So I have this hypothesis...

Where do you stand?

  • Liked Superman Returns and Hulk

  • Hated 'em both

  • Liked SR, not Hulk

  • Liked Hulk, not SR

  • I haven't seen them. I'm ashamed to call myself a comics fan.

Exactly. Sure, it was Superman, but most of it seemed very day-to-day. There wasn't much fuss over Superman being back, it was more like "Hey Superman, what's up?" than "Superman! You're back! How was your trip?". The whole new Krypton thing was ridiculous, Luthor hasn't been that needlessly destructive since the 70's. The whole "love story" (if you could call it that) was really odd, and not in the "we love each other but can't be together" sense that was likely intended, it came off more like "yeah, we were a couple, and apparently we have a kid together, but we're really more like old friends who are slightly uncomfortable around each other".

That's just how I saw it.
This is why I have yet to see it. I just really didn't think they were going in a good direction & refused to spend money on it. I'm waiting for it to hit cable.

I liked 'em both . They're still hovering around the below average mark for me though.

As what you asked Chris about the Hulk , i can sorta give you an explanation.
If you you've got a two paintings , one modern abstract art and a beautiful painting of a landscape.
Both are essentially paintings but i bet a vast majority of people would instantly fall in love with the painting of the landscape and scratch their heads pondering what the abstract art painting stands for.

It's the same with Hulk and Batman Begins. While both movies try to flesh out the characters in the movie , Hulk just gives off that artsy vibe whereas Batman Begins is like the landscape painting : You understand what is presented , how it is presented and why it is presented in such a way.
With Hulk you're wondering what the heck all those molecules and other stuff is in the movie.
The fact also that Batman Begins has a tighter pace means that there is no lingering time.

In the end it all comes down to one thing : "Has the audience gotten their money's worth".
With Batman definately. With Hulk no. People want Hulk to do some serious carnage.
Everytime i show Batman Begins to friends and relatives they really do like the movie.
Personally, The more I watch, analyze and think about Batman Begins, the less I like it, which leads me to believe that it's not actually a very deep or introspective film. I like it more for the atmosphere it presents. Hulk I haven't watch or analyzed as much, on account of me being much more of a Batman fan than a Hulk fan, but every time I do watch it I like it as much or better than the time before.

I liked SR and thought Hulk was decent...you should have put that option in there. :csad:

I loved them both, as you can see in my sig, both are in my top 6 and SR may move higher once i get the DVD and watch it a few more times.

Both were terribly disappointing.

Singer and Ang Lee should read more comic books.
"More"? More than, what, NONE? Shouldn't it be "Singer and Ang Lee should read A comic book"?
And I don't know about that. Just as there are so many differing opinions on comics throughout these boards, being a comic reader doesn't necessarily make you a comic fan. And being a comic fan doesn't make you a comic expert-if there is such a thing. There are posters here-longtime comic fans-who will tell you that putting Spider-Man in the metallic red & gold costume & revealing his identity were the best moves Marvel ever made. There are some who wanna see the Jean Paul Vallet Batsuit again. There are those who say a Storm/Black Panther union is a slap in the face to the entire fan community. And while those opinions are in the minority (And certainly NOT shared by me!) they are out there. So my point is, two people can read the same story & come away with two totally different interpretations, especially in terms of what are the weak & strong points of the story. And if both of these people made movies based on said interpretations, who's to say which would be more faithful?

Liked Superman Returns and Hulk

Hulk being the better one. Though I hate the way they treated the oigin story/birth of Hulk. It's gotta be a gamma bomb no fcking gene-testing stuff. :cmad:

And in SR I didn't like the way the kid turned out...

Liked SR, didn't like Hulk. I'm also not a fan of the Hulk character in general, and i'm a huge Superman fan, so that has a lot to do with it.

I'm not a big Hulk fan and a huge Superman fan, and I liked them both, but yeah I can see how that kind of thing would matter.

Hmmm-I'm revisiting this thread because last time I posted on it, I hadn't seen "Superman Returns". Since then, I borrowed my uncle's DVD of it. He raved about it. Having seen it, I hated absolutely everything about it. I got zero entertainment out of watching this movie, & I still like "Hulk", although I am looking forward to the...I guess, reboot (?) of it.

Superman Returns was "ok", there were some really great moments in the movie though overall it was a HUGE let down. Though I do own it, why I don't know. Hulk in my opinion was just boring and completely done wrong.

Both films have some really good points, but are deeply flawed. The fact that Supes has a kid almost ruins the experience for me.

I liked both movies but my problem with Superman Returns like many others was the main bad guy and lack of action. I feel with Superman returns they should have kept in the movie that sub-plot of Lex being behind Superman going to Krypton but at the same time while he was gone have Lex reform and bring in Lexcorp and have the public love him. I also felt they could have explored more on Clark's feelings and doubts about the public wanting a Superman as they did in the script (which was all shot but just never made the final cut. Also everyone please read the shooting script for Superman Returns. Everything in that book was shot but never made the final cut. :cmad:) I also felt like the editing was done poorly and they cut out many things that should have stayed mainly the whole RTK scene and the Lex subplot and the Main title (where they had Newspapers through out bridging the gap between the first two movies to this one (seen if you have the 2 Disc copy.) Don't get me wrong I think it was a great movie but like someone else said it just seemed incomplete as well.

Hulk was awesome....SR SUCKED!!!

The silly stuff in Hulk seemed more like concessions to the fans from a director that didn't have experience in the genre, so I don't mind it much. But Superman Returns seemed more like a two-hour homage to Richard Donner, without any real attempt to re-invent the franchise or even take the old one in a significantly new direction. It was like watching a feature-length, big-budget fanfilm.

I still love both movies, both are in my top 5 CB movies, both are highly underrated, and both are superb IMO.

Disliked both. Hulk is better though because I don't like Hulk as much as Superman so the expectations were somewhat lower. Hulk was better because it's an interesting failed experiment. I've come to hate Superman Returns, it was just a darker version of another movie I didn't really care for (Superman: The Movie) with an ill concieved baby mama drama, longer running time and worse casting/acting. When Clark went to metropolis in the first movie I felt it tumbled down hill. The very first frame of SR was bad.

And my two cents on Batman Begins: It's a good movie. The first half was pretty great but it went down hill after that but it didn't take a Superman style swan dive, the second half was still pretty good. I just didn't like the poorly directed action, Katie Holmes, or the finally. I thought that the 3rd act was borderline bad, fun but not good. That needs not to happen in the sequel.

I'm fairly indifferent to both characters and movies. They are both just okay... so I guess I would say I like them both, as I don't hate them and I don't really prefer one over the other.
