It's definitely becoming a trend (I'm not sure if it's good or bad) that before any of the heroes can take up their full fledged mantle, they have to go through some physical ordeal.

Oliver had his 5 years of "Hell", Barry with his 9 Months in a Coma, Sara with the LOA, and Ray with being stuck in Atom Mode on his own for several months.

Oliver's "hell" is seeming less and less hellish with every season's flashbacks. I struggle to see how he became season 1 Oliver at this point.

There are some crappy moments, but I agree they seem to have too great a temptation to keep him human. He clearly has less a problem killing people than he used to, but he's still being a heroic person when he needs to be at the point where he's completely jaded.
