I'm thinking its most likely alien.... in its own weird way, the Ultimate-style genetic experiement thing actually seems more far-fetched, given the properties of the suit, not to mention that the trailer makes it relatively clear that the symbiote seems pretty damn alive.

really what I'm more concered about is how Venom will look in 3. I really think he should be massive, or at the very least a bit bigger then Spider-man.

Maybe he will link its properties to the creation of Sandman. I doubt it will prove to be alien, but whatever its origins, the story looks to be that it gets on him, it absorbs some of his powers, the sound of the bells allows him to get rid of it, but Brock sees it all and takes the suit which has absorbed Parker's powers and Spiderman's image.
