Smoking bans: Good or Bad?

As Calvin pointed out, making these products illegal will probably make them more expensive to get and will likely spur greater numbers of robbing and muggings. Atleast we'd be able to take action against these individuals before they rob or mug anyone, simply for having or using the product.

But considering that most people aren't willing to mug for a 3 dollar pack, it's probably not a good idea to ban it and get that started. Besides, as long as there are isolated smoking sections and whatnot, there's no point in banning it unless you just want to exercise some totalitarian power. Might as well ban unhealthy food and have forced exercise.

I'm pretty sure just about everyone who smokes these days is well aware of that, and have already made peace with it.

They are thinking about pushing through a ban on Smoking here in Omaha and I'm all for it. They put one through a couple years ago in Lincoln and they've actually seen an increase in people and profits at local bars and resturants.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when I am eating and some jackass at the next table just lights up and blows all his smoke my way. Completely ruins my meal cause I have to taste his ****ing smoke. Disgusting and rude. We have a couple smoke free bars here already and they are always pack. Nothing better than not having to choke through clouds of smoke, stinging eyes, and smelling like an ashtray when I leave. I can't wait for the ban!

People are stupid animals. They can't be trusted with themselves.

Everyone knows cigarettes are harmful, but so many still continue to use them. That's stupidity right there. You can't allow people like that to make any personal decisions. They're too stupid.

Last I checked, apart from a sarcastically made, but very valid point about driving, I've not suggested anything should be be banned

People whom have no money and are inept at earning it, may try to take it from others. This is nothing new.

I agree. my point is all about a product filling the void that would be created by banning cigarettes.

To make it addictive, but claim that cos it isnt toxic its harmless is just silly. cos it will cause harm someone, by the nature of its addicition.Hope Ive made what im trying to say a little bit clearer

In which case, we might as well keep the status quo. yes, Cigarettes are harmful. buit no more harmful than anything else that had benzene added in quantity. but part of the excuse given for taxing cigarettes is the health risk. If we have a non toxic replacement thats mildly addictive, even if we ignore the assosciated harm (muggings ect), the economy suffers, or they tax it to the hilt again. and with out the "trying to get people to stop[" excuse, can they really tax it above normal VAT and sales tax?

I really can't stand the smell of smoke and people who smoke stink very badly and the sad thing is they do not realize it. A lot of people who smoke don't take into consideration the feelings of others who don't smoke, some people do but a lot don't. I don't think it should be illegal, but I don't mind the bans at all. I hate it when I go to a restaurant and ask for the non-smoking section and they put me at a table that is right next to the smoking section. I now ask to for the non-smoking section and I emphasize that I want to be as far away as possible from the smoking section.

Well I'm not a smoker and it really bothers me and I probably have more appreaciation for my lungs than anyone else on this site so I can have my opinion. Why should I have to put up with someone else's bad habit when I want to go out somewhere?

Not every place would to be a smoking place. Or, you could have isolated smoking sections. If there's an actual door separating them, it works.

I have no problem with isolated smoking sections but most place do not have an isolated smoking section and probably won't put up the money to do it unless they are building a new building.

If it was either that or ban smoking, I'm sure places would. Plus, you could have the business owners decide which kind of atmosphere and which clientelle they wanted, and could either opt for full on smoking, or no smoking at all.

As well, you could be killing off or denying the world the next Einstein or Ghandi. IIRC, none of Einstein's immediate relatives were all that smart, but look what came out of their brood.

No, it's not "just" legal suicide. It's also extremely pleasurable for the addict, just like all-you-can-eat buffets are for obese gluttons.
