Gradual, but dude- did you check that fcking list? Lol. Once we hit mid June it's going to be Transformers in over drive- you can't possibly tell me any other summer movie wil have a merchandising campaign that big- can you?

I can, Harry Potter. The book (that comes out one week after the movie) already holds the record for highest number of preorders, beating it's previous releases.

MERCHANDISING CAMPAIGN. Lol.

So, Harry Potter is going to have LOTS of keychains, LOTS of books (of all types), LOTS of toys, LOTS of food promotion, LOTS of mechanical toys, LOTS of clothing apparrel?

That's merchandising- one book vs. that list is the under dog, lol. I'm talking about OVER POPULATING THE WORLD WITH MERCHANDISE. Not just aiming at a book store and calling it quits-

I'm betting you can enter a store and not find HP everywhere, whereas Transformers- you enter a super market, game store, video game store, hell- maybe throw in gas station... you'll see TRANSFORMERS.

Hell, they're making TRANSFORMER WASH CLOTHS!

I suspect Underdog will do pretty well come August...just a feeling.

Rush Hour will make its money and then some, people are drawn to that franchise.

Not everyone will rush out to see it. But, people will see it over time. It's not going to be an upfront film- I can tell you that straight off. Plus, Carrell is not present, thus expect it to similarly have to find it's audience back- which it will undoubtably do.

It's not 40 year old virgin 2. Thus, it will run the same but nobody sees it as 40 Year Old Virgin 2.

It won't have a huge opening weekend, but it'll have strong legs. Plus it'll bring in Grey's Anatomy fans (again one of the highest rated TV shows on right now) with Katherine Hiegel. The only thing that be a question mark is Seth Rogen as the co-star, but I'm sure audiences liked him in 40 Year Old Virgin.

Not huge opening, strong legs throughout summer = SLEEPER HIT.

A blockbuster hit is massively front loaded, with somewhat legs, but makes ALOT of $$$.

Yeah, but Heigl's never carried her own movie before. Hell, look at The Ringer, which she also co-starred in, and that didn't make too much. I could also mention Jennifer Aniston, who headlined a few moderately grossing Rom Com movies at the height of Friends' popularity.

C'mon you can't compare the Ringer, a very low brow dick and fart joke movie starring Johnny Knoxville to Knocked Up, sure the premise could lend itself to be a lot like the Ringer (and I'm sure there will be some dick and fart jokes), but you can tell it's gonna have that x-factor made 40 Year Old Virgin a hit. Plus all those Jennifer Aniston movies were totally generic cookie cutter romantic comedies that girls would have to drag their boyfriends too. Judd Apatow is able to make romantic comedies guys want to see, he's incredibly talented at making a movie with heart (for girls) that's also funny, but not totally corny and riddled with cliches (for guys).

i dunno, too many franchise movies crowding the playing field to really come up with the underdog winner

maybe... Nancy Drew? most people knows the character, evven in passing (girl detective), i'm putting the name out there mostly because its not as hyped as everything else.

I'm not talking about the actual movies themselves, just how Heigl's and Aniston's TV popularity didn't carry too much clout at the box office.

But I agree, Knocked Up definitely has the same potential as 40-Year Old Virgin did to gross a huge deal of money.

I would take Transformers off the list as it is this year's fourth of july blockbuster.

I would take Ocean's, FF, and Bourne off the list as they both have had very successful prequels.

Out of sleeper hits...hmm, Knocked Up. Its release date is in a bad spot...but it is really the only comedy that appeals to its demographic for awhile. Not to mention with the good word of mouth so far, it may have decent legs. Also The Simpsons does not seem to be on anyone's radar, but I can easily see it doing 200 + so...yeah.

Yeah, people are saying The Simpsons are several years too late, but everyone and their grandma will go to see this. College kids will go, parents will take their kids, kids will take their parents, senior citizens will go....it'll be PG-13, but everyone knows the Simpsons.

Exactly. The Simpsons is easily the biggest pop culture phenom of the past 20 years. That type of thing will have an audience, whether it was made during the 5th season or the 50th season. The fact that it doesn't appeal to the Family Guy generation who perfers fart jokes and popculture references to the intelligent humor the SImpsons still provides from time to time is irrelevant. They will still see it. The show still attracts 12-15 million viewers a week. They will see it. People who have never seen the show will see it. It will do great.

Uh, this poll doesn't really have that many "sleeper hits" on there.

The only ones that could be close to sleeper hits are Knocked Up and Surf's Up.

I'd add other movies like, Mr. Brooks, Rescue Dawn, Nancy Drew, Talk to Me, Hot Rod, Stardust..

I'ld say Hot Fuzz was the sleeper hit of the year

i don't know about a sleeper hit but i get the feeling the simpsons movie is being drastically underestimated

If there is a real sleeper hit this summer I have a feeling it will be a comedy. But not any of the movies on the list here. These movies are expected to make a lot of money.

Not sure if it qualifies as a sleeper hit, but I wouldn't be too surprised if "License to Wed" makes a fair amount of money.

I love "The Office" though, so maybe I am biased for John Krazinski [sp?]. heh.

Also, "Hairspray" too maybe.

Waitress looks like a sleeper hit in the making. It climbed to the number five spot on Friday while still in a limited release

By definition, the only legit choice has to be Knocked Up.

The rest are either major sequels or carry a great deal of pre-release hype based on their names alone. And Surf's Up has penguins, so that's like insta-money.

Even though i do think TF will do very well and Die Hard 4 will be a surprise success for me the ultimate sleeper will be Rise of the Silver Surfer,no one expects it to be anything but crap after the first with a similar if less BO run but i can see it cracking $200M with the release date it has.

Directed by the same director.

Starring the same cast.

We have no reason to think it'll be leagues better...

I'll wait for cable.

EXACTLY.

Not quite grasping what the term 'sleeper' means in relation to movies eh?
