dresses like a clown and has near omnipotence when it comes to crime, and a guy walking around with half his face blown off and not dying from infection are hardly realistic.

No, leave it be. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Yes it is pretty idiotic to make a third movie and suddenly turn it to a fantasy.

Very true, I agree with you. I wasn't saying to turn it into a full blown fantasy like *shudders* Schumacher's vision. Just to somewhat broaden the scope as to what villians to use as people keep trying to mold different villains to try to get them to fit in... For example, most people I know would want Riddler to be a Jigsaw rip off (I think Joker stole half Nygma's act in TDK) instead of pulling a variety of crimes. I feel if you need to make too many changes to a villain to try to get them to fit in to this "realistic" universe, you might as well not use them at all.

It's fine. I'm pretty sure Nolan could make any villian work in a realistic setting without changing too much of what makes the character so great.

in the words of the great Han Solo, "Didn't we just leave this party?"

I thought the Dark Knight was a little out there... with the bike coming out of the tank and the half-Mummy-faced Harvey... the elaborate staged assassination, etc...

Nolan's films showcase a sense of realism in an obviously non-realistic world...

Seems fine to me...

I watched Batman fall off a Penthouse, catch a girl and then land on the car with no one suffering injury.

I watched a man get burned on his face to the point of bone being visible and walk around with no problem and no infection.

I watched Batman use Sonar to recon an entire building.

I have seen machines that vaporize water supplies being used to spread toxins in a city.

I am waiting for this whole Realism-schtick.

No, I love the realism for these films. They are perfect. Im so used to seeing scifi and very unrealistic things in superhero films (ala Spider-man, X-men, Hulk, etc) so its nice to see a superhero film that is very beleivable and makes you go "Hmmm...that can actually happen in real life".

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.

Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.

I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tannhäuser Gate.

All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain.

Time to die.

I watched the glee while your kings and queens fought for
ten decades for the Gods they made

I shouted out "who killed the Kennedy's?" when after all it was you and me
