Should they make another Punisher movie?

Honestly I have never read a Punisher comic but I think this is how they should make Punisher...
It should be called Punisher MAX I was originally thinking Frank Castle|Punisher, but Punisher MAX rolls off the tongue better

  • Move his army origins from Nam to the Gulf War. (It'd be cool to see an animated DTV based on his time in the Gulf. Kind of like Born, just set in the Gulf). Also maybe have him do a tour in Afghanistan and Iraq.
  • I think they should have to portray in Frank as a genius of different era's military strategies such as guerrilla tactics and as a pro with various hand to hand combat. I just remember in Punisher 04 all his abilities seemed to spring out of no where. One minute hes a normal cop, he takes more shots than 50 Cent, and then comes back as Rambo.
  • Have the beginning of the non flashback side of the story involve Frank coming back after a tour in Iraq or Afghanistan to a promotion that he had waiting before he left
  • In his new unit Frank sees corruption, wants to do the right thing so he reports to the higher ups. Of course this doesnt end well
  • A shootout, involving some of the corrupt cops that Frank snitched on, breaks out while Frank and his family walk through Central Park at night...I tried to combine the Ultimate and 616 origin because I like them both equally. Sadly thats the best I could come up with
  • Needless to say Frank's family are killed, Frank is injured. So sets in the rest of the story. Frank sets out to wipe corrupt cops, mobsters, etc.

------------------------------

  • Apparently one of the writers of the Emmy winning show The Shield, Kurt Setter, had a dark, gritty, "real" drama. Except the studio wanted to go with a more comic book feel...Yeah bring Sutter or someone of that caliber to the project
  • The new Punisher could technically be in the Marvel cinematic universe, I dont wanna see Iron Man flying around and teaming up with Frank, but I wouldnt mind seeing a brief scene where cops mention Iron Man, Cap, or the others
  • Set it in NYC. End of story.
  • Have Microchip be a reformed hacker, now working with the NYPD and is friends with Frank. Similar to John Salley's brief role in Bad Boys II. Make him comical, but not a buffoon. Have him be good with guns and have his nephew being killed a while back another reason why he joins Frank
  • Have it be violent and R rated but not a tame R rating like 04 and not overly gut wrenching slasher movie like WZ. Violence wise I think Bad Boys II is a good example. Sure it has it brutal parts, but it never was gut wrenching gory like WZ
  • Have the main villains be the Gnucci Crime Family
  • Get a good, serious, crime director. I think Wayne Cramer (Crossing OVer, Running Scared) or Antoine Furqua (Training Day, Brooklyn's Finest) could be good or maybe for a more experienced director maybe Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Che)

He was not a cop in the movie. He was an FBI agent and prior to that a soldier in the Gulf war.

Cop, FBI agent, whatever I'm just saying it seems that he pulls all of his skills out of nowhere

In the animated Kuwait scene on the director's cut he does a pretty crazy charge under fire and takes out like 8 or 9 guys. Would have been nice if they'd have had the money to film that scene. ****ing Lionsgate.

So a battle tested marine and top FBI agent pulls skills out of nowhere? Then the movie starts he has been under cover for quite a while as a German, no mean feat and he is going into retirement so he has been at it for a while.

Im not saying he didnt have skills at all, but it seemed to me that he went from zero to Rambo in no time. Just because you're a War vet doesnt mean youre Rambo. It was hard for me to buy that he could go on a killing spree like at the end of 04. THe family massacre scene I could buy because it showed that he was having difficulty, while with the assault on Saint's building he seemed like an unstoppable killing machine with an unlimited arsenal, only leaving to leave walking fine with a scratch on his face and some slugs in his vest.

But Im ending the back and forward here, the point of my post at the top of the page isnt to discuss Pun04

The Gulf war wasn't a fraction as brutal as the Vietnam war, so Punisher being a Gulf veteran doesn't have nearly as much of an impact as being a Vietnam vet.

War is War...its brutal regardless...they were two different kinds of conflicts thats for sure...but they both had their own things that made them brutal.

Thats honestly extremely disrespectful to the people who fought in the Gulf War :/

Except there was an issue of Welcome back Frank where Frank was fighting an assassin who fought in the Gulf war and Frank said the Gulf didn't toughen up someone nearly as much as Vietnam and made short of him.

How is it disrespectful to say a war that lasted almost ten years and where 58000 US troops died is more brutal then a war that lasted less then a year and had about 240-392 US troops die in combat? That's not disrespect, its just common sense. Some wars are brutal then others, WWII was more brutal then the Spanish American war, for example.

I know Frank said that, im not arguing that, im just arguing that War is brutal and horrifying no matter what.

So a trained soldier and agent taking out a bunch of gangsters seems unbelievable to you? These guys who's training amounts to zero? Of course he took them out with little difficulty. And exactly how does he go from zero to Rambo? Are you assuming that when the movie starts he has no combat skills, training, years of experience working as a deep cover FBI agent, or would you rather ignore that? Not because they don't show someone learning how to tie their shoe lace doesn't mean it's astounding when they do it.

I said Im not going to continue the back and forward
Its a stupid discussion to have

Well, while you saw "zero to Rambo" I saw a gradual build-up to a climax that illustrates how deadly a man like Frank Castle can be when the situation escalates out of control. The whole movie he's working to set the Saints against themselves and then on the night when they finally collapse and turn on one another, he's there with a small arsenal to kick in the door and finish them off.

I liked that he took his time and made plans instead of just starting on the killing spree as soon as he got back to the States but I never got the feeling that he was a chump and I don't really think the movie supports that notion either.

I didnt say I wanted him to go on a immediate killing spree. Im not saying I dont want a gradual build up. And no I'm not saying I wanted an 80s training montage:whatever:

Im just saying there was no indication that Castle had those incredible skills early in the film and then in the climax that they seemed to come out at once. I just wouldve liked some indication of his skills whether that be a mention by a colleague or a scene set during his time in the military. Show his skills early was all I was saying, but it seems that some ignore that

I totally agree. What we saw was an incredibly intelligent operator who used battlefield psychology to turn his enemies on themselves and destroy themselves from within, even when they knew that the threat was from without. He found and exploited weaknesses in a really interesting way that reminded me of George Smiley from John LeCarre's novels, a person that can set his enemy down a road to destroy himself and just be there at the end for the final blow.

They all knew who the enemy was, but he turned their pettiness, jealousy, greed and inexperience to his advantage and they weakened themselves. Talk about punishment, having a man kill his wife, best friend, turn against everyone he trusts.

But some wanted an 80's type training montage I guess.

I'd like to see the Punisher used as a supporting character in a future Marvel Studios movie.. bring back Tom Jane in the role.. the rights have reverted back to Marvel by now.. no more LionsGate, Galeanne Hurd, etc.
